Saving money with coupons

I went to the store with my friend today. At the end of the trip when she checked out, I was amazed to see $58 taken off her total grocery bill, just from using coupons and purchasing what was on sale. I need some ideas on how to get organized. I'd love to be able to save this much each week! I have 3 teenagers in my house, plus drop-ins that seem to "Appear" at dinner time. What has worked for you? I saw a lady today with a trapper keeper with baseball card pockets on the inside. All her coupons were organized neatly. I was so jealous@!

To save more money, I also buy things like meat or dry pasta in bulk. When I get home, I divide it into smaller dinner-size sections and pack it into the ziploc freezer bags that I got free (because I used the sales and coupons to bring the price down). Then I freeze the meat. This will give you a giggle: I have about 100 bars body soap bars in one of my cabinets and my husband threw a fit when he discovered 30 boxes of cereal in a closet. But now he knows why we never run out. We have enough shampoo and conditioner for a family of 4 for at least 1 year if I don't get any more.

That is funny. I wish I could get that far ahead. That way on weeks when Money is tight, I'd not have to worry about if we have enough to eat all that week.

Lol that made me giggle! I can just imagine a grown mans face when he opens up a cupboard and finds 30 cereal boxes! If it had of been me when i was a kid, id of thought all my christmas's had come at once! You seem very organised! Wish i could find some motivation to organise myself!

I used to save alot of money on grocerys with coupons and rebates but now I shop at ALDI's and I save more money than I could with coupons anywhere else. They do not accept coupons but the prices are the cheapest of anywhere and we love the food. The thing about using coupons is that you have to purchase the brand named foods and if you collect sale flyers from all the grocery stores in your area and match the coupons with the sale price. Make a list for each store and clip the coupons to the list. Then make one trip to do all your shopping at the stores you will save. If you jsut purchase the product using a coupon, more times than not, you could have saved more money by just purchaseing a different brand. The key is the total grocery price not how much you saved with coupons. Does that make sense. There are sites online where you can print off coupons for your grocerys but some stores no longer accept them. Check to see that the stores that you shop at will accept them and if they do you can save big bucks with computer coupons. Are you a member of freeride? If you are then you get 4 points each time you print of coupons. So you are not only saving with the coupon but you are making points to earn free gift certificates. If you are not a member, send me your email address adn I will invite you so I can get some points too. Are you a member of clubmom? I purchase gift cerfificates from clubmom for stores that I will be shopping at. I get points for purchaing hte gift certificates and they are applied immediately. I use the points to get more gift certificates for free. Now they do charge a small feee for shipping charges so I watch and purchase my gift certificates when they are running a free shipping deal which is quite frequently. The gift certificates arrive in about 4-5 dys after you order them. There are many ways to save if you are organized and watch what you do and how you do it. The key is to be organized

I use vouchers and coupons wherever I can but they never seem to take effect. If I can I take advantage of special offers but they don't make a dent :-(

I've been told it's hard to get started, but once you get a system down, it can really save you money. I shop at Krogers, and have a Kroger plus card, and purchase their sales. I love to hand them my card at the end and watch the money come rolling off my total bill.

We don't get that many good coupons around here - a lot of them are for things we don't buy. When we do get good coupons, I used to have a coupon holder, but now I just stick them to the fridge. When my husband goes grocery shopping, I stick them into his wallet with the money. If I used more, I'd probably keep them in a receipt or coupon holder, and organize them by aisle of the grocery store.

I've used coupons for a long time and still keep changing the way I organize them. I've used anything from an index file to one of those long mylon wallets. I used tabbed dividers to sort the coupons so they were easier to find. I think the best I've done on a regular shopping trip is a 42% savings. Of course that included several store specials, clearance items and some really good coupons from coupons.com lol :) I like the comment about the coupon club passing on the coupons they didn't need. That's a great idea! I ALWAYS save the coupons with no expiration date, no matter what it is. You never know when you, or someone you know, might have need of it later.

LOL, actually I didn't spend that much. Since it was at Randall's I don't go overboard, but it's nice to stock up on $50 worth of meats and veggies for around $20, lol. They will often have a 10/$10 sale & I get salads and fresh veggies much cheaper than their normal prices. :)

i do not use coupons that often when i am doing my groceries but i definitely look for sale items and manage to save quite a bit of money from there... to be organised, just prepare everything from home... shopping list and coupons... so you will be prepared and you know what you are going to buy and how much discount you are going to get... that is what i always do...

