Are you proud of your birth name?

I saw this tv documentary about a guy being bullied in school because of his name. What’s his name you might ask? It’s Drink Water Rivera. I find it funny and cute. I’d never name my kids something like that though. I remember I joined a seminar before and the speaker said we should name our children something they can be proud of because they’d be bringing that name forever. Drink Water though isn’t thinking of changing his name legally. He’s keeping it so lol to the bashers. Photo is a sample birth certificate in my country.

You might laugh at this but this is true: I had a high school classmate whose name is Ali and his family name is Baba. In college, I also had a female classmate called Delilah and her family name was Samson.

@sol_cee Yes, that's true Madam :) There's another one as told by one of our tellers during month-end when they help in the preparation of monthly current account statements. It's in the dialect but somewhat X hahaha!

Not really that proud, I think it is too girly... Hihihi My first name was taken from my mother's best friend. I don't know if it's true that my father was courting her before my mother...

@brokenbee speaking of ninong/ninang, I think the first born child would have the parents’ bff or close friends as godparents. First child in the family calls for special people lol. The second child would have family members- brother or sister or cousin to be the godparents. Mom isn’t working. Dad has not enough bff. No other people to call for the second parent role lol. The third child would have the neighbors as their godparents. I think you know why?

In our country this name would have been refused, you cannot give funny or offensive names to a child. As people are brainless the authorities stepped in, a stupid name cannot be registered officially.

@sol_cee Correct, this could not be possible, but Regina (that means Queen in Italian) is a pretty common name, because Santa Regina exist, she was a virgin martyr.

My name is funny because my parents chose it not knowing if I was going to come out a boy or a girl so they picked a name that would work with both. And oddly enough, I am extremely tomboy for a girl so I think I lived up to the name they gave me, lol.

That is indeed a weird name to carry. i just do not understand why his parents thought of that name for their son. I just feel sad that some parents do not think responsibly in naming their children.

@sol_cee Sadly that is happening like they are naming a pet but they do not realize the consequences that it may carry when they grow up.

And we are not so strict with names here compared to other countries where government authorities have a say on what names parents give their child.

@rsa101 naming a pet dog was a no brainer for us (I and my siblings) before. If it’s black, it’s Blackie. If it’s brown, it’s Brownie.

It doesn't really bother me but when I was small I thought it's too girly compared to other kids in school. I'm glad he's keeping it, if he changes his name, the bullies will find something else to bully about anyway.

@sol_cee I agree with you. I'd never want to name my child / children names where I think they may be bullied for it. I do wonder why the name "Drink Water" was chosen for this dude. I am glad he isn't changing his name because no bully should become powerful enough to make us change things about us that is part of who we are.

I'm happy with my given name. I was named after my mother's father, my grandfather, who I really liked a lot. I think giving a kid a too colorful name or one that could be made fun of is not the best of ideas.
