The Edge has done well for himself and has definitely been a great asset to U2. I don't consider him a guitar great though. His riffs are too simplistic and (other than having a distinctive style) he hasn't revolutionized anything in music or guitar. He is an awesome player and (once you get past the political rants) U2 puts on a great show, but I reserve "guitar great" and "best ever" statuses for those who bring us to a new place with their guitar.

I think he's the best. But i also think that tells you something about my age. So many great kids playing today IMO.

I think the Edge is a good guitarist, however, far from the best. This is a very broad discussion because people like different styles of music and thus different styles of guitar playing. To answer your question directly, is he the best, no. Is he good, of course.

Hi,I'm Ankit from Kolkata India. I definately agree that THE EDGE is the best guitarist of all time. All the othe metal bands and contemporary rock bands sounds allmost same to me except U2..... U2 is my inspiration. I just love the way he plays 'bad' n where the streets'. He has just given music n sound a new defination. From the time I've heard U2. I'm finding it hard to listen to other bands. Hope all of u agree.............????

I still think Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist ever, The Edge is a close second. What I like most about The Edge's playing is his absolute devotion to finding the right guitar part that will best serve a particular U2 song. His explorations of digital delay is now considered legendary and pioneering. I remember Mike McCready's guitar parts in "Given To Fly" was quickly compared to The Edge's playing. But The Edge's foray into digital delay is only one part of his legacy. He is also very good at devising ambient guitar sounds and wah pedals (in "Achtung Baby" and "Pop"). Truly, he has expanded the capabilities of the electric guitar in so many ways.

Im a great fan of U2 and the edge. His distinct signature clean tone with a well calculated delay setting makes U2 sound so great. His creativity with music is something very few people can even try to understand because his delays are so beautifully set that a simple plucking pattern with those settings generates a steady rythym for U2's songs. Take note of the delay in Still haven't found and you'll know what I mean.
