I'm tired of hum drum, plain ol' brownies! What do you do to your brownies to create something delicious and different?

Well I'd make a suggestion from by blog, but it will probably put this topic in mature content, if your curious take a look at my website link on my profile and in there is some links to Cooking with Mary Jane, that will tell you one interesting way to spice up brownies LOL.... But assuming you are not really looking for that hunks of fudge in the brownies are always a pleasant surprise :D, thought it tends to make the brownies considerably richer.

Ok, I was going to suggest chocolate chips and fudge pieces but others have beaten me to it! How about adding mini marshmallows? You could top the brownies with chocolate frosting with lots of mini marshmallows packed on top. Or, as we are coming up to Easter, decoarting them with mini chocolate eggs?

OMG.. I love the mini chocolate eggs idea! I'm going to go get a packet of Cadbury Mini Eggs and chop them up a bit. Not only is it awesome chocolate but it will be so festive looking!!!!! GREAT idea! I'm so glad I asked this... except now I have so many great ideas I have to make a couple batches! LOL

I made chilli chocolate brownies once, I used hazlenuts, very good quality dark chocolate and just enough dried chilli flakes to give a real kick but still be pleasant. It really brought out the flavour of all the other ingredients and everyone loved them. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Oh wow... you know I HAVE heard that adding spice to chocolate, literally, does bring out a richer chocolate flavor! Mexicans always use chili powder or cinnamon in their chocolate! Great tip! Thanks!

Similar to nancygibson's chili brownies. I've made "mexican chocolate" brownies. To make these you can use any boxed brownie mix....if you are a "make from scratch" kinda person, by all means, do that too, I'm just lazy and use boxed mixes. To the brownie base add cinnamon and a bit of cayanne. I usually just add to taste. My boyfriend likes spicier stuff, so his have more cayanne. Bake as usual. These have a really nice and different taste. The hot pepper really bring out out the chocolate. It soulds a little werid but these really are great.

I highly reccommend trying the spicy chocolate. The first time I did, I was amazed. It gets spicy, but then the sweetness in the chocolate cools you right back down. yummy!

Strawberries and chocolate are great together. After your brownies cool, spread some strawberry jam on them instead of chocolate frosting. Yummy!

Great idea... using a jam or jelly as a frosting instead of regular ol' frosting! See, this is why I asked! LOL

Bake your brownies as regular ( you can add choc chips if wanted). Once out of oven, put in frig until firm. Take out of frig and spread peanut butter on top of brownies. Put back in frig until peanut butter is hard. Then frost with choc frosting....yummy!!

I was just thinking of this one today. It has been quite sometime since I last had apple brownies. A friend of mine made them all the time. They are spicy, sweet and moist.

One time in high school I dropped a full box of laxative into a brownie mix we were making in home Economics class, that really spiced up the brownies a lot, we invited a few teachers to that dinner and they just loved the brownies, until about an hour afterwards when the laxatives kicked in.....man that was funny...I see those teachers today and they are still angry at me for doing that.

Make a mixture of one small package of cream cheese beaten with one egg, half a cup of sugar, and enough flour to make a thick creamy mixture. Swirl it through your brownie mixture to marble and bake as usual. _______________________ My friend adds chocolate chips to her brownies and frosts them with fudge frosting. I suppose you can add any kind of chips and frosting you want. _______________________ Add a 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the batter. ________________________ Sprinkle chopped peanuts into the batter instead of walnuts. ________________________ Sprinkle mini marshmallows into the batter. ________________________ Sprinkle m & m's into the batter.

Have you tried brownie cheesecake? You bake the brownies according to the package directions, cook until it settles, but isn't cooked all the way through and add your cheesecake to the top. Mix melted chocolate chips to make a swirl. Bake and cool. Oh, so yummy! You can also add chocolate, peanut butter, or butterscotch chips to add some flavor. I also really, really, really love peanut butter mixed in. Something about chocolate and peanut butter and you can't go wrong!

I like to make healthy versions with whole wheat flour and applesauce/pureed fruit in place of some of the oil/shortening.

My mother in law usues cream cheese in her brownies. Just add one package to a batch and stirr it in. You can mix all the way or just swirl it in which makes a pretty and colorful browie. I love them fixed this way. Awesome flavor and they are different!

Now I am not suggesting this so please dont jump on me. Quite a few years ago in the US Army office I worked at in Germany someone brought in homemade brownies. The local German employees were not familiar with American brownies so they all wanted to try them and they loved them and everyone present. They were "spiced" with maryjane (weed, pot). I don't know if they were ever told what made them such mellow people with not a thought of work in their heads. LOL

I haven't made brownies in years but had thought at one time to add some M&M's to the mixture or put some on top of batter before baking. Don't know how it would turn out but I think I'll try it one day with, CJ.
