Zumba!

Oh a whim this morning, my daughter and I took a free exercise class offered by a local public library. We did ZUMBA ! Zumba is a dance type workout inspired by Latin dances and rhythms. The instructor asked if we've done Zumba before. Well, I come from figure skating and dance . . . my daughter has taken Salsa. We weren't exactly newbies, but we've never officially taken Zumba. Could we keep up? We did keep up! The 45 minute workout was invigorating and just enough to get our dance energy going. I'm no spring chicken, but hey, I STILL GOT IT . I have to be careful of my wonky left knee though . For now, we may do this on Saturday mornings for the next few months. It's free, so why not. It's something healthy and "new" to do anyway. Have you thought about doing or done anything new lately ?

I would not be able to keep up I don’t think. Sounds like you guys did awesome. I’ve never tried Zumba but I have tried other things for exercise that was to music and I couldn’t coordinate the moves and got frustrating.

It did help that my daughter and I had previous experience with Latin dances. There were a couple ladies there that were sort of at a stand still just trying to figure out the steps.

Be careful with your knee, my cousin loved so much Zumba and a few months later she needed knee surgery. I walk and that is my exercise, I am not young and I know what it's better to avoid.

@LadyDuck I'm sorry your cousin's knee did not get much better. My dentist said in her case that they could "clean up" the inside of her knee, but can't do much more for actually fixing of it. Although since then the technique for knee surgery has been improved, she is debating whether to do her other knee or not. Oh yes, I remember your stairs! Is your weather good now so you can walk outdoors?

Oh no - how is your cousin's knee now? I know knee surgery can be good or bad. My dentist is still limping around and her surgery was done years ago . Walking is always good - we still do that too. I do think staying active however we can keeps us fairly young.

@much2say - My cousin's knee is no more as it was before surgery, she still limps around and she has pain if she walks for too long. I like to walk and I do every day during the nice season. With a house on three levels I go up and down the stairs dozens of times every day.

I went to 'Zumba for Seniors' last Monday and enjoyed it. I suspect it's more exercise to music but it was still good. I did have to stop halfway as I was getting giddy - not sure why. I'm glad you had fun.

Ohhhh ! Right - the exercise is like aerobics (not my thing) but using Latin dance steps (which is more my thing) and music. It can be high energy - so many people stopped in the middle for water breaks!

@much2say As we're all pretty old here, most classes are geared to seniors. I used to love boot-scooting in our previous town.

That is wonderful! I always thought it looked fun, but my body isn’t up to that. And how great that they care enough about the community for it to be free! How many people showed up?

Our public libraries have many free public events, but it's hit or miss (some good, some meh - and these types are probably to promote certain businesses/studios). There were about 8 people including us. I have a feeling it will be the same workout each and every time - but this we'll be ok with that.

I did the free youga at the librry last year, but it was the chair yoga and not much of a work out. I don't think I cold handle zumba though.

Ohhh, my mom and I did the chair yoga last year. The instruction was on a screen - it wasn't particularly exciting nor much of a workout like you said. This zumba class wasn't too rigorous to be honest, but yah, I've seen some real intense zumba workouts in gyms/studios.

Honestly, I have felt more energetic and alive lately because of tai chi and learning about exercising the acupressure points. The dance part comes naturally to me - I could follow the steps easily. Somehow I had stamina to keep up the entire time without having to be out of breath - it felt great !

@changjiangzhibin89 I just wish I could do something more to fix my knee. I still have not found the right formula for helping my knee - I hope surgery is not in my future. Otherwise, I have quite diligent about a daily routine with tai chi and acupressure points.

It's aerobics but with a Latin flair - feels like dancing more than exercise. Aerobics with 5 cups of coffee .

@LindaOHio Oh my - 11 hours is a lot of time to be in a wheelchair. The instructor actually told us to get knee protection - that exercising on carpet is not a good thing - so I really have to watch it. Wishing you a good week too .

@thelme55 Oh how fun you are in a group ! I know, as adults it's not always easy to schedule these times to get together - but it's good you have this group to exercise with. Nice - sounds like Zumba is quite popular in the Phils! We took the class for the 3rd time now, more people seem to be coming!

@much2say Yes, there are. Thanks to you tube. I also have a Zumba group of 4 persons but we can only do it when all have time as 2 of them are working in the home for the aged and doing shift schedule. There are some parks in the Philippines where there is Zumba activities and everyone can join. I find it great. More people, more fun.

I like Zunma but I am a klutz so can't usually keep up with everyone because I don't pick up dance steps very easily. I like to dance to Latin music at home though. I love Gloria Estefan's music and ance to that to lose weight and stay in shape.

Gloria Estefan - yes! I love her!! Did you know that her daughter also sings? What's important is we just keep moving . . . and with good music we can dance our way and it's all good .
