Plastic canvas needlepoint

Does anyone do plastic canvas needlepoint? I used to do it all the time, but I guess I burned out on it. I still like it, but don't have much time for it, it seems. Plastic canvas is a really cheap base product and it takes very little yarn to do a lot of needlepoint, so I like the cost factor. Is plastic canvas craft not as popular as it once was?

I think plastic canvas popularity may have waned, peavey. I still enjoy it, but I find a number of the readily available patterns to be a little "hokey." On the other hand, I have seen patterns/projects that I really liked - espeically some of those using finer-gauge canvas and the newer threads available. ~Sara

I thought the new patterns were kind of boring, but I thought it was just me. I guess there are only so many tissue box covers or little houses one can design before repeating oneself. I have a boxful of old pc magazines that have patterns I marked at one time as wanting to make, but haven't yet, so I won't be buying any new ones, anyway. (At least I have no plans to!) I've seen some pictures done in fine gauge plastic canvas that I'd like to try. IF I ever get my knitting caught up. :) THanks for responding.

I still do plastic canvas and its my craft of choice. I taught myself how to do plastic canvas when I was about 12 (and I am 39 now) and I enjoyed it then as much as I do now. However, I do think that the craft has lost its popularity for the most part. It get harder and harder to find supplies (Walmart carries very little plastic canvas anymore) and even bigger places like Michaels or AC Moore carries less and less. When I find good prices on things I usually stock up and I have enough stock now to do me for quite a while.

I hope it doesn't disappear altogether because I do still enjoy it. Some really cool things can be made from it.

Unfortunately I think many crafters have gone to doing those quick fast and in a hurry type crafts. Not many are doing the needlework crafts anymore. I know that as long as there are available supplies that I will continue as well. I agree that some really neat things can be made. My hubby and I are getting ready to start the fashion doll Dream Castle for our oldest daughter...wish I would have those to play with when I was a kid LOL

You know you do not hear about it as much as you used to that is for sure. You don't even see the canvas and books around as much either, or items done from it at shows as well. I have a couple of different books in my craft stuff, and so I might have to consider doing it again sometime once I move. It is truly and easy Craft to do as well.

Besides that, it's very inexpensive. I wish it hadn't fallen out of favor so fast.

I used to do crewel embroidery, and I even designed some embroideries for churches. I am back to doing traditional needlepoint on canvas now. Not cheap but so beautiful! The great thing about needlepoint is that you can travel with it, and if you do the continental stitch off a frame it doesn't get so distorted.
