Well that was a little scary

I just clicked a headline on FB and it was some scam site that said my puter was infected with a virus, and they wanted me to call a certain number to remove it. It was designed to make you pay money to get it disinfected or something. A simple restart took care of the problem. Be aware, if you do use FB even sporadically, you could get something like this. Be wary of clickbait ads.

I wonder how many people fall for that.

Who knows? Maybe some. I would think most would do a restart though. I hear people being interviewed on TV that fall for phone scams..and alot of them seem quite intelligent. I guess whomever they were talking to was pretty darn convincing. I will rarely even answer the phone on an unsolicted call. Too much monkey business going on out there.

So. Freaking. Many. I've seen at least a dozen of them in the last couple of weeks. Sometimes people bring them in for virus scans as a precaution, but soooo many people who come in have called the number and installed the remote access software they push, and then slowed down to think about what's happening once the scammer started rummaging through their files.

@yukimori I saw somebody on TV once who says it is better to assume everyone online means to do you harm than to trust and be scammed, so I am always skeptical.

some links may also be distributed in search engines, apparently not only on Facebook, that's why I avoid all links that appear in searches.

Unless you know the source, better to be careful.
