Who is your favorite author? |

Mine is Terry Pratchett. He's written thirty books aimed at people in high school or older, and I think that I've read all of those. The Discworld series is really funny but surprisingly philosophical considering its hilarity.

| Ethan72282 (75) | 4 years ago | I still haven't read a Stephen King book. I don't have nightmares much, and I'm afraid that could change if I start reading his stuff.

pussywillow (433) | 4 years ago | Try "The Green Mile" or "The Stand" or "Dolores Claiborne." Not all of his books are really scarey, although they do go beyond your typical fiction. He's such a great story-teller, that he can make scarey things scarier than anyone else - but his books also usually have a good ending - the monster gets killed or the ghost gets excised, so I always feel safe going to sleep at night. LOL!
| |
|
|
| Ethan72282 (75) | 4 years ago | But they're so long... how can you finish the book before bedtime? I have the Shining at home - it's not mine - that's one of the scarier ones, right?
| |
|
|
pussywillow (433) | 4 years ago | You know, that wasn't one of the scariest ones for me. "Gerald's Game" scared the bejesus out of me - and "Desperation" did, too. But "The Shining" is just a regular old ghost story and didn't scare me all that bad. It's also not one of my favorites. But you're right, they are long. I guess if you read them only during the day, maybe you wouldn't have them on your mind when you went to bed at night. But the ones I recommended really are not scary - no ghosts or monsters - well "The Stand" does have a monster - but not a really oogy one. They're just great fiction.

Jellen (892) | 4 years ago | Oh, Ethan, my daughter says one of Stephen King's novels would be a good starter one because it isn't scary and deals with a lot of human issue topics you might find interesting. The book is called Hearts in Atlanatis.

3. manodogs (260) | 4 years ago | Raymond Chandler.
Also HP Lovecraft, Stephen King, Clive Barker, Steinbeck, and Fitzgerald. It's sometimes hard for me to say because a lot of books/novels I've really enjoyed were written by authors who never did another one (though they may have done shorts or other writing), and I've enjoyed books by some authors but never read any of their other works, so I can't say they're a favorite.
| |
| |
|
|
| Ethan72282 (75) | 4 years ago | I haven't read anything by any of them except for a couple of Steinbeck stories for school. I've never been that into 'literary' fiction for some reason - probably from the over exposure and overanalysis of those books in middle and high school.

| Ethan72282 (75) | 4 years ago | Tolkein of course... middle earth is great. Isaac Asimov has a great book of jokes, but I've never really gotten into his fiction, but I have read several books by Orson Scott Card. And yeah, I've read all the Harry Potter books.

pussywillow (433) | 4 years ago | Try Asimov's Foundation series. It's soooo good. There are 4 books in the series.
I used to get some SciFi magazine - I think it was Fantasy & Science Fiction - anyway, he was the editor of the mag and I loved reading his editorials.

| Ethan72282 (75) | 4 years ago | I know what you mean about reading a favorite author over and over again. I've re-read most Terry Pratchett books at least once. Also, right now I'm in the process of re-reading the Lost World by Michael Crichton. I might be able to appreciate it more now than I did when I first read it about 10 years ago.
