Honest Cabbie Returns Diamonds

United States
February 8, 2007 12:23pm CST
I was so impressed regarding an article I read on Yahoo this morning about the NY cabbie who returned a case of diamonds to one of his fares. The woman had only tipped him 30 cents on a $10.70 fare. The woman offered the driver a $100 reward for returning the diamonds to her. He didn't want to accept the money from her but in the end did take the money to make up for the revenue he lost in fares for the time he spent looking for the woman. Here is a link to the article so you man read it in its entirety. I thought it impressive and wanted to share with those who hadn't heard of it. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070208/ap_on_fe_st/honest_cabbie

That woman is sure lucky it was that cab driver and not somebody else. Thank God for such honest people, who are very few in today's world.

I read that before. I guess the reason the lady didn't want her name in the paper was because she was so cheap in the first place and left a whopping 30 cent tip.

It was enlightening to read that he didn't mind getting a small tip. He said that people may not have the money for a tip or get distracted when giving the tip.

You would not believe how many people pretend to "forget" that they were supposed to tip. I would not be surprised if she was a cheapie. They are usually the richest.

That is so cool. It is nice to know that there are still honest people in the world. Now days you only hear about all the bad stuff that is going on. I think internet and Newspapers need to post more good items than all the bad stuff that is going on.

that's another act of honesty. it's very inspiring to see people like this who do good deeds without asking for anything back. i think the cab driver made a right decision in accepting the 100dollars. He should be compensated for the gas used and the revenue he could have earned had he not spent time looking for the owner of the case.

I read about that. It's nice that there are honest people out there. He really could have "stuck it to her" since she skimped on the tip so badly. Can you imagine how much money he could have made pawning those rings or selling them on Ebay or something? He was honest and returned them. Amazing. You don't see that much anymore, sadly.

Wow..I just read the ariticle. It is impressive. I don't think I know anyone (if I know my friends well enough) who would return the diamond rings. Do you think you'd return them? I don't know. Considering that I'm living on a budget now, I think I'd probably have kept them. Still, such honesty from a New Yorker and a cabby at that. Makes one feel..humbled.

If only all people are like the cab driver i think this world will be like a paradise...Its good to have a cab driver like him..A clean heart and soul can never be equal to any amount of money..Having a clean and nice work is already enough...We should be all honest always...

Yes, N.Y. gets a bad rap from the media and most of the world but we have some really great people in this city. This is not the first time a N.Y Cabbie has done such a noble deed. Give the nice people of N.Y. a hand, they take enough guff most of the time.

Return the diamonds? hel no!!I would have kept the diamonds. The cabbie probably help this jeweler save his job mong other things.People might say that it's best to be honest, i believe that in some cases it is,no way!You always hear of someone returning something of value to someone and they always get "rewarded"with some crumbs!

Thank you for responding. But you should also know that people aren't always driven by greed. Many often are happy with the knowledge that they have done a good deed and that is all the reward they need.

Honesty in itself is the best reward. If you can sleep at night knowing that you did the right thing, that is the best sleep there is. No guilt and no regret. Honesty is genuinely its own reward.

Materialism is suffocating our society these days, and that is one reason why this kind of story is so unusual. The good will that will be spread by this story far outweighs any money that might have exchanged hands here. It far outweighs any profit the cabbie could have gotten from the diamonds. That's why I can't understand most property crimes. They lead to a very short-term goal (money) that often is simply wasted on crap anyway. If you're caught for crimes, your life essentially ends as you get swallowed by the criminal justice system. What are people thinking? Good for this cabbie, and good for the world at large.

His parents must really be proud of him. I think he really a very honest man, imagine, he spent so much time looking for the woman even though he is still on duty knowing that the woman needs it so bad ... it's an act of selflessness...I wish the world should be made up of people like him...
