A Very Lucky Praying Mantis

If we still had Doodles the cat, this praying mantis would have been a goner. Every time I squatted down to take a photo of an interesting insect, nosy Doodles the cat would come to look at what I found so interesting. Then he would step on it and walk away. He did that to many praying mantises, one grasshopper, one dragonfly, several butterflies and moths, and even a daddy long legs. I finally have a wonderful photo of a praying mantis, but still miss my inquisitive killer.

Doodles was just making sure you were a safe Mom! When Kobe steps on things, they really know they've been had! What a beautiful photo, a very nice one Dianne:)

Kobe could stomp on my food and I'd be in traction! Thanks! I was very pleased how well it came out.

@DianneN Did you realize, Kobe is right around 90 pounds now? Fading away to a shadow! (shadow of a dinosaur)

What a great shot! Oh sweet Doodles . . . this praying mantis has no idea how his life would be different if Doodles was in his ol' stomping grounds right now (literally stomping ).

Everything reminds me of Doodles. I miss him terribly. He developed lymphoma and the vet suggested he be put to sleep as soon as possible even though she never advocates it. We had a mobile vet come to our house 6 days later to put him out of his pain. My son held him, and I petted, kissed, and talked to him until he let out his last breath. He's buried in our garden next to his sister. I visit him every single day. He took my heart with him.

The cat just killed the insects? I thought you'd write that it killed them and then ate them.

That is a fantastic shot. I don't really want them here because they are dangerous to what few bees I get as well as to hummingbirds.

Kitty watched a squirrel bury a nut today. She was guarding my door, and did not move. When the squirrel scampered across the driveway, its work done, she still did not move her body. But I watched her head gradually inch to the left as she tracked the squirrel on its trek toward the bike path. I don't know what she does at night.

@DianneN I am a very accepting person. She looks so innocent but she might be a great hunter for all I know. The barn kitties brought me a baby bunny once (I fed them often and they were trying to do the same for me). I've probably posted about what I did with it. It's actually a story I tell to the kids to the preschool.
