Plaits

As a child did you ever wear your hair in plaits? (not talking to the fellas here ) Mine was nearly always in plaits. My mother did it for me when I was little but I was soon doing it myself. By the way, plaits are our term for braids. Judging from the photo I don't think I made too bad a job of it. I was 11 at that time.

Plaits like yours in the photo were called 'monkey swings' in German! :-) No idea why. I never wore my plaits like this but just had them hanging down. They became so long that when I was wearing a cardigan and had the plaits underneath, the ends were looking out from the lower rim. This looked rather funny. I learnt to plait my hair myself rather soon. I think I was 10 years old when the photo was taken.

I wore mine like yours sometimes too. I also sometimes wore them in a 'basket' - looping them to each other.

Our mother braided my hair sometimes when I was a kid. More often I'd have it in ponytails. Later we had our hair cut shorter and put curlers in. I was a kid in the 50s and 60s. So the time periods are going to make differences in people's responses.

I was a child in the 40s and I'm aware that plaits went out of fashion later on. I've seen a few children recently sporting some though. I wore my hair in a pony tail in my teens.

Plaits, is that the same as braids? I sometimes had my hair in braids, but I had such fine hair and not a lot of it, so braids looked too skinny. I think I had it more in two ponytails. Oh that face, Janet you are so pretty - then and now!!

Yes, plaits are braids. As you say, they could look too skinny if you had fine hair. (Thanks for being kind about my looks). I don't look very good now I'm afraid.

@jaboUK We called braids "pigtails" and the loose hair was pony tail for one or puppy dog ears for two, where I grew up. I got up to college though and everyone had different names. My doggy ears were pig tails, etc. Then of course there were versions of braids, like French Braids and corn rows that the black girls did in their hair.

@jaboUK I love it when the Mexican mommies here give their 1 3/4-year-olds their first "pony tail" (honoring me, I assume). They stick up straight in the air!

Great job and you were lovely. (Still are) My mother sat me on the high kitchen school to do my braids. (Plaits) She did very tight little braids back from from my temple then joined them into the long braids. I mean tight, my face was pulled back. It lasted a few days and thankfully got more comfortable. I remember trying and trying to learn to do my own. I finally got 2 evenish braids, then reached back to find a long section not included. I cut it off!

Is 'plaits' just an English term? You normally refer to them as braids? Your mother's treatment sounds really uncomfortable. How funny that you cut the unbraided bit off!

@jaboUK I never heard them called plaits growing up. In my area, at least, they were braids. I hated that kitchen stool

No, my hair was always too thick to hold any kind of braid or even a ponytail. Strange but true.

Yes I did. It was seen as kind of old-fashioned at that time but I liked that kind of thing. I used to tie ribbon bows at the ends.

I always wore them until after kindergarten. My grandmother did the best job. As a young mother, I wore French braids a lot. Such a pretty girl! You did a wonderful job.

@jaboUK The way we wore them went out of fashion, but they have been seen in variations in various hairstyles. My granddaughter wears them quite often hanging and looks so cute. I remember my grandmother made one long braid or plait before she went to bed each night.

@rebelann and @jaboUK my dad's mother kept her hair long and braided it every morning and wrapped it like a crown around her head for most of my memory. My mom's mom liked hers short and permed.

@jaboUK No, my mother used to cut it, and she kept it very short. It wasn't a huge shock when I woke up after having my brain tumor surgery, when they shaved me bald. They didn't actually have a big job to do.

You never had long hair? Funnily enough I can't remember my sisters having plaits - their hair had a natural curl so perhaps that was somedthing to do with it. My hair was completely straight.
