The Beast is Near

I’m not talking about the beautiful spring weather that’s on the way to North America. I’m talking about the bear that ate all the bird food at our house up north. My friend, who lives only one house away from me through the woods, but a 2 minute drive by car, sent me this photo. She snapped it roaming on her neighbor’s deck. Black bears don’t usually attack people unless threatened or are protecting their young. Their sense of smell is 75 times greater than ours. Perhaps it smells breakfast cooking and is just hungry. Well, there’s nothing cooking at our house up north, and the bird feeders are in the garage waiting our return. By then, food should be plentiful in the woods for all the bears that live there. Have a wonderful new month of March! Heading out for my morning walk and going food shopping later with hubs. See you later.

My in-laws live in the mountains of western NC and see bears often.

To misquote Bullwinkle, "Are they friendly bears?"

I'm glad you're in Florida right now. I'd worry about you if you were back in Connecticut... Have a good walk and enjoy shopping with your hubby. Talk with you later.

Thank you. I’m more worried about coming across one in my yard when I get home. I know I would freak out and not be able to plant my garden. My day has been a very long one. I sat down to myLot, finally, and saw my brother on the beach. Ran down to talk, but couldn’t get back into the building. Something is wrong with the lock. I used the intercom outside to call hubs, but the door couldn’t be buzzed open. Thank goodness some lady was on her way out and held the door open for us. Hubs was at the elevator on his way down after listening me freaking out. No one’s key worked. Time to move

@DianneN You're welcome. Oh, wow! I would have been calling everybody in the building to let me in. I hope someone fixed the lock by now.

@DianneN Actually, a well-trained black bear could help you. They like to dig for grubs and other tasty things.

Have a great walk and food shopping. That is a bit too close for comfort. Seeing one up on my porch or deck would freak me out. I did see a video on FB though of bears that would come right up on the porch when the guy was sitting there. He was not afraid of them or they of him. They aren't pets though. I wouldn't encourage that kind of behavior..sooner or later they will go up on the wrong porch and get a belly full of lead..

@DianneN You are right to be concerned. I read about one breaking into a house trying to find something to eat The lady threw a pack of bologna at it and slammed the door

It was a long day….. They scare me no matter what people say about them. I am hoping it’s long gone by the time I get back home. If not, it would certainly put a damper on my summer.

What a beautiful bear but he needs to stay in the forest away from houses. I hope he does not get killed.

This is a big boy, but seems peaceful. They go around searching for food. I hope that there are no neighbors attracting bears with apples or other fruits left outside.

@DianneN - No matter how friendly wild animals are, I do not like to see them too close to me. Even cows can become aggressive.

No. Black bears are not dangerous unless you get between a mommy and her baby.

It seems that the place you live is 'frequented' by bears.Did you run across a bear when you went for morning walk ?
