Do you have a phobia? If so what is it and does it effect your daily living? What is a phobia? A phobias a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities, or persons. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject I suffer from Agoraphobia which is the fear of open spaces or of being in crowded, public places like markets. Fear of leaving a safe place. Fear of crowds. Mine is actually the parts of being in crowded public places and the fear of crowds. I'm not worried about open spaces. This often effects my life and makes going places difficult. I often avoid such places as malls, doctor's offices, stores and it even effects me at times when I'm driving. When the roads are too crowded I try to find alternate routes due to this fear. It makes it very difficult to work and sometimes to even leave the house. For a list of phobias and what they mean you can check out this link: http://www.phobia-fear-release.com/phobia-list.html

I have ocd so have quite a few phobias including shaking peoples hands, but I force myself to do it as I dislike hurting peoples feelings. I hate germs and dirt and have to wash my hands with liquid soap when I go to a toilet outside the home. I hate it when they have bar soap that looks like it has been well used it doesn't clean you properly. I also hate using outside the home toilets unless they are very clean. I have a phobia about catching other peoples germs though this has gone a lot less since I had my baby. I am scared of spiders and flying. I am also afraid of heights.

I feel for you with the OCD and the fear of germs. That can really make things difficult. Yeah kids have a tendency to cause us either to become more paranoid about germs or less I have found. I am glad to hear you are able to find ways to cope.

Thanks my friend. Yes I am overcoming my struggles though ocd will probably be with me for life. However I am now training to be a counsellor and also run a support group for people with ocd.

This is a hard phobia to get over but don't feel alone. The host of deal or no deal, Howie Mandel, also has this fear as well. If he can be a tv host with people touching him, you will be fine too.

Lilapsophobia - Fear of TORNADOES and hurricanes. I'm extremely afraid of tornadoes. It sucks. Everytime it storms and I even think it might be bad I start to freak out. It started when I was in 7th or 8th grade and got worse over the years. I use to have my cousin (who is also afraid of storms) come and check me out of school if the clouds looked dark. I'd sit in the guidance counlsors office until she got there. I wouldn't buy a house or rent a place without a basement either. I did once and truly regretted it. I was freaked out and running to my sister in laws house at all hours of the night because she did have one. My husband thinks I'm nuts. I also will call into work if there is a threat of severe weather that night. It wouldn't be so bad (about going to work) but there is no TV to watch the weather, no internet, and it's a big warehouse (walmart). And one of the first things they tell you in tornado safety is don't go to a warehouse. My guidence counlsor is high school told me to learn more about them and that would ease my fear. It back fired. The more I learned about them and their unpredictable ways the more my fear grew. I think I'm doing better until that first bad storm hits - then I'm freaking out again. All the things that I did learn and all the things that I know when it's not storming (about probabilty and everything) is thrown right out the window. My poor family gets phone calls in the middle of the night to talk to me while it's storming to calm me down. God love them. My hubby is usually at work durring those calls. I've even went and stayed with my in laws cause I was scared (they came and picked me up) and they didn't want me to be alone. I've nerve pills too that I take. But they don't do me much good for work - cause they put me to sleep. The funny thing is it's only 1 millagram!!

WOW - I can't believe that woman seriously thought that was a good idea. I am glad that I do know a lot about tornado safety. It surprises me sometimes (I guess cause I think everyone should know) that people don't know the basics. I wonder who told that woman that! Scary thought. I am very glad to have some understanding family memebers. It does help out a lot.

I don't know who tuaght her that but it got me as well. Of course here in Florida they didn't for a long time teach about tornado weather, which really considering how many we get they should. We learned in Michigan because we would get a lot of them every year.

I can understand that fear. I know how bad both Tornadoes and hurricanes can be. With how unpredictable tornadoes can be it probably didn't ease your fear. At least you know what to do during one. I've seen many people who don't. They are never informed. I had one woman tell me during tornado weather that we had to go up to the top floor and sit under the window, that it was the safest place. Yeah right. At least you are taking the right steps to at least be safe during one. Sounds like some of your family understand which can make a big difference I know. Having them willing to help and give you support is always a good thing.

I think any fear or phobia will alter the way you live. I HATE rodents. Mostly rats and mice. I know it is a phobia and there is no foundation for the fear but I just can't help the way I feel. I know when there is a mouse or rat nearby, I can "feel" their presence. But because of this, I keep decon in the closets and pantry and in the garage.

