I know a lot of folks here have cats, and maybe this isn't a question to ask cat owners..but who knows..Are you superstitious about black cats and why? Did you know that in Ancient Egypt not only were cats worshipped, since there was the feline goddess Bast, it was also a crime to even accidently kill a cat and one was put to death for the crime...but...the most sacred of all cats was...you can guess..yes...the black cat...Interesting how times and opinions have changed..no?

balck kitten - black kitten at play
I have second black cat in my life. I am not superstitious about black cats...however...it is funny story behind getting my kitten. It was back in October when I was visiting my friends in NY. During card reading I get card "learn independence form your female cat". I start laughing. I didn't have cat and I was not planning to have one. One week later someone told me about abandoned female kitten... To make story short...after I decided to keep this kitten...many strange things happened....mostly bad...some people may relate it to black cat...one thing is for sure…card reading was accurate…I get lot of independence… I love my black kitten….:)

It IS very interesting how times change! :) I wonder where the superstition came from. I know I could probably find the answer online somewhere. Heck, there is so much that one can find online now days. ha ha But I guess that is another thing that I have never gotten around to doing. Gotta find that Round Tuit! No, I do not have a superstition to black cats. Personally, I usually think what people claim to be bad luck, are actually good luck. ha ha Friday the 13th are normally very good days for me! A black cat is very beautiful and if it crosses my path, that means I get to pet it. :)

I love black cats! I think they're so beautiful. But then again I'm no superstitious much at all. I try to ignore them although a few are still brainwashed in my head. When I went to get my first cat from the pound I was hoping for a black cat first, a grey cat second, or a calico. I didn't find a black one but there were several greys and calicos. But in the end Leo (my grey tabby) choose us :)

Leo...amazing how some of the cats we get in our life from a shelter choose us...isn't it..I meant to add in my list of names above of the black cats I have had in the past...E.T....had two actually...the first when the movie first came out, then he went to the land of Bast..a little later another kitten came into my life..the markings were so identical to be eerie, as she did have a bit of white on her, in all the exact same places as the first E.T.!

It seems that the Americas have more problems with black cats than the rest of the world (something I hope we don't export.) Am I superstitious about black cats - well, right now I have 4.

That is interesting how opinions change. I have never believed black cats are bad luck. I wonder, though, how black cats came to be thought of as connected to witches. Is that in history somewhere?

I think since the color of black for some reason has always been associated with darkness and evil...so I guess it was just natural that black cats were associated with witches who were also considered evil--silly when you think of it...so many people habitually wear black clothing...so I guess they're evil too huh? LOL,Gee maybe will have bad luck if a person with black clothes crosses your path...LOL--can you imagine if a superstition like that started..my goodness then..we would have bad luck all day!!!

I am far from being superstitious. My house happens to be home to 3 pure black cats. They are the best pets that I have ever had the pleasure of having. My cats have brought me nothing but good luck.

My cat Little One - My cat laying in his favorite place, my laundry basket.
I am not superstitious about black cats. I have several of them in my house. I knew about them being worshipped in ancient Egypt. And my boyfriend would probably tell you that I worship them now.lol. Here is a pic of one of my black cats.

I am most definitely not superstitious when it comes to black cats. My oldest "daughter" will be 14 this June - all black, beautiful gold eyes. While she found her own way into my life when she was only 6 weeks old, I am drawn to the all black cats whenever I see a litter of kittens. Mainly because I know how some are superstitious (and some downright hateful) towards them. Makes me want to adopt them all! While I know the history, there is something I do not know that I am very interested in. When did the tide turn against cats? Who initiated it?

Unfortunately the early Christian church did...--and a real horror story I read, was that the common practice on Shrove Tuesday in many European countries during the 1500s to the 1700s, was to gather all the cats, not just black ones, put them and seal them into baskets, take them to the center of the village, light a bonfire, and..well I think you can guess the rest --and why this was done on Shrove Tuesday I haven't a clue.

I did know about the ancient Egyptian laws and worship. Times have indeed changed. I wonder how the modern Egyptians treat cats? I have cats and have had many black cats over the years. They have brough me nothing but happiness in life and sorrow in their passing.

I think I'm about 50% superstitious..Some times i wonder where the correlation between superstition and habit comes in. Where you start off doing soemthing because of superstition and then continue out of habit. My friend will say"Superstition is born from insecurity and the need to be in control of cause-and-effect."rolling my eyes...but being not so smart like him i will put him to go out from our house just with right leg...lol,and he is not so curageous to make another way while i am near him...lol As about black cats..i will have one for be sure i don't have any problem... augusta

Yes, I wonder where superstitions begin too...I think a lot can be just pure ignorance or something that just triggers the fear factor...

A black cat is a black cat, no more and no less. I had a black cat for a long time and his name was midnight, he was very attached to me, used to spend his time wrapped around my neck...my friends and family called him my fur collar. I had him declawed because he was an indoor cat. He used to get mad if he wanted attention and I was otherwise engaged. I used to do jigsaw puzzles on my dining room table, and if I didn't pay attention to him he would quite literally throw the pieces at me. With no claws he could spread his paw and pick up individual pieces...lol. I am thinking that back when the cats were sacred they were bigger than out current domestic variety.
