What ever happened to ''ice milk''...is it still out there?

All of this hot weather and waiting on my central air to be repaired has me dreaming of cold things to eat. I sure don't want to cook and make my house even hotter. If you know me, you know what a sacrifice that really is, as I dearly love to cook. I'm no soda drinker, usually only make an exception to that if I've been sick and drink some Sprite or 7-UP. My son brought over diet root beer the other day for me. Not sure why, he just thought it sounded good. I put it in the refrigerator, and last night decided to try some. One thing leads to another, then I of course wanted vanilla ice cream to make a root beer float. But I really didn't want that...I thought of the old standard ''diet''ice cream we used to buy sometimes, that I simply did not like, called ice milk. It came in cartons just like ice cream. Then I realized I never see it in the stores, and can't remember when I did see it, but it's been years now. So, then of course I had to look it up. I discovered that Dairy Queen ice cream is not really ice cream, which I had never considered. I know McDonald's isn't, but I don't hardly ever go to a fast food place, never for food and usually only for coffee on a trip. Son wanted to go get vanilla ice cream, but he did settle for frozen vanilla yogurt instead. He said it wouldn't make a good root beer float, but it did. Not as sweet but it had been so many years since I even tasted one, it was a good little treat to try to cool down last night. He polished off the rest of the frozen yogurt, so I don't have to worry about indulging in more, there's a bit of the diet root beer left but he will finish that, I'm sure. Ah, food memories. Come to think of it, as kids we diid that with grape Fanta, or strawberry Fanta, too. Soda and ice cream--no wonder we had all of that energy!

Watermelon is good for cooling off as well as iced tea. We should stay hydrated in hot weather.

That is so funny that you posed this important question, because just the other day I was thinking the same thing! What happened to ice milk? When I was in high school many moons ago, I worked in a grocery store and I remember stocking ice milk in the ice cream section.

@marlina In my opinion, it's only saving grace was it's temperature. It truly was terrible.

From what I read, it faded away due to not being very tasty or popular. Then frozen yogurt arrived, and it was pretty much doomed.

You know that's a good question. I don't think I have seen ice milk for years. I think it has kind of been replaced by frozen yogurt.

At least frozen yogurt has flavor. That ice milk stuff was like eating ice cubes, no taste at all.

Ice milk - not sure exactly what that is. But I thought of my husband's family . . . they drank milk with ice cubes (not my thang). I remember checkered ice cream from my childhood . . . a checkered block of vanilla and chocolate ice cream that you slice and serve . . . ahhh, deliciousness from the past never to be seen again!

I remember checkered ice cream, I had forgotten about it. Also, Dad and Grandpa loved Neapolitan ice cream. I still like that, but haven't purchased any for a very long time.

@marlina I know people that drink it that way, I personally am not a milk drinker.

I made some gazpacho last night. It's refreshing to eat something cold on a hot night. I'd stay away from too much ice cream and soda, though. I haven't seen ice milk for ages either. My mother used to get that sometimes.

@MarieCoyle We had watermelon for dessert tonight, too. We ate it on a beach.

I had a cold dinner, made a chicken salad. After all of that time of being hot, I wanted something cold to eat. Watermelon for dessert, so good.

@Sheilamarie78 I must admit to being jealous about the beach. I love the beach, never get tired of it.

@MarieCoyle It sounds so familiar, maybe it wasn't in my region because I'm not young, or maybe my mom just never bought it.

You must be a young, young person...I know it was a thing for years. But you haven't missed a thing! The only thing good about it was that it was cold!

Maybe that's why they don't make it much anymore, no one misses it! I certainly didn't.

I don't think I've even bought any at the store for at least 20 years or more, I thought it tasted terrible. So I never looked for it.

I chilled a watermelon, we had some cubes of it, some frozen grapes (that I like) and a vanilla ice cream while watching TV. No sodas here, we both do not like.

I find vanilla yogurt to be plenty sweet. Not sure about the frozen stuff. I hope you can cool off soon.