Oh I feel for you with that one. My dad has that but at least he knows where it came from. He grew up in a bad area of Detriot where they had sewer rats in the area. I can imagine though how it will effect you but it sounds like you are doing all you can to control it which is good.

i don't like being in any kind of crowds, happened when i got older. i freak out. i used to go to all kinds of concerts, bars whatever. now if i go anywhere, i have to go to an outdoor function. that way i can control where i am. but i also have a fear of driving. i don't know why. i hate to drive. especially at night because i have difficulty seeing. which is normal, but i think it hinders my life, as i don't go out anywhere after dark unless someone drives me or i go to the local market. now it gets dark here at 5pm so you can imagine how bored i am. : ) when i go out on the weekends it feels like i am in a new world.

I don't go out a whole lot anyways but I agree with out door ones you can control it a bit better. It's at least easier to move away from the crowds then. I understand that about the night time. The bright lights from cars make it hard for me to see and hurts my eyes so I don't drive a lot at night. With it getting dark earlier it does make it difficult. I try to get everything done before hand but it doesn't always work out that way.

I have a big fear of closed spaces and heights, espcially heights. What is strange is that both of these fears came on late in life. I was not afraid of either of these until my late 30's! There was not a precipitating event either!

Oh I know how that is. My fear of crowds was always there but it was very managable up until my late 20's. It has continuely gotten worse with age. You'd think I'd get used to it over time but I don't. It's frustrating and I can't say besides being in a car accident anything that would have pushed it from being an inconvienence to being one I can't control at all.

I'm afraid of grills on the ground (like for water drainage or heat vents.) I know it comes from my childhood when I was little & fell on a heating vent and burned my hand. I don't actually remember it, but in 1985 I had to walk across a grill that connected the ferry to the loading dock, I was in shock by the time I got across. The whole, uncontrollable shaking & cold to the touch. Took most of the trip to recover! A friend had developed agoraphobia a number of years ago but Wellbutrin helped her recover. Have you tried anti-depressents? My running into grills isn't as frequent as you having to adjust your life to your phobia.

I've been on anti-depresents. I can't take Wellburtin but others have eased them somewhat but not that much. Not enough to really function for long in some places. I'm glad though it did help your friend. That's good to hear.

Wow! I didn't know there were so many names for phobias. Let's see.... Aphenphosmphobia - Fear of being touched I have this but only when I am sleeping. I feel as if I need to protect myself so I sleep with a body pillow on one side and my partner on the other. I used to have the position the bed so I would have the wall on one side and my partner on the other...but since getting a body pillow (and I'm s short stuff), I can turn my bed anyway. Arachnephobiba - Fear of spiders This is the big one for me. It is a fight or flight each time I encounter a spider. If I am alone, I will kill it but my heart is racing to the point of 30 minutes of aerobics. ha ha If anyone else is home or can help, then they best get it for me because I am not forced to fight. And my kids even know that if they miss it, lie to me! Because I will not go back into that area and will be scared each time I have to go past the area. But my son is great! He will get it every time and ensure me sometimes by asking me if I want to see it. LOL My 6th child (little girl) does not like killing them and will get a piece of paper to free them. Now that I really can't watch! I'll have to bookmark that page. There are some pretty interesting phobias there. Thanks for sharing!

OH I know I had no clue there was so many of them. I knew some, mostly ones that were in my family but that list was long. Now some mean the same thing. There are about six I think all dealing with the fear of crowds or fear of people, agoraphobia is just the most well known name for it. My sister has Arachnephobia as well. I just don't like them but I do understand the fear of them. She can't even look at a picture of them.

Crowds for me are really hard and the worst part is a crowd might only be four people, it all depends on the space we are in. If people are too close to me I panic. I can imagine trains or subways like that would be frightening. We don't have anything like that around here so thankfully I won't be put to that test. Good luck with yours

I swear I have a phobia of stupid people. It isn't that they frighten me--far from it, but when I'm about to go into a situation where I have to deal with a known stooge, I get the same sort of anxiety that an ophiophobe might get if they're about to deal with a snake. I wish I were kidding.

Wow I hear you girl. I once hid out in the automotives section in Walmart for at least a half hour before I could get a grip on myself and make it to the safety of my vehicle. I've even left half filled grocery carts in the middle of an aisle just because it was time to go and that means now. I think my phobia is a product of my Crohns disease. Which always left me in a panic. I had to start planning everything around it. I hate the way that it rules my life and has made me so "paranoid" about being away from home.

I know how horrible it is. I stay in a lot because of it. When I do go shopping I go at really off times, like when stores first open or if they are open 24 hours I'll go at 1 in the morning, they usually aren't crowded then. The hard part is during the holidays. Trying to go in to do gift shopping with the crowds there more then any other time. I have ended up leaving so many times it's not funny at all. Having to work around our fears makes life very difficult I know. We try to do the best we can but there are times when it just makes me so frustrated and depressed.

