The recession will turn out to be a full on depression--Japanese Lost Decade style, only I imagine we'll lose a lot more than a decade. Until we get fiscal responsibility among our elected officials, no repeat no earmark/porkbarrel spending, and an end to fraudulent spending will we be able to recover from this mess.

@ Taskr: Yes. The party name shouldn't matter. The candidates ideals, values, and beliefs are what matters. If the Republican name no longer represents the base, then find someone who does. I applaud Palin, Thompson et al for endorsing the third party.

There isn't a country with full capitalism. Politicians love power and money far too much to allow it. And it wasn't the free market in the mortgage industry that caused the crash. It was government involvement. The government required lenders to make risky loans, banks couldn't recover the money, and the economy tanked. In a free market, banks probably wouldn't have made so many risky loans.
