NY is considering a tax on pet food |
|
I was just reading this article about how New York is thinking of putting a tax on pet food and supplies. They say this will go towards helping animal shelters and things like that. I think it is great that they want to raise money for that but how can we be sure the money will go there. Plus I don't really think it is fair because we are already taxed enough. You can read the article here.......

1. easy888 (4305) | 3 years ago | Oh,sorry to hear that especially for those pet lovers,if we can be sure the government will spend the money there, it is a good news, but no one know how the government will use the funds for, moreover,I think people already need to pay high tax rate in the US, it will further increase the burden,it may be even a sad news if someone cannot afford to pay the tax and have to give up their pets, then many pets may lost their owners and they may have no home,so where will the pets go if they have no one to keep them?

3. kgwat70 (10106) | 3 years ago | I was shocked to hear that NY is considering putting a tax on pet food. I think that is horrible and that they can find other ways to make money for shelters. Putting a tax on pet food might prevent people from getting pets in the first place which would mean more shelters would be needed. I do not think it is right for them to tax pet food. Yes, everyone there is definitely taxed enough. It would be disappointing if they passed legislation to tax pet food.

4. ElusiveButterfly (9457) | 3 years ago | Unfortunately they will tax where they see fit. The taxing should be put on items that really are of no health benefits, such as items related to smoking, beverages that have no nutritional value, etc. I believe that by doing this the states could raise more revenue and also help deter people from using such products. But, then again, who knows.

5. nicolec (1646) | 3 years ago | At first I wasn't sure what to make of it. Then I read the article which states a 3% tax on supplies, it doesn't mention food. Pets are expensive to have. I love my cats but there is no doubt I spend a lot of money on them just on food and litter. And I thought 3% is kind of high. BUt then I did the math. If I buy a squeaky toy for my cat that's really only another 6 cents, or a few posts on mylot!
But I think it can be a good thing. Pet shelters are being over crowded. For many reasons and I think they should get all the help they can.

6. villageanne (5888) | 3 years ago | Tax Tax Tax, I am just taxed to death. Why dont they just let us have our paycheck and let us decide how it should be spent instead of paying more taxes so the government can decide what to do with our money. I am really upset with the government right now. They are giving our money to people to purchase things that we cant afford because the government takes our money. Just call me hateful today. I am not in a good mood. LOL

8. KrisNY (7347) | 3 years ago | Wow-- so taxing more because you have a pet?? This is absurd! Only in NY-- I can see taxing alcohol, cigarettes-- that sort of thing-- but pet supplies.. I think this will just make us NY pet owners feed our animals more people food- scraps.. This can't be good. Those people with alot of pets might not be able to afford the supplies and food with the new tax hikes-- And then add to the shelters by leaving pets or dropping them off. Bad choice NY!

9. thowell (2771) | 3 years ago | I have mixed feelings about this, yes, it is a good idea if it will put an end to all the homeless animals being put to sleep, but then again, that is what they have fund raisers for.
Then again, we have to add in there all the pet food recalls, ok, the owners have enough to deal with money wise taking the pets to the vets and paying out the rear because a company made our pet sick. Maybe the money should go toward vet bills.
lol oh no, I think I better shut up now, before I get myself in trouble, I do hope you understand a little about how I feel Brendalee. Way to much stuff going on now to even consider it I think.

| 10. miyuna (46) | 3 years ago | I think it is a good idea, in theory, to help raise money for animal shelters, but in the form of a tax on pet food it isn't such a good idea, I don't think. Pet food is an expensive product already, and like you said, it's not guaranteed to go to the animal shelters.
