Does this annoy anyone?

I wondered if this annoyed anyone. You pick a discussion and reply to it. You go back and check it days later and find that you are one of only 3-4 replies. Thing is the other replies don't answer the OP's question or is otherwise off topic. You on the other hand gave a well thought out answer that clearly was on topic and answered the questions brought forth. Now does it annoy you when the OP has not chosen anyone (let alone you) as best response even after a week or more has gone by? I am not saying this has been done to me or anything like that it is just something I noticed. (it was after someone posted that they realized they had many unresolved discussions that I started to notice)

I wish there were an easy comeback to this, but (at least for my money) others here have touched on the answer. Earlier in the week, I posted a discussion and had 96 answers within 24 hours. Although it required some reading and consideration, choosing a "best answer" was fairly easy. Next day, I posted another discussion, and had maybe a couple of replies-- neither of which were particularly brilliant. Bottom line, for me, is that I guess I'm really not going to choose a best answer until there's something there to choose from. And sometimes that takes a long time, I guess (I am not sure HOW long, as I am still pretty new here). I don't know why some discussions seem to catch on fire, while others go unnoticed. I try to be a good "debate host" and reply back to people who post intering comments, but I am not sure that really makes a different. But I just feel reluctant to choose a "best answer" until there's a reply of some quality to choose. Does that make sense?

Well I wouldn't choose a best response for the purpose of resolving all my discussions. There are a few messages I have gotten silly replies to and I won't give any of those people the 'honor' of best reply. I fully agree to waiting till you have something to choose from. I meant (and I wish you could edit your posts) if over a week has gone by and no one else is replying; if there is a good enough post then you should resolve it. (the you is the collective you not you in particular)

Yes maildumpter, this leaves me annoyed just as you described. It especially annoys me if it is a user who obviously knows better (high number and many other discussions with a chosen 'best response.') When I was a newbie, I didn't fully understand how to chose etc, but I learned. I will give the benefit of the doubt to a new person.

Yeah you kinda have to give newbies (like myself) some leeway so they can learn the lay of the land. I would just think if you (the collective you not you in particular) were one of say 4 replies and over a week goes by with no new replies; that you would get frustrated by the discussion being unresolved. ESPECIALLY if you are the only one who posted anything intelligent - not one word quips or answers that have nothing to do with the OP's discussion.

that's why i don't easily choose the best response especially if the discussion which i started only got one or two responses. i am still looking forward to some more better ones and i don't want to regret rushing for a decision. sometimes, it takes months for me to choose the best response. but atleast, i got something that is really worth of the title. sometimes, there are better responses coming up after i already had chosen. but that's okey. i cannot get back my decision. so, what i do is comment nicely to the person who responded and rate the response positively.

I have no problem with waiting to see what answers you get. I was just wondering how people who are only one of say 4 repliers in over a week feel when the OP hasn't resolved their discussions. Thanks for the imput!

It sort of annoys me, but what annoys me more is, when you give a really great response, and they mark the person that gave the worst answer possible as the best response.

Oh gosh yes! Or they give the best response to the only person who agrees with them even if the reply only says "I agree".

First maildumpster I want to say how sorry I am that people either misunderstood what you were asking or stopped reading after your 2nd sentence. It is very frustrating. Now back to the topic, yes it bothers me that people don't seem to pick a best response, even after a week of no new responses. If it is clear that their is a best response and after a week of no additional responses it should be picked. With that said, I read a discussion last week where someone was saying that they either don't or didn't like to leave a response after the best was given because according to them "What's the point?" So if people are thinking like that then the OP's who want to get more responses down the road say well no one will respond if I give the best response away. So they hold back giving it. Each person is entitled to give the best response to whomever they like, but it really should be the best at the time it was given. Their are a lot of large discussions out there that have plenty of excellant responses that don't have one picked either. I really don't kno what the big deal is, personally I ate seeing a bunch of unresolved discussions in that folder and usually clean them up with in a couple of days of no new responses. Just my 2 cents worth. Welcome to mylot and I wish you much luck here.