I have claustrophobia. This is the fear of small places. What makes this phobia a pain is that I also have Asthma. When my asthma is acting up I feel like everyone near me is taking my oxygen. I have a hard time breathing. My mom likes to go to these free dinners, where you listen to a speaker for an hour and then you have a nice dinner. It never fails these meeting are in very small restaurants. For the most part this phobia is controlable, however there are times when it is best for me to stay at home. When my claustrophobia is acting up I hate everyone. I feel like the room is closing in on me ever if I am outside. Some times these episodes are followed by panic attacks. The best think is that as long as my asthma is not acting up I can control my phobia and when my asthma is acting up I have medication to control the symtoms. There are more than 300 phobias that are listed. I did not know there were so many. When I saw this discussion I looked up phobias and could not believe some that I saw. I can understand a fear of animals of all types. There were phobias listed where people are afraid of air. That is strange. The best thing is there is medication or actions that we can take to aleaviate the symptoms of the phobia.

I feel for you. I can feel that way with crowds, like I can't breathe and I end up with a full blown panic attack. It can really be upsetting. I know it's amazing how many there are. Some are really different. I didn't know there were so many until I took a look one day. I guess there is one for everything just didn't think about it before then.

I can relate to everything you say here icequeen, I haven't been on a bus or train in over 10 years, & very rarely go in cars unless I have no choice, I have to cycle everywhere, so long trips are pretty much out of the question for me. The last time I travelled any distance was to London 2 years back., it was only a 3 hour trip & I felt so ill the entire time I was there that I never ate for 24 hours. I just couldn't stomach anything, & i felt physically exhausted. the annoying part was, I forced myself to go because it was to see my favourite band & at the show I was forced to stay right at the back, & almost passed out a few times.

I am terrified of spiders. It's not an unusual phobia I know but I am particularly scared of them. There was no single thing that made me scared of them, I have just been scared for as long as I remember. Even a tiny money spider that is only about 3mm wide being in my room would be enough for me to go and sleep on the sofa when I was small. I don't think I can get over the fear because everything I have heard of that is meant to cure a phobia involves facing that phobia and I never want to be that close to a spider. I don't even like saying the word because it makes me think of them.

I am phobic of other people vomiting, which is a form of emetophobia and it's tough to have when you are a parent. My daughter got sick this weekend and my husband had to take care of it 100%. I am tired of those comments "oh you are a bad mother if you cannot take care of your sick kids" or "you need to get over it" NO I cannot! And I am a fkn good mother! Besides most of the time my kids have illnesses that doesn't involve vomiting thank goodness and I am ALWAYS there to take care of them! Just because I cannot handle puke doesn't make me a bad person!!

Thank you for your kind comment as it took me some time to get back and I do apologize. My kids are still too young to really understand that I have this phobia but one day they will. And you are right, just because I am a mom doesn't mean I am supposed to be "Super Woman". I do a lot more than many other mothers do... and just because I cannot deal with puke doesn't mean I am irresponsible. And I have been to that forum, and I couldn't stay on it only because the puke talk just.... upset me too much since my phobia is worse when it comes to others being sick.

No of course it doesn't make you a bad mother or person. Some people can't handle that. I'm not afraid of it but it is not something I enjoy doing either. Some people need to realize that just because you are a mother doesn't mean you are Wonder Woman. I swear some people think that if you can't do everything and anything as a mother then there is something wrong with you. Your husband and kids understand, they are the important ones. Those others tell them to get a life nine of them if neccessary, since they are being so catty.

I'm full blown emetophobic, so I understand what you're going through! You know better than to listen to anyone who doesn't understand. People often shrug off our phobia as something "everyone goes through", which is a lie. Not everyone has the immediate feels-like-dying panic attacks that we get when we see vomit or even when we just hear that someone in the office has a stomach bug. I'm not going to say that you are normal, because we do suffer from a disability, though your actions were normal. And if your family isn't suffering, (which it looks like your husband stepped up and did his daddy-duties!) then no one can say anything to you. I can offer a bit of help. Go to www.emetophobia.org, they are discussion forums and links to aid in conquering this phobia. The support from the users is priceless and one of the mods, Sage, has devoted her life to helping emets cope and overcome their fears. Visit the site, read a bit, and tell me what you think. Also, if you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to contact me!

The strangest one i've come across is a friend of a friend that I know has a phobia of buttons, he will not let anyone into is house with clothing with any kind of buttons on them. Really strange one. Mine like yourself is agoraphobia, it causes me all kinds of grief dealing with every day life. I also suffer from emetophobia which is the fear of vomiting. I used to think I was a total nutter with this one, but apparently is one of the most common phobias.
