Cat toys

Zanies rainbow mice - They're small, furry and they rattle.

What kind of toys do you have for your cats? I recently bought a pack of Zanies rainbow mice, my cat likes them and since there's like 60 of them (got them for $8+shipping), if she keeps losing them, I just keep replacing them with new ones. Do you know of any cat toys that most cats really enjoy? The idea is keeping the cat busy when I'm busy (or out -- although my cat mostly sleeps when I'm not home). Also, they have to be safe for the cats.

My Waffles enjoys pushing and chasing little cat toy balls around and never seems to get tired of doing that. On the other hand, my Columbus prefers to play with a string toy. That toy has a little furry ball at the end of it that the cat likes to catch. He's ten years old, but plays like a little kitten.

Is the string toy one of those batting ones?

So it's like a cat dancer, but he doesn't want anyone to make the little bird twirl in the air?

No, not really, lol! It has a short wand with a string attached. At the end of that string is a stuffed furry "ball" that looks like a little bird. Columbus just loves to pounce on it and hold it down with his paw once he "catches" it.

Well, my cat's absolute favorite toy would have to be our dog! Ha! When the dog is in his crate, the cat loves to sit outside the crate and reach in with his paw and irritate the dog! Once he has the dog angry and barking, he slides slyly away and sits behind the sofa and enjoys watching the family scold the dog for barking! But, on to actual toys. Our cat loves simple things. We have spent loads of $$ on actual toys, only one of which he plays. That one being the 'fishing pole.' It is bascially a wand onto which a stretchy string is attached and at the end of the string is a feather, bell and small felt fish. He loves for us to hold that and let him chase and jump for it. Like 'nukn' above said, our cat LOVES the plastic ring that is torn off a new gallon of milk! He enjoys batting it across our wooden and linoleum floors! The weight of his paw casues it to flip sometimes and he pounces on it like it is a mouse or something!

That's funny (that your cat's favorite play is annoying the dog, what a classic!) If I had more space (and more money) I'd get my cat a play mate too. But alas... :|

Mine get bored with store toys after the first hour. I make what my father did for our cats. Get some clean. old mismatched socks and stuff a few into one without holes - preferably a long tube sock. Get some dried catnip and pour it generously into the sock and knot the end. Shake it good to distribute the catnip thru it. Throw it into the cats' way and watch the action! These usually lat a few weeks and then make another. Cheap, too.

I did the sock thing already :D But my cat, initially playing with it, somehow ended up a little spooked by its size. So I kept reducing the size of the sock filling until there was only an empty sock! It's a little weird, but as she got bigger, she started to prefer smaller toys.

My cat loves toy mice, so she has a huge surplus of those. I also have this over the door toy that hangs over any door, with a stretchy string that hangs down with a toy attached to the end. She loves playing with that and batting it all around. She tries to take it with her sometimes. I believe it's called the Cataction Bungaree or something to that effect. I found it at Petsmart.

I have three female young cats. We bought them all kinds of toys, but the thing that they like best is the ring off the milk carton. That's right something as simple as the milk bottle plastic ring. They will play with it for hours and even fight over it. It is best and cheapest toy I have found.

I've been told cats like this, however, in my country, milk comes in cartons :) Buying milk in bottles is very expensive and most brands no longer use them for packaging. I'd be a little afraid to leave her to play alone with it, I'm afraid she'd eat part of it or something (she did something similar twice and it wasn't pretty, so I try to be cautious with what I let her play with).

Haha, there are some creative, safe, and fun activities/toys your felines can enjoy. Simple, inexpensive items can include candy and milk rings. When you have a bag of skittles or M&Ms, you may be surprised to see the ejoyment your cat will get otu of batting them around. The same goes for the plastic milk rings you tear off the lid of a new gallon of milk. Instead of throwing it away, let your cat have it. Most cats enjoy scooting it across your floors, and it constantly flips around when they bat it.

I will try the M&M's. I suspect she'll just start chewing the plastic though :D

Wow, I thought that I was the only one who had a cat that enjoyed those milk rings! My cat loves to take his paw and bat them across the linoleum floor! As you say, the weight of his paw often makes it flip and he loves to pounce on it!

