I suppose people in general read less than they did earlier. Teens especially. They say here in Israel youngies read very little in comparison with other countries. How the things are going on in your country? What about your children-teenagers? Please share your opinion.

Years back, they used to read alot. I remember when I was youunger. I had so many books. I loved to read. Now days I hardly ever see any kids reading. I think its because the schools are starting to give them more assignments on the computers. It's a shme though because I don't think they know what they are missing.

I've had a large library, about 1000 books or so, but they're all left in Russia... Thank you for your response. :)

its not like that in india..still teenagers read much here...i think a great reason for that is the great competition in india in everything .You have to compete the others to get good job,get good schools and just like that..if you want to have a good jb then you have to face a competition which is never easy...so its natural that teenagers will read more and more to be there in the competitive market......

Thank you for your response. It's funny, but I've always thought that in Western countries, in the US especially, there is a great competition in everything... Logically, people and teenagers in particular should read much...

Here in Brazil reading is shrinking every year. Teens do not like to read and seen to be proud of it. Altough it is not a general rule (there are always exceptions) it is how things are going here. People don't like to read, teens and children do not receive any incentive to read. Sad.

Sad. :( You see, I've got answers from all over the world, and everywhere there's a similar tendency. Sad. :(

Uh..well I am a teenager. And I read alot. It's really hard to say that all teenagers in this country all read or don't..a nice amount do, and some don't. Here America we tend to be people of extremes with a few inbetweens. Kids usualy either read alot or none at all. And some an average amount and others just a little.

My daughter isn't a teenager yet, but she loves to read. Every month her school sends home a reading calander and you have to write in the minutes that they've read each day. When they et to 300 minutes in a month they get little prizes. At first she had to be reminded to read and I think she only did it for the prizes but then as she got into second grade this year she reads all the time. She likes to read in the car or if she stays inside at night and really likes to read before bed. Sometimes I have to scold her because she tries to stay up after her bed time to sneak some reading in, lol. I hope she continues to enjoy reading as she gets older like she enjoys it now.

It reminded me of the following: when I was in US more than 10 years ago I visited a family which stroke me a lot: there the father told me he was fond of reading Russian authors like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, and his son was fond of reading too, so that his parents scolded with him and hid his books because he didn't want to do his homework. :)

Well I think for the most part - you are correct because most of my kids friends definitely don't read anywhere near as much as my kids do!!! Both our boys are so into reading that they easily run out of books from their schools so we go to the library regularly so they can get more books!!! I think it's awesome to see them reading so much!!! And I think it has really kept them doing well in school!!!

I fully agree with you, I'd be happy to see my kids reading as it develops children a lot, make them broad-minded persons and help at school studies after all. Thank you!

Sometimes I wonder if people, especially teens, in this country know HOW to read, today!! Even in the USA. I'm amazed at the number of people on MyLot, for example, who were born in English speaking countries, who barely know how to speak English! It's downright shocking.

My Country is India .Here teens read only those books which are there in study Course . Very few read other books. This might be due to say tough vocablary used by English foregin Authors . One more thing one must note is that books are very costly here foregin or National . This also hampers the reading habits of the teens.Hope My reply is upto mark . By the way if you have any queries do write to me .

From what I see, in America, kids hate to read. They'd rather im each other on the internet, text message on their phones, and do anything that doesn't involve books. I blame part of that on the books that teachers force kids to read. They're not good, and kids don't enjoy things that aren't fun.

With the advent of text messaging, myspace, and other popular technological forms of entertainment, it's almost surprising when I come across a kid who still reads. My sister used to read (she's 15) but now she spends almost 100% of her free time on the computer on myspace. It's sad, really, because myspace isn't all that interesting or fulfilling, and you can't learn much from it. I think teens are getting the short end of the deal.
