The recession will turn out to be a full on depression--Japanese Lost Decade style, only I imagine we'll lose a lot more than a decade.
Until we get fiscal responsibility among our elected officials, no repeat no earmark/porkbarrel spending, and an end to fraudulent spending will we be able to recover from this mess. |

Rush and Newt are big on "third party candidates only elect their opposites." In other words, anyone who votes for a third party is ensuring that the democrat will win.
I disagree with this wholeheartedly. People should vote for the candidate who represents their interests. If 50% vote for the democrat, 25% vote for Scozzafava, and 25% vote for Hoffman, even though the democrat will win, it... |

Right now we have limited capitalism. There are several socialist programs, like the USPS, Amtrak; and several pseudo monopolies that the government allows--like health insurance (you can't buy it across state-lines).
The government interferes with and runs certain sections of the economy, and the government runs it poorly. The USPS and Amtrak haven't made a profit in living memory. If you'... |

If it were up to me, there'd be no visitation rights whatsoever. He has proved by his own actions that he has no interest in being a father--a good one or not.
Right now, he's being played and he doesn't know it. I don't know if it's Marx or who, but there's a phrase for people like him: useful idiot.
He's an idiot, because he doesn't realize that whatever dignity he may have once had h... |

Everyone makes mistakes from time to time. It happens. But some blunders are so%^&(*&*%^% heinous, it's unbelievable.
The stimulus plan was a big one. Not staying in Germany after WWI was a big one too. The fairness doctrine was pretty stupid. Chattel slavery--it was a bad idea. Social security seems like it's not going to work. All of these were pretty boneheaded moves.
The biggest on... |

Ad hominem attacks never help. Attack the arguments, not the arguer.
That being said:
War is not entered lightly. Most people pursue all possible peaceful avenues of conflict resolution before committing armed troops to combat. For most enemies lately, they don't care about economic sanctions. They don't care about censure. Our enemies lately are ideological. They reason they hate us is bec... |

The problem with a straight precious metal currency is that it's impractical. Paper money is easy to carry around. With gold currency, everything would have to be coins, and those are heavy and cumbersome in large quantities.
Fiat money (what we have now) is fine, as long as the people who control the printing press are responsible. We haven't had responsible politicians since the 18th centu... |

@ Taskr:
Yes. The party name shouldn't matter. The candidates ideals, values, and beliefs are what matters. If the Republican name no longer represents the base, then find someone who does. I applaud Palin, Thompson et al for endorsing the third party. |

There isn't a country with full capitalism. Politicians love power and money far too much to allow it.
And it wasn't the free market in the mortgage industry that caused the crash. It was government involvement. The government required lenders to make risky loans, banks couldn't recover the money, and the economy tanked. In a free market, banks probably wouldn't have made so many risky loans. |