I also find that making menus for the week, even if you don't necessarily cook that meal on that particular day, helps with planning and shopping.

I only use coupons for cleaning suppliers. I purchase the Sunday Newspaper, and clip all the cleaning supply coupon. I have a cheap organizer that I obtain from the dollar store. I organize my products by expiration date. I try to use my coupons when the product is on sale. I purchase a lot of my food from Aldis. You can't beat their prices.

I have two rubbermaid boxes that I put in the seat of the cart. I pack in my calculator and my bag of bags with my returnable soda pop bottles/cans. One rubbermaid box is all food coupons and the other is all non-food coupons. I have sections divided with the same type of cards I use in my recipe boxes. The dividers are labeled like: Dairy, butter, canned meat, canned vegetables, soup, Boxed helpers and non-food is: body soap, nylons, laundry products, paper products, plastic lunch bags (ziploc), etc. You have to organize yours so you understand it and can find things fast. Approach grocery shopping as a hunting trip. You are hunting free or near free items and your weapons are your coupons and knowledge. The stores I go to double coupons and will pay me a little to reuse my bags. I cash the bottles/cans in and take that off the total grocery bill. I look for products that are on sale and I have coupon for. Here is an example: Product on sale for $1.99, have coupon for $1.00, store doubles coupon up to $2.00 = I get product free. Non-foods I have to pay the tax so the product costs me .12 cents. I use my calculator to keep track of what I have IN the cart. I set a limit. If my limit is $50.00, when I reach that limit, then I am done. I don't hesitate. I check out immediately and put everything else on the next shopping list. I always get the priority items first. On a good hunting trip, I can bring home about $250.00 worth of stuff but only have to pay cash for about 30% of it. I only pay full price for things like milk and with teenagers in the house, we have a lot of cereal that they eat for snacks instead of potato chips. Oh and by the way, I made my own dividers out of the cardboard cereal boxes. Yes, I know I am cheap but I have an average savings of about 60% to 70% on each and every trip. One more tip: Take your coupons on EVERY trip to the store and that includes the short trips when you are planning on running in only to get milk. Have you noticed that the dairy section is always at the back of the store??? That is because between the dairy section and the cash register is always something you will see that you need or want. Impulsive buying will kill your budget unless you are prepared and have your coupons on you.

One more thing for those people using food stamps, this method will stretch your food stamps greatly. Been there and done that so I know first hand.

My friend got a binder and has them all labeled, and put into baseball card holders that fit into the 3-ring binder. She only takes it out of her car once a week to line up sales, and pull out those that are expired.

I always use coupons. To me it's free money. Every Sunday I sit down with the newspapers and cut out my coupons. I might not use them right away, but I will. I also try to shop the sales at the grocery stores. You can save a lot that way too. You just have to set your mind to it. It does work.

I love to use coupons! I have a great organizer that I got at Walmart, and it holds them all in different catagories. I normally cut mine first thing Sunday mornings, and put them away right away. I find that if I procrastinate it, it just becomes harder for me to get it done. But I do find that I save quite a bit each week w/the coupons. The two stores I shop most double & sometimes triple coupons, which adds up to even bigger savings! Good luck, you can do it!

We only have one store that doubles coupons, and that's like two days a week. I don't usually shop on those days, but if I can get the coupon thing started, I might change my shopping days.

I carry a coupon wallet with me that is divided into several sections for various types of products. I keep the coupons sorted within the sections according to expiration dates. This way I just have to remember to go through my wallet and check for items that I will need soon and to check often to make sure what coupons are getting close to expiration date so that I do not waste them.

I have done that too, so many times that I could not count them all. That is why I started carrying the coupon wallet. It makes things much easier. I still end up missing out because I still end up with some of them left at home that didn't end up in the wallet, but at least I have more of them with me when I need them.

I need to get mine in the car and leave it there unless I'm putting in new coupons. I always get to the store and think, Man, I don't have my coupons with me, and that's on sale, and I have one for that item in my book.

Coupons can be wonderful and certainly if you shop in a store where you get double coupon values, then it's even better. The problem though with coupons is that sometimes you end up buying stuff you really don't need, but buy it anyway because you had a coupon for it. You might be saving yourself money, or you might be spending unnecessarily. I do like the store coupons I get after I check out. The coupons match what I already buy and I often get great deals on items I use regularly.

If it's something that I think I will use in the future, I will go ahead and buy it, rather than losing the coupon. I try and do that only when the coupon is going to expire if I don't use it.
