I think my neighbor lady is crazy!

She always goes to Starbuck's every morning to meet her friends. She goes again in the late afternoon, too. I was sitting outside on the patio earlier and she walked over to chat for a minute. She said one of her friends doesn't want to meet anymore, as she feels the money every day is just too much. So, my friend tracked her own Starbuck's purchases for one month (31 days) and she spent over...unbelievably $300!! To go out for coffee!! I was just shocked that anyone would do that, but I know they do. I make my own coffee. Yes, I do go to Starbuck's once in a great while--because my daughter sends me giftcards, knowing that I enjoy that sometimes. I know I would not pay their prices regularly to go there. $300X 12 months per year=$3600.00 for COFFEE. Don't get me wrong, I love coffee! But that is just a ton of money per year to go out for coffee. Oh, neighbor says she is going to try to ''cut back a little''...time will tell.

Some people are just weird. I guess, if they have the money to spare, more power to them. When I was working all the time, I'd put the change I had left over at the end of a day into a container and put that money into a Starbucks card for Pretty. She got about $50 every six months to spend in Starbucks. She was happy with that.

I don't think she has much money. She drives a car that's very unreliable. She always complains about the price of groceries and how she cannot afford this or that. But she is hell bent on having that coffee!

@MarieCoyle It's still her choice on how she spends her money.

@DaddyEvil Yes, it certainly is her choice. I do have a hard time when she complains about every single expenditure except her Starbuck's run, however. No, I would never say anything to her, but that still doesn't get me past the shock factor when she told me how much she spend there in one single month!

Oh I believe it . . . my friend was just like that! She was a workaholic . . . she literally went to Starbucks for breakfast, lunch and dinner - not kidding. She didn't cook at all (we laughed she had a coffee maker but never used it). But, she made good money . . . so what can anyone say. However, after she found the love of her life, she had to cut back . . . now they only go on weekends - that was a huge step for her .

@MarieCoyle I only go when she and I meet for coffee . . . and even then I'll order a small green tea . Funny thing is I have gift cards too . . . from her . . . because Starbucks is where she drinks, eats, and shops .

@much2say Honestly, I can't justify the excessive cost of it when I can make really good coffee at home, the only way I go is to use a gift card, too.

There is no way I would spend that much of getting coffee or any other drink from a fast food place.

I do not even spend $ 300 a month for our full grocery shopping. Some people really waste money. She could buy a good coffee machine (she can buy one for about $ 150) and enjoy a much better coffee at home.

@MarieCoyle There is a very nice restaurant not far from us. Every three months they organize a "Murder Mystery Dinner" with a themed menu, always very good. The price has doubled after Covid. We went once with our niece and her boyfriend and they invited us for my husband's birthday, before Covid. We do not go anymore.

Anna, I don't spend that much either. A person can really blow the budget by going out all the time.

@LadyDuck It certainly is a higher cost, Anna. My kids took me out to a wonderful restaurant for my birthday, they specialize in steak and seafoods. It honestly has doubled it's prices since the pandemic. It was delicious and I enjoyed it a lot, but oh, the price!!

I had a Starbucks addiction like that in the past. I would stop there every morning on my way to work and get coffee, and then every afternoon I would stop at another Starbucks when I'd pick my kids up from school. I realized how much I was spending there and forced myself to cut back. For a while I'd just go there once a week, usually to treat myself on a Friday, but over the last year or so I haven't really gone there much at all. We got a new Keurig coffee machine in my office at work, so now I either make my coffee at home or first thing when I get to work.

Yes, but you realized you should not go all the time and you did something about it. This lady won't change, like I said, her grown children say jokingly that she will probably spend her dying moments in a Starbuck's. That's a good thing what you did!

I try very hard to steer clear of the baked goodies when I do get to Starbuck's...they made the mistake of posting the calorie count on the item description label in the case...argh!

Sometimes we can "know" what something costs, but it is still hard to internalize the actual expense. My friend and I often meet for "coffee" or a bite, but because the weather is nice we each brought what we wanted from home and sat in the park Much cheaper.

I've done that, or meet a friend and we sit on her patio and spend time together, or at my own home. It's just as nice or nicer in my opinion. Plus, refills are free!

Indeed, Starbucks could bore a hole in one's pocket. I went there last week to eat my favorite cinnamon rolls and I spent more or less P500 pesos. It's so expensive like I have eaten a full meal. So, I avoid going there for now.

@MarieCoyle Yes, I thought of that too, perhaps I would request my DIL to cook them. Thanks for the info.

The solution to that might be to just make some cinnamon rolls...not hard, it makes your house smell delightful, and a lot cheaper. Yes, I know it's not the same as going out.

@wolfgirl569 In all honesty, she loves to whine...and gossip...and here I am talking about her, but I have never talked about her anywhere in my life before, only here, honest! haha...she is sort of like that Gladys Kravitz on Bewitched, peeking out her window and always spying on people.

@MarieCoyle Years ago, we paid off a bill, but instead of adding that into our income, we had it automatically put into a savings account before we got used to having it. We never missed it and it added up nicely.

@MarieCoyle I'm sure you could. I don't know what a can of coffee costs today, but back when I was married, I think a can of coffee cost about the same as a cup of Starbucks today.

Sometimes people get into some habit and don't realise that how much it's costing them..Weird but true! Good that at least your neighbour has realised it and she plans to cut down on that. Let's see how much she will be able to.

That is alot to spend at Sbucks, but for some people I think it is kind of like a religion. I have an Sbucks giftcard now, and that is the only reason I will go there now really...unless I was just getting a plain coffee. Those don't cost that much I think, or if I had a real yen for a frappucino I might go, or a speciality flavor might entice me in

We have numerous Starbuck's here, it's a college town and that adds to the traffic. Ours do offer a free refill on just plain black coffee, which is what I generally get.
