Do You Find Praise Or Criticism To Be More Motivating?

Before the Pandemic, I used to join a group of amateur singers singing in free concerts organized by the local community. We sometimes went to the elderly homes and sang some oldies for the seniors to enjoy. After the performance, I always asked for feedback from my close friends because I trusted that they would give me their honest opinion. Praise or positive feedback surely made me happy and motivated me to continue doing what I've been doing well. On the other hand, their criticism could be even more motivating. They criticized me because they genuinely wanted me to be better. I would evaluate my performance and think of ways to improve. When I received criticisms from people other than my friends, I would listen and reflect to see if there was some truth to it. Do you find praise or criticism to be more motivating?

I totally dislike when people (who usually know nothing) criticize. A constructive criticism is always welcome, as well as to receive a compliment for what we did.

@Beestring Exactly, I cannot stand those who criticize but give no input how to do better.

I don't think you need to feel sorry for criticizing if you are sincere to offer feedback to help the person improve.

It depends on 'what I'm trying to do.' I try to 'comprehend' the feedback (positive or negative) as "advice on how to accomplish my goal better."

Yes, that's what I try to do, taking negative or positive feedback as advice on how to improve the work I'm doing.

I don't think that there is a general answer. It's not the same if people criticize your singing or, say, your cooking skills.

Criticism when done to improve you is welcomed but not when to put you down.

Most of the time the criticism is more motivating than praise. Praise can be our reward on what we do. According to you, it is even motivating! I think because if we are criticized, we know that we still can improve on something, our skills. That is good for you to do that as your motivation.

Wow you're a singer. Criticisms are good, constructive for improvement. Others praise but deep inside a lie.

Praise can be deceiving and superficial while criticism makes us improve but can hurt too. I welcome positive criticism more than superficial praise.

Both would be equally motivating.to me. If l am praised that would be encouragement to work even harder. If l am criticized l would be energized to prove them wrong.
