My sister and I were chatting via instant messenger. Turns out she had a surplus of Pantene and is using it for laundry detergent. I would never have thought of it. She said a couple squirts doese the trick. She said it wasn't her original idea. What do you do like that?

I've used shampoo or dish soap for the laundry in a pinch. I buy all that kind of stuff at the dollar store. I don't use high-priced shampoos, the cheap stuff does fine on my hair. The only new clothes I buy are Levi jeans and shoes and sandals, usually from payless or walmart. Everything else comes from thrift shops and rummage sales. We also are in the business of buying abandoned storage lockers and selling the contents, and we keep lots of stuff for our family. I haven't had to buy sandwich bags since last summer! I keep a lot of cleaning products and stuff like that for our house. I also refurnished my dining room that way. Last summer we gave our pregnant daughter tons of baby stuff. Then whatever we don't want or can't use goes on ebay or in a rummage sale, and if it doesn't sell it ends up at the local thrift store or goodwill. I had at least six rummage sales last summer and made a bunch of money. My granddaughter Alex likes to shop on ebay and usually talks me into buying her something. For her birthday I got her a brand new pair of jeans with the $100 price tag still attached, for $20 including the postage.

Guess I am so cheap and loving Pantene that I would use it on me first if I could afford it. I shop almost only at church rummage sales and flea markets. Hardly ever pay regular prices for clothing and other things we use. It is a big deal when something new comes in this house. My stove is from the trading network. Only cost 100 dollars. We also belong to the freecycle groups. So you see what money we have goes elsewhere.

Pantene is expensive, so I'd probably only use it if it was the type that didn't work with my hair. You can use shampoo to do a lot of things, from washing dishes to mopping the floor. I clean the bathtub with it (I save free samples for that) as it takes out the soap ring very well. I've used it to clean just about anything. It's soap.

I shop at the scratch and dent stores in our town and frequently buy clothing from the Goodwill store. I have used shampoo to wash the dishes with and also for detergent when I would run out. Now I use it only for hand washable garments.

Yes, I read this idea on some cheap skate board. The pantene was free and I was out of laundry detergent. I personally would only use clear shampoo. It works really well for me. I have been using shampoo for months now I believe and the clothes don't look any different than they did before. I will probably go back to using laundry detergent when I find my next good deal. We have lots of other shampoo but only a limited amount of clear shampoo left. I am looking forward to seeing what cheapskate ideas the rest of you have.

I do what I have to do to get by. Sometimes, instead of just tossing out the shampoo bottle when I can't get any more out of it, I'll fill it up with water and wash my hair with the rest of the watered down shampoo. It does just as well, and makes the bottle go farther than it would have before. Those bottles really hold a lot of shampoo when you're done with them, no need to toss them out so quickly if you can help it.

I don't know if it's truly frugal to use Pantene shampoo in the place of laundry detergent, but I get what you're saying. I immediately thought of Flylady and the way she encourages you to clean with whatever you have. "Soap is soap," she says! If you truly have a bunch of that stuff and it works okay in the washing machine then it sounds cool to me. Oh, and to answer the qustion of your discussion topic, I am pretty cheap!

That's interesting. I'd never have thought of it either. The closest I've ever come to doing something like that was when I was making my own baby wipes for my dd.

When I was younger we used to have to put water in the shampoo bottle when it was almost empty otherwise my dad would get all mad lol other then that I have never heard of anything like using pantene for laundry detergent I must say though that it is a heck of an idea and probably works decent enough unless you get too much in there and it gets the bubbles all over the laudry room lol
