1 avatar, but a gazillion choices...

Hello,
I'm pretty new here and am wondering something. I'd like to add a pic to my profile, but I don't know what is the best. I don't even know what, in this situation, "the best" means...
In your opinion, which should I use as an avatar:
- My own photo
- A pic of some favourite famous person
- An animal
- Something abstract (colors, shapes, that don't mean anything)
- Something funny
- Something that moves (animated gif)
- Something else?...

Thanks everyone for your input, I appreciate it.
I have now created my avatar. It's a photo I took, which I quite like because the cat (not my cat) is standing with all four paws on the same spot.

p.s. I am planning on becomming a profesionnal animal photographer, so this pic does actually kinda show who I am.

I don't think it really matters all that much, aside from the fact that for the most part each is unique. If you have a picture that maybe defines who you are you might take that route (lol I have my dog at the moment - mainly cause it's the only decent picture I have on my computer that's not of my kids - and I won't use them) but I think often it just makes your name stand out more - people may be inclined to remember a picture easier than what they will a name.
Remember too that most images found on the internet are copyright so you can't use them. Yes I know lots do but in reality they could get in a lot of trouble for it.

It is all a matter of personal preference, so there is no right or wrong decision.
You can always choose an avatar and then change it as your mood changes. I started with a cartoon image of a pirate, followed by an animated sand timer, a blue genie, a santa for Christmas and am now using a piper for New Year. As soon as New Year is passed I shall be changing my avatar for something else, but I have not decided what yet as the choice is virtually unlimited.
