Did we go over the top?

Every Christmas we agree we are not going to spend too much on presents, and then as it gets nearer we worry that we haven’t got enough things for the girls to open on Christmas day. This year was no different. My partner and I each keep a lookout for suitable gifts throughout the preceding few weeks (or even further ahead, if we happen to see something suitable or that we know the girls want). So we never really know what we have for them until we get together a week or so ahead and compare notes. And then of course there are always a few last-minute bargains. This year they each got sets of books that they wanted, they each got a pair of boots, they each got clothes, there were various other smaller gifts and then Little One got a whole lot of Sylvanian Families toys while Big One got the promise of money towards the iPad that she wants to use for her art. And all of us got a beginners’ course in archery (to be taken in January). Suddenly, from worrying that we didn’t have enough gifts, I was worrying that we had gone over the top! They seemed to have a pile of presents! In justification, the clothes and shoes I would have bought for them anyway, and were not so expensive as many of them were not brand-new or full-price items; all except one I bought in a sale or through eBay or in a charity shop. The toys also were from eBay, the largest Sylvanian Families item would have cost over £140 new but I paid £15 for it, it was such a bargain that I couldn’t resist! But I guess I don’t know how to value these sort of things when deciding how much to spend – would you take into account the ‘new’ cost of an item, or the amount you actually paid? The amount that was actually paid. When Pretty was 7 years old, her mom and I were getting divorced. I told Pretty I could only afford $80 to buy Christmas gifts. I asked if she wanted stuff under the tree on Christmas morning or if she wanted to get one gift on Christmas morning and then go shopping the day after Christmas when everything would be cheaper. She chose to wait for the day after Christmas... We did that from then on, even after I had more money we could have used for her Christmas gifts.

@Fleura She also liked being able to pick out what gifts she received. I always had one thing waiting for her Christmas morning and then she loved doing the rest of the Christmas shopping the day after.

@DaddyEvil She sounds rather like Little One, she always says she doesn't like surprises (although she usually still manages to look pleased when she gets some!)

I love the older one is getting money toward the iPad for drawing! Wow that is a huge bargain what you got those Sylvanian Families for. I’ve never heard of them. When I plan for Christmas I have a budget and spend a certain amount on each person. If I get something on clearance I go by the actual price I paid not what it originally would have cost. I keep a list on my phone of all that I bought and how much I paid and who all I have left to buy for.

That's a good idea, I should probably do that. If I go back now and try to add everything up I'm sure it will be more than I intended - although the clothes and shoes do fall into the grey area of 'Well I would have bought those anyway, just not all at once'! Yes Big One is obsessed with art. I don't know what she will do as a career but maybe she'll find something if she is determined enough.

I think Sylvanian Families toys might also be called Calico Critters in the US. Basically they are very cute little toy animal families and all the houses etc that go with them, but boy are they expensive!

I'm not in charge of decorating! And that tree was bought from Woolworths in 1974 so give it a break!

Sixteen and ten. Lots of fantasy/ re-imagined historic stories or re-interpreted myths ... and I'm not sure hw to describe the others. Titles like 'Peanut Jones' and the accident-prone 'Model Girl' and books by David Baddiel, among others.

I should head straight to your place, I don't mind open any leftover . (I stop buying Christmas gifts, just give the old kids here money. They prefer that way.)

It's hard to stop sometimes on the Christmas buying. The retailers love it, I am sure.

That's the fun with Christmas and kids . . . you bring the excitement too them and they absolutely enjoy it all! I think you did well to get them stuff they wanted, and stuff they could use . . . and hey, getting whatever you can for a bargain helps Santa's wallet .

While it's great for kids to have something to open on Christmas Morning, try not to stress over it. You got your kids things they could want, as well as things they would later need. That's what's most important.

I think you did well. Like you, some stuff we would have bought for our kids anyway, such as clothing, but it makes another 'gift' for them to unwrap. I used to pick things up through the year too.
