Last March I wrote a discussion about a little history I stumbled over regarding the house that Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of the 16th president, lived in. Since that discovery I’ve been yearning to visit the Mary Todd Lincoln House in Lexington (about 80 miles away from me). Waddaya know, I finally made it!!!! I had a hot date with my niece for lunch, so while I was in Lexington — and the Mary Todd Lincoln House was reopening for the season (it’s closed in the winter because of lack of tourists in the area) — it was time to keep another hot date…this one with history! The house that the Todd family owned was built in the early 1800s. It was owned by a man whose business failed, so patriarch Robert Todd bought it for about $1,500 in 1832. Mary moved to Springfield, Illinois, where she’d marry the future president, in 1839. While there are endless tributes to the Todd family, Lincoln’s presidency, and his wife (by the way, this was the first museum established for a former First Lady in the U.S.), there is no mention of what I discovered and wrote about last year: after the Todds sold the property it became a brothel. Yes, Texas isn’t the only place that has a wh*reshouse in it. Anyway, the story of the Todd family, including their slave ownership (they were “kindly” slave owners, having more “servants” than “slaves” by all accounts, not “beat them with a whip” owners), Mary’s life before, with, and after Lincoln (sad fact: Abe and Mary were holding hands when Abe was assassinated), and the controversy surrounding her being considered “insane” are told within the walls of the house. It’s furnished mainly with period furnishings, although some of the furniture did belong to the Todd family. The cashier/historian advised us all to rub the banister, because Abraham Lincoln had used it when he and Mary stayed there! It’s a lovely house with a rich history of Kentucky and the United States. I’m so glad I finally got to see it! We love visiting our local historical houses - how cool you got to visit one tied to Abraham Lincoln! This looks like it has been kept up well (her family was wealthy, right?). A house out here was built around 1886 as part of Lincoln's Homestead Act - not as spacious nor fancy though same tub . Interesting your hot finding wasn't mentioned, but I suppose they have to keep the reputation clean . Oh the stories the walls could tell !

@FourWalls Ah, so it was refurbished . . . but yah, still it's amazing that it is the original house - to think it was almost demolished entirely! We knew of Abe's log cabin but didn't realize it was not the original. Glad to hear it when historical places are saved . . . sad that folks don't care to preserve history so much these days.

@FourWalls I do remember reading somewhere that there is a lot of demolition going on in Nashville. I don't know a lot about country music but I do associate Nashville to be the heart and soul of country music . . . clearing out those pieces of history is such a shame .

@much2say — I know. I hate even driving through Nashville anymore because all you see are construction cranes, and it’s coming at the expense of the history of country music. The ONLY place still standing where Hank Williams recorded is in Cincinnati!

It was amazing. Don’t think I’d want to try that bath tub, though.

@LindaOHio — no, it’s an early model sitz bath. Of course, they may have used it as a tub for the children!

@FourWalls Maybe it's one of those that you stand in; and they pour water over you.

That’s a good refurbishing. They almost tore it down, but our First Lady (Governor Louie Nunn’s wife) stepped in and saved it in the late 60s.

It was very roomy; however, I’ll stick with my walk-in tub (versus that thing, which is more of a “fall-in and good luck getting back out!” tub ).

We have some really cool houses around here. Federal Hill, in Bardstown, is the song that inspired Stephen Foster to write “My Old Kentucky Home.”

I will have to remember that if I ever happen to get to Lexington again. We drove through there once on the way to Fla. from PA.

Lexington’s a beautiful area, and that drive down I-75 from about Richmond down to the state line is amazing. Especially in autumn.

That's a very interesting piece of history you got to experience visiting the Mary Todd Lincoln House. Getting to walk through the home she grew up in and even touch objects used by Abraham Lincoln himself must have made it feel so real and personal. Glad you could combine the museum visit with quality time with your niece too.

This house looks so pretty. Interesting story about this house that became a brothel, I have seen ancient brothels in Nevada, Texas is not the only place.

I went down that rabbit hole, which is how I discovered the Todd House had become a brothel later in its history. Famous brothels everywhere!!

@LadyDuck — I discovered that “saloon & hotel” operated by a woman (like “Miss Kitty” on Gunsmoke) was “code” for brothel. Silly me, I thought it really was a saloon and a hotel!

@FourWalls During the gold rush there were brothels everywhere in the west.
