Mama Said

I was just remembering something my mom always said when she was telling us what to do. She said, "If you find it open, make sure it's open before you leave. If it is closed keep it closed, if it is hungry, feed it, if it is crying, love it. I think that was pretty good advice for life. What do you think? What did your mama always say, about anything?

Mom always told us to be careful and she'd be waiting when we got back.

Pop always said , candy's bad for your teeth. And kept a big jar of candy on the table. This was like talking to a brick wall, because five of my molars are gone.

But you have sweet memories of eating all that candy though, right? That is funny that your dad knew about the dental problems too much candy can cause but he put it out there so anyone could eat it.

Yes, wise words..One thing my mom always said was if someone gave us a gift of clothing or jewelry to make sure we wore it the next time we saw them so they could see we appreciated it.

People always like to know that you appreciate the gifts that they gave you and that you will wear/use them a lot.

Mom always told us never to brag, but be nice with those who had less than we had.

@akalinus - I also judge people looking at how they treat workers. Some are so rude, even with the employees in the grocery stores.

@LadyDuck I cleaned a church for years. Some people there acted like I was trash. I also worked in a nursing home for a while. I was appalled by the way some people treated the patients.

That is how I judge people's character. How do they treat the waiters in the restaurant? How do they talk to the janitor and other helping people they meet on the way? What about the welfare mothers and the elderly or handicapped who are out and about?

Whenever I left the house, Mum would always call after me 'Have you got a hankie?'

That is cute. I have not seen a hankie in years though I believe I had some as a kid. I completely forgot about that until I saw this post.

@akalinus I still use them. Tissues wouldn't last long with me.

My mom always wanted us to cook and do household work perfectly. She also wanted us to adjust with every situation which I don't agree to.

Sometimes, you do have to adjust to certain situations. You might not be able to change something but you could try to make the best of it. I think housework does not need to be perfect because it is always there. As long as things are decent, I don't worry much. But that is me.

@akalinus Growing up with my mom I too some what became a perfectionist where managing a house is concerned but I don't agree adjusting with trouble mongers whether in the family or in the society.

Makes total sense . My mom always said "Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be . . . " - as in that Doris Day song.

@akalinus I guess I get too serious. I want to believe that it is what it is . . . but I can't let things go so easily like that. But that's me.

I remember my mom singing that. It was made famous by Doris Day, I believe. "Que sera, sera."

That is good advice. Mine said I would understand when I had kids. Funny thing, I didn't understand.

I don't know if you have kids, but do you understand now? Kids think they know everything and find out later that they don't know anything.

@akalinus Yes, I have kids. My mother never explained anything except to use that phrase constantly. I kept waiting for the lightbulb to go on when I had my kids.

Your Mom gave you good advise. My mother wasn't around too much to say anything of real value to me. But her life taught me how I didn't want to live mine. So that was her greatest lesson she could have taught me.

I'm sorry it was that way. I'm sure she could not help being the way she was. You know how you want to live and that is a big lesson in itself.

That is definitely good advice. My husband never closes doors and drawers the way he found them. My mother never gave me any advice. Hope you have a good day.

I know people who leave drawers and doors open and it drives me crazy that they can't take an extra second and close things.