I only have one discussion that has been unresolved for several weeks and it is because their is only one answer. I was quick to pick best responses on a few of my early discussions that only had a few replies and none really worthy of a best response. They got brought back to life after getting some friends and I wish that I had waited on those as I got some quality answers that definetly deserved to get the award but sadly I threw it away. So I have waited on this one. Other than that I usually gice best response after 24 hours of no new posts. I like to clear them out of my unresolved as I feel I shouldn't start another discussion unless most are resolved. That's just me though I don't want to be overwhelmed. Thank you for the compliment.

Thank you for my welcome! Thank you for noticing how many people didn't understand or didn't read the whole post. This is a fantastic answer. I could care less if the best response is chosen before I reply. If I have something to say; I'm saying it!!! I have to agree with you; if more than a week passes and no one else is answering - go ahead and resolve the discussion. Thanks so much for your Quality post!!

I don't very often pay attention to who or if I have gotten best responses on discussions but I do know what you mean about knowing in my heart my response was by far the best (compared to the off topic or one word responses) and the best response was given to one of those. I have seen people choose a best response after only a few hours and only 3-4 responses, this doesn't make since but possibly the person doesn't understand they need to give people a chance to respond. Compared to some I guess I don't really start that many discussions but the ones I do I wait a week before picking a best response. As I've said before I don't like picking best responses because there are soooo many great "best" responses.

I don't think anyone should rush to pick a best response in any case. I also agree that they shouldn't be picked as best if they aren't.

It does not bother me if I am not chosen as the best response regardless of the other types of replies or no other replies. I am sure they are just waiting to see other responses as well and does not want to choose one too soon. I am still getting responses to some of my older topics. At some point though they should choose someone as the best response and not forget about the people who replied to them.

Excellent answer! I don't care if I am chosen but I also don't want to wait to long to chose a best response when I is up to me. I have decided that I will only resolve a discussion if it has not gotten a reply in over a week. I figure with the volume of people posting similar topics all the time that people probably won't even see my old discussion. (did that make sense? It did in my mind)

I have to admit, I'm kinda guilty of that. Sometimes I'll just forget that I have unresolved discussions. Other times, it takes me a while to sit down and choose one because there's too many good answers. And I want to give everyone that worked hard their best response. But I don't do it intentionally, so I wouldn't want anyone to get offended and think I've done it intentionally.

Thanks for fessing up LOL. I don't think anyone thinks it is ever done intentionally. I was just wondering IF it bothered anyone. I see it bothers some and not others.

Frankly, I completely disgree with the whole method of rating the discussion responses. How can you accurately rate something as + or - or best response It is too arbitary. I would prefer to see a scale of 1 to 10 and each time a member reviews a resonse they give a 1 to 10 rating. Then the best response category would be more dynamic. That is it would change over time as more people entered into the discussion and rated each response. The ongoing best response would be the one with the highest overall average rating.

I need to disagree. I don't feel that people replying to the original post should decide who best 'answered' the OP. It should be up to the OP since only they know if they were answered.

sometimes it gets tiring but not annoying because thats why were here to help each other out and discuss issues of intrest even if your discussion isn't good enought to get responses u want, buh hey just keep your head up.

I'm not worried about whether or not I get replies. I just noticed that some discussions go stale and nobody adds anything to it for over a week and the OP doesn't resolve the discussion. I am sure (as you can see from some of the other posts) that some people would get annoyed if their reply is the only one that was of any 'quality' and the discussion stays unresolved. Not necessarily if THEY are chosen as best response but rather just that no one has been chosen at all.
16 Feb 07
Personally no. I don't see the point in being bothered over something like this. With hard work you'll gain decent responses and those who add to a discussion either short or long to me it doesn't matter there for i don't get annoyed. I've really got better things to do with my time, but those who are bothered i do see why. Kudos. ~Joey

Thanks for your honesty! I am sure some people don't care, others who don't go back and look at posts they replied to and others who do care and do go back and check posts.

Definitely. I didn't make it clear in my original post that I meant if no one has made any new replies in over a week and the discussion never gets resolved.

yes it annoys me and I have waited on some topics and it has been six or more weeks and no futher response. Mylot takes away points though if you don't give best response mark after awhile. I contacted and asked them about this and if you wait too long to choose a best response then you lose points.