My cats love those balls with the bells, but they only seem to play with them when you are sleeping. So my husband had to take away all the poor kitty balls. : )

Heh, I had five of those, but the cat hid or lost them somehow. They were medium-sized and chimed, and yet I have no idea where they are!

Ah, yes, simple things work too, but I was wondering about toys that cats can use while unsupervised... I can't leave my cat playing with a string, because she sometimes gets entangled and she might suffocate! I know of a cat that almost strangled himself because of this.

The best toys I found , and they dont cost anything are a cardboard box or a scrunched bit of paper.

I sometimes use bags too, she likes to hide and fetch toys inside them but they don't entertain her for very long...

Hi there...amazingly cats seem to love the toys that we give them which are free such as cardboard boxes of all various sizes, paper bags, plastic bottle cats from beverage bottles, the neck rings also from beverage bottles, corks, paper balls, etc. They so easily replaced when lost or destroyed and new ones are like new toys in their minds as well. The cardboard boxes can be designed by cutting different holes of various sizes for them to hide and seek, play through, etc. As a professional animal trainer for exotic cats as well as domestic cats we play a game called "101 things to do with a box" and it truly does get a cat to use their imagination which lasts for greater lengths of time than smaller store-bought toys.

My cats love little toy mice, of course they lose them all the time. They also love to play with toy balls, little plush ones, as well as the ones that have the bell inside. One of my cats really loves to play with the foil/cellophane wrappers that come off little candies and chocolates, she loses those all over the place.

My cat likes celophane wrappers too, but she loses interest in them very quickly. She also loves to go through the shopping bags and sniff them out thoroughly! :D

I find "Da Bird" to be the best cat toy ever. My cats go insane over it. It's interactive though, so you'll have to be there. Scratching posts are always good for cats when you're out!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've looked it up, but I don't buy toys with feathers as my cat might eat them up and then cough them out and throw up all over the floor =X She does have a scratching post which she uses and an old leather chair (I think I posted this before, hehe, deja-vu!).

What if the cat eats the foil? Isn't it dangerous? My cat sometimes shreds the paper balls... I'd be concerned about tin foil :(

I can't use those mice. My dog immediately steals them and breaks them open in seconds lol. My cat likes those tiny tennis balls. She throws them with her nails and chases them. Anddd some other stuff around.

There are some mice which are solely made of fabric, but your dog would probably still find a way to tear them to pieces :D I got a pair of those small tennis balls for my cat, but she found them to be too heavy and didn't fancy them much (hardly played with them at all).

I have spent so much money on toys for my cats that either don't get played with or get lost. My cats like simple things as well. They like boxes, straws and shopping bags among a few.

Yes, sometimes simple and cheap things work best :) I've been thinking about getting this thing called Peek a Prize, it's basically a box with holes, where you hide toys for the cats to fish out: http://www.catsplay.com/smartcat_peek.php3 But I don't know if they sell it over here and international shipping must be murder for that item! I could possibly build one myself, but I'd have to carefully sand it down.

Shazam, my cat, loves to play with tennise balls, string and plastic bags. Also, I have built a bed in the air for me, and he loves running up the ladder, running around and back down, like his own race track !!! Thank you for the fun ideas each of you shared !!!

My moms cat has fun with rubber bands. She plays with them when they are around. String is also fun for her too. She will even attack shoelaces when you are sitting down.

My Shenzi is very spoiled and of course she has a lot of little crinkle balls and mice and so on, but she always finds things around the house that she likes better. She did enjoy this one thing I bought her a while back. I can't remeber or know what to call it, but it's a little toy that you hang over a doorknob that they can bat back and forth. It was really good for her when she was younger and more playful and I didn't want her to be bored when there weren't any people around.

Someone suggested this kind of toy before (the one you hang on the door). In the meantime, I found this one: http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/main.detail.tpl.DETAIL.item.M9600.ref.CJ8/ I'm going to see if I can get one of these. It's a bit expensive for a toy though. What if she doesn't like it? :\ I wish these things had a trial period!
