Great Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

United States

It is snowing and cold outside tonight. We got 8 inches of snow last night. This is the prefect time of year to sit around the fire and enjoy hot chocolate. Have you ever made your own cocoa? It is great and so easy to make. Can you believe what a box of prepackaged hot chocolate costs these days? It is unreal. This recipe is great to give in gift baskets. I have typed the recipe with the tag you need to add if you are giving as a gift. Enjoy and try to stay warm this winter. Hot Chocolate Mix 3 cups of powdered milk 1/2 cup cocoa 3/4 cup sugar Dash of salt Sift and mix well the ingredients in a large bowl.I use my kitchenaid stand mixer to mix mine up. Pack the mix into an airtight container. Don't forget to attach this to the jar. Hot Chocolate Serves 1 4 Tablespoons Hot Chocolate Mix 8 ounces boailing water Marshmallows or whipped cream Place the hot chocolate into a mug. Pour in the boiling water. Stir until Chocolate Mix is dissolved. Garnish with Marshmallows or whipped Cream. I like to add a candy can to the jar or cup to use as a stirer. It adds a peppermint taste to the Hot chocolate.

Great basic recipe! A fair portion of my holiday gifts this year (for giving) were homemade cocoa and coffee mixes. I made Black Forest Cocoa (add cherry drink mix - like KoolAid - unsweetenend), Dark Chocolate Orange Cocoa (less sugar, add orange zest and if desired, unsweetened drink powder), Raspberry Hot Chocolate, Raspberry Mocha, Peppermint Mocha, and Peppermint Cocoa (for both of these - crush peppermints in food processor and add to drink :). I think that's it! You can also make flavored coffe creamer with white creamer and/or milk powder for base. Just add any flavorings (e.g. coca and crushed peppermint for peppermint mocha creamer). Liquid flavorings will also work, but work better if you have a food processor *and* let it sit for a few days so flavor can disperse. I love homemade cocoa mix - I really like being able to both create flavors and adjust the sweetness for a more "dark chocolate" flavor when I'm in the mood. ~Sara

Oh yeah. I have just the recipe for you. I have a great chocolate cake recipe and it is so easy to make. Are you into Sourdough? I have a great one made with sourdogh too. I have not been a member long so I cant just copy and paste from my files. It takes me awhile to type them in and proof read it so the ingredients are perfect so I will try to post the chocolate cake mix recipe within the next few days. I have tons of homemade mixes as I love to cook and bake but I am a from scratch kinda cook. Keep checking back. Enjoy the hot chocolate. I also have a white hot chocolate mix that is just wonderful. Enjoy!

I am soooooo jealous. I want 8 inches of snow!!! We might get some snow this wekend. But they are not even predeicting how much. So, it might just be a dusting. :( Well, I am not allowed to have ot chocolate anymore. But I have to agree with you that this would be a perfect time to have some. But if you ever run across a sugar free hot chocolate mix or recipe, please let me know. :) As I am not longer allowed to have stuff like that being pre-diabetic. :(

Yes, it is so easy to make that it still amazes me that companys make a killing off it commercially. Why would anyone purchase a commercial mix when it is this easy to make at home and so much better.

Bring on the recipes! This is another good one to add to my collection. Boxed mixes cost at least $1 for 6 servings. This is quite economical. Thanks again!

When I prepare mine the old fashioned way. Meaning the way my Grandmother made it. We took milk and heated it then aded cocoa, sugar vanilla, and just a tad butter. Yummy. We did not always add the butter. I tend to like mine without the butter.

Ahh! But just think how good it will taste in a large mug on a cold night! I have never had brown sugar in hot chocolate before. I am curious as to how it tastes.

I tend to drink a variety of kinds. Depending on my mood. I often add some flavored jello to make it rasberry or some cinnamon oil to make it cimmamonie or a candy cane to make it have a peppermint taste. Just whatever my mood is, I have my hot chocolate accordingly.

very nice of you sharing that recipe... it's winter season in here but we usually grab the swiss miss or any hot cocoa mix with marshmallows with hot water as no hassle preparing then. soon if we can have the time we'll try your recipe.

I think you will enjoy the homemade mix even better than the swiss miss, although Swiss Miss is my favorite commercial hot chocolate mix.

I love making homemade cocoa. Your recipe sounds great. My mother in law make a mean hot cocoa recipe also. Mine is more of a single serving (I have duplicated it and doubled it, but I eye ball everything) For a single serving 2tbls of dutch cocoa, dash of salt, nutmeg, cinnaman, powdered milk, about 4 tbls of sugar (depending on taste, a dash of vannila. I mix this all up in the cup, then add a little milk until it turns into a paste, then I mix in the rest of the milk and heat up in the microwave. It is del.

I too just add this and that until it looks and taste right to me. It is hard to have a hot chocolate that appeals to everyone but this basic recipe is so easy to tweak and make it to each persons individual tastes.

We didnt have snow for Christmas either. One of the few years that I can ever remember that we did not have snow at least within a few days of Christmas. The weather is changing rapidly. It is scary. You never know what the weather will be. Hope you enjoy the hot chocolate

I love hot chocolate. I usually make mine by heating skim milk in the microwave, then adding Nestles chocolate powder or chocolate syrup. I like to put minature marshmallows, whipped cream or fluffernut on it. I also like using a candy cane as a stirrer to give it a nice peppermint flavor.

What is fluffernut? I have never heard of it. I too use the peppermint stick to stir it after Christmas, you can purchase them for just pennys each.

Alright you must be in Colorado (just kidding). Well I have to agree with all of the snow! A few years ago while I was living with a friend I came up with an amazing mix for hot chocolate. I do admit it is half home made half pre-packaged. Since I own a Starbucks Barista (espresso machine) I steam up milk to 160*, and add in packaged hot chocolate mix, chocolate syrup, and a little raspberry syrup. It is amazing!! But I must say yours sounds pretty tasty!

No I am not in Colorado. I am in West Virginia. We have those hills that the snow seem to get into and cant get out. LOL I bet rasberry syrup would be great in it. I have never used it. I will try it tonight. I have some in the cabinet. Thanks for the tip.

it is pretty simple. First you make the mix using all the ingredients listed. This is a bulk recipe. After your mix is made then you will use the tag instructions to make each individual cup of hot chocolate. I hope that makes sense. I am sorry that is was not easier to understand. I will try to post in simplier terms in the future. Thank you for taking the time to point this out to me.
