I've not seen a single post on myLot about Rockabilly, but people like Rock N Roll & oldies. Surely I'm not the only person here that likes it?

Hey there, thanks for bringing my ghost town thread too life, since I created this i have come across a couple of other people into. a few have been into it & never even knew. what's ironic too me is, that many Americans don't know what it is even though that where it originates. But as soon as I tell them certain bands & artists then they realise, but had never heard the term Rockabilly. I love the Stray Cats, it's what started it for me really, they toured Europe about 2 years ago, & I went to see them in London, the show I was at is available on dvd "Rumble In Brixton"

I love hillbilly but I just can't get with rocabilly. To me the two just don't mix.....It would be like mixing opera with rap......oil and water. I like purity it's either one or the other but not both. Of course, I am of a generation that goes way back. I just can't get with the contemporary music. Maybe it's because my ears are sensitive. I try to keep an open mind but somehow I feel that rockabily oversteps its bounds and dilutes the purity of hillbilly music.

But music is continuously evolving, without that artists are left with nowhere to take it to make music theirs. It's all been done before. Playing Rockabilly never did Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash or Roy Orbison any harm, & that's just to name a few. The majority of early Rockabilly was as close to Hillbilly you could get, Johnny Horton, he even used Banjo's & Harmonica, & Carl Perkins was known as the Hillbilly Cat. So to say the 2 don't mix is an oxymoron, what 2 would this be?

You may be right. But I grew up in an atmosphere much different than today. We were calm, cool, and collected. Today's youth and their taste is just too much for me to swallow. I grant you that you have the right to your tastes as much as I do and I will not fault you on that. Just because music evolves, or has to, does not necessarily mean that improves. For example, can you compare rockabilly to Beethoven, Tchaikovsy, Brahms, Verdi and the like. Of course not. I will not put down rockabilly if you won't put down the past. However, I cannot accept that the classics have evolved to rockabilly, rock and roll, rap and the like.....it just aint so.

I love it. The first rockabilly song I can remember was by Guy Mitchel, simply titled Rockabilly. That was back in the late fifties I think.

I enjoy Guy Mitchell very much but I never considered him as a hillbilly or rock star. He was more country and western to my my way of thinking. His My Truly, Truly Fair was one of the first of his that I remember....and I go back a looooooooooooooooooong way.

I remember all those old fifties songs too. When Guy Mitchel visited Melbourne in the fifties he rode a horse from his downtown hotel to the venue, and remember Melbourne has trams. I go back a fair way too.

Hi! I just joined and thought I'd resurrect the Rockabilly love. I guess my favorite type is more on the punk side, like the Cramps, X, Social Distortion, Heavy Trash, etc but I really love the music of their forefathers (and mothers), too. Right now I'm really into Wanda Jackson. Any type of Rockabilly just gets my booty a-shaking like other music can't. There's a Rockabilly show (3 hours) every Friday night on the independent radio channel we have here in Seattle, you can listen to it online anytime at kexp.org. It's called "Shake the Shack", and it's loads of fun!

The Punk side & Psychobilly is fine by me, I grew up with Demented Are Go, it doesn't get much more punk than that :)

The discussion may be old, but that doesn't mean it's over. It's always nice to meet new people that appreciate similar music. Obviously you're more into the new side to things, Psychobilly etc, but it's all relative
