Sea Monkeys

My daughter keeps a small tank with these odd sea monkey creatures living in it. The tank has recently become really disgusting looking with algae across the top and dead sea monkey bodys floating around the bottom. For anyone who doesn't know what they are, they're sort of like a hairy amoeba. I think they're gross and I'd love to dump the contents of the tank but I feel it would be cruel, both on the innocent sea monkeys, and on my daughter. Every time one dies there seems to be another one in it's place. Has anyone else any experience of these things? Any idea how long they last? And how do I clean the tank, or do I bother cleaning it?

Thats terrible, but I know what you mean. I have a funny Seamonkey story. When I was little I got seamonkeys from selling seeds and stationary products. I heard that they could catch cold from humans. So like the stupid kid I was I coughed into the top of my tank to see if they caught my cold. Well they didn't live very long. But probably because I was a kid and didn't take good care of them... For years I would have dreams of little seamonkeys chasing me with runny noses... it's funny now..but not then..lol Here is a link that will give you all the seamonkey info you need and more..lol For those that don't know about Seamonkeys, check it out it's a very cute site. http://www.sea-monkey.com/

I checked out the link, thanks Mari. I had never known about Sea Monkeys before this discussion, and it is very interesting. Too bad, that you had those nightmares...glad you can laugh about it now, sometimes, nightmares persist even as adults.

How to Raise Sea Monkeys Sea-monkeys are pets that are related to brine shrimp. They are very easy to care for, can live to 2 years, here is the link that i think will help you out ..here it is.. http://www.wikihow.com/Raise-Sea-Monkeys there was alot more information i found..but hey are all basically the same..i thought this was the best..but they really dont last that long..and the algae thing is actually good, they feed on that as you will read..and i know its nasty, lol but thats what ya get with them..or anything living in water..good luck!!

I never had any luck with those things. Neither did my kids. Maybe you could ask her to get rid of them and get some fish instead.

Oh no. I hate fish. I think they're lovely to look at and everything, but I know that I'd be the one to have to clean the tank and I wouldn't be able to do that.

My Daughter got sea monkeys for Christmas 04 and their still going. Easiest pets ever, fed every 3-4 months (or when we remember) as they should eat the algae in the tank. We also change the water or part of it at this time, Than leave them on the window until we remember them again. lol

Transferring to a large bucket the creatures along with their water cannot do any harm. Then you can clean the tank and fill it with fresh water and transfer the good things into it. But please do it along with your daughter and not in her absence!

wow, i never heard of seamonkeys until you mentioned them. but you need to clean the tank once in a while. you know that stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, right? you need to explain to your kid that it's not healthful to have stagnant water in the house because it puts you at risk for dengue fever.

Omg I use to have sea monkeys when i was little i didn't know they still had them.. I remember that i use to think that my little monkeys would grow to look like the little cartoon sea monkeys.. and i was disappointed to see these weird little things in my tank.. And i remember they would say that you could train them and it would show them as little families.. they were so cute.. but they look so different in real life.. But i didn't know they lived that long.. Thats cool that the kids of today can experience those little sea monkeys.. i am going to have to get some for my grandaughter.. LOL.

Does this ever bring back memories? I did not even think you could get them anymore. I am sure my Mom would dump ours and make up some excuse as to why she did. I sure don't remember. I have to get myself some of these and grow them for my granddaughter. I guess I will be sorry in the end.

Not something I've ever heard of, can't you try and persuade your daughter to trade them in for something else, maybe something she really wants, but not been able to get, like a 30 stone gorilla, or a pet tiger, something she can take out for a walk on a lead, (or hold hands with if its the gorilla), I'm sure she will have so much fun with one of these animals she will not have time to think about monkeys - sea ones or any other type. Or how about a virtual aquarium for her computer screen, so much easier to look after than the real thing. Even better get her some talking cans and rocks to keep her company, these will blow her brain so much, the sea monkeys will be history, without her even knowing.

She's bad enough without the talking cans and rocks. I have thrown out a full bag of chestnuts, a bag of shells, and a bucket of stones in the last week. I'm surprised they all hadn't started talking to each other they were in her room that long, but part with them she would not. I thought it was only boys were supposed to be into these disgusting things.

Ah yes... sea monkeys... the lovely little critters that look like a piece of hair with a bazillion legs... LOL Can you tell we had them in our house too, once upon a time? My daughter didn't have a tank -- only a large fish bowl. We did change the water. Every now and then, we (well, I.. yuck) would pour a little of the bowl water into another container, scoop the critters out with a fish net and drop them in, then scrub out the bowl. We'd refill it, let the water come to room temperature, and put them back in. They never seemed to suffer for the change of water or anything and she did have them for months.

Yes I bet you would like to dump the sea monkeys, I think that it is best for you to tell your daughter to cleank the tank, and see what she says first. It must be dreadful and hopefully your daughter gets the algae cleaned and maybe then it would not smell so bad.

no idea but i have bought up fishes in tank i used to have the filter which has a good cleaning capability which would clean the tank by itself by sucking all the algae and keeping it clean for many days so if u can purchase and do that then then can leave a still long.

Did you say water with amoeba?? Dont think twice, just trash the whole thing. It could make you and everyone in the house sick. Istead try getting these light fixtures...they look like night lamps with artificial fish floating in it. You can just plug it in...no cleaning no mess. Or if you dont find it, then see what your daughter is into now...mayb get her a stuffed toy, a barbie doll with a doll house..that would be nice.

This brought back a few memories! I didn't know that sea monkeys were even still around but I begged for some when I was 9 and had them for a very short time. I think that they don't last long from what I recall. They certainly never made it long enough to become the family pet (or family amoeba!lol)

I once saw a website about those strange creatures! :p they seemed very ugly. Can you post some pictures of your tank?
25 Jan 07
Ooh, yeah, please do! I forgot completely what they actually look like! All I remember is the little black squiggles swimming around the little plastic 'pond' thing.

I had them growing up and have been looking for some for my son. When I did have them, I had a small tank for them and would take a strainer put it over another bowl and poor the critter water and all into the bowl carefully. Then I would clean out the tank, put a little of the original water in the tank with new water I had left out for 24 hours (Chlorine, did not want the critter dying, I was 8 then) and then just gently ease the guys back into their clean home. Kept them for about a yr. If I remeber correctly they seemed to multiply and a couple would float at the top, so I think they just "replenished" themselves.
