What's the earliest TV show you remember watching as a kid?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221) 5 years ago

This is definitely going to date me, since when I was a kid, color TV didn't exist...it was still black and white! Thinking back the shows that I remember watching were...gasp...and don't laugh at some of them...okay?

The Lawrence Welk Show (that was my great-grandmother's one to watch)
The Ed Sullivan Show
The Mickey Mouse Club
American Bandstand

Thats about as exciting as TV got in those days--LOL

So what shows do you remember watching as a kid??

I remember this one particulat tv show called indradhanush (it means rainbow in english). It was a serial about time travel where this kid can go in the past as well as the future. It was very entertainigng for us kids and all of us girls had a huge crush on the kid who played the lead:)

I watched "loony toones" a lot as a kid. My favorite character was bugs, and I was obsessed with it. I also watched "I Love Lucy" with my mom, and I was obsessed with Sailor Moon. I remember saving all of my allowance money to go and buy a Sailor Moon trading card. Seasame Street was another one that I watched.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)  5 years ago

Oh gee...you know I forgot to ad "I Love Lucy"--a classic--I watched Looney Tunes too..was more of a Tom and Jerry fan though

myLot reputation of 80/100. wdkptr (487)  5 years ago

Lucy, ah.. I still love to watch ILL tho, so it hardly counts lol.. and I liked Taz..as for Sailor Moon I had to wait until I got great neices until I got to do the little girl stuff.. sigh, only boys at home.. only Care Bears and Ninja Turtles,no barbies, no tea sets (pout), so now my greatneices get double lol..

How about The Outer Limits??

myLot reputation of 97/100. BarBaraPrz (6650)  5 years ago

I remember Emergency being extremely popular in its day. One time, I had been doing laundry and went down to get it out of the dryer just before the show started... I lived in a third-floor walk-up, 4 apts. to a floor... and I heard that opening siren coming from every apartment on every floor!

I remembered fighting over the remote control for the shows to watch with my two older brothers. Of course, they always won. I ended up watching Voltes V for many years. We were allowed to watch after doing our homework. Its a Japanese show that's full of actions and dramas.

PMSL yup the first time I ever saw television it was on a huge box like object with a tiny little fuzzy black and white screen and the programme was a puppet show called "Muffin the Mule". My Mum used to take me for a long walk over to my Gran's house so I could watch it, as it was something of a novelty back then.

I remember:
My Mother The Car
77 Sunset Strip
The Green Hornet
The Soupy Sales Show
Bozo The Clown
RomperRoom
Ed Sillivan with the little Italian mouse Topojijo
Wow, your post really brought me back many years ago, thanks for that!

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)  5 years ago

OMG--I remember Bozo the Clown, and especially Soupy Sales--I actually met Soupy Sales once and have an autographed picture of him--remember White Fang?? LOL--oh and how about Shari Lewis and Lamp Chop?

myLot reputation of 97/100. howard96h (5692)  5 years ago

You really met Soupy Sales and have a autographed picture of him, that is nice. As for Shari Lewis, my mother hated when me and my sister would watch that show because we would ruin a lot of our socks trying to make a Lamb Chop. Hahahaha

myLot reputation of 80/100. wdkptr (487)  5 years ago

oh, my we are all watching the same shows lol.. I loved Green Hornet. I was always a big sci fi fan, movies and shows.. I was a huge Star Trek fan from day one. At that time where we lived it aired opposite Batman (remember, Adam West?). My brother and sister watched it. We fought so badly every Wed. at 8PM that 'Santa' brought me a teeny tiny b&w set for my bedroom so I could watch ST and my folks could have peace. I was no fool and outnumbered 4 to 1. I rarely won the wed. nite vote (1 week in 5 I got to watch ST), so I settled for the b&w..

myLot reputation of 97/100. howard96h (5692)  5 years ago

Yes I remember Batman & Robin. We can't forget Perry Mason and what about Hazel. LOL My favorite was the Abbott and Costello shows, I think they had them on Sunday mornings with the Andrew Sisters. Back then the whole family sat in front of a B&W tv set that had awful reception (you had to get that antenna just right) and as ofr a remote control - HA! we had to get up to change the channel and adjust the volume. The kids today don't know how good they have it. I recently saw on cable the Little Rascals, boy did it bring back memories.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)  5 years ago

I know people don't know how good they have it with that remote now...LOL...in the "old" days you had to get your butt off the sofa or chair to switch channels...--and oh, yes, I remember the ordeal of those rabbit ears...had to get it just right
and yup really did meet Soupy Sales..gee, how old is that guy now????

myLot reputation of 97/100. howard96h (5692)  5 years ago

Soupy Sales (born Milton Supman on January 8, 1926) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soupy_Sales - Bio and a few pics of him.

Dated?? Hah, you are too young lol.. I watched all these, Lawrence was my grandma's (not great, so nyah, I am older) fave.. and I watched Bozo the Clown. I was even ON Bozo, my mom took me LOL.. oh, and I well remember watching the moon landing LIVE.. and the first color Bonanza eposiode (a big deal one of the first color series). Had to watch it in town, most of us didn't have color sets then.. and the original first time run pilot for Star Trek (pre-Kirk, what is now known as the episode "The Menagerie".. but by then I was old, all of 9.. and we had a local show called Homer Briarhopper's something-or-other (yep, his real name)..oh, oh and Peggy Mann (a local Martha Stewart of the day).. they were filmed at a university about 20 miles from home).. rofl.. such memories, great discussion..

myLot reputation of 99/100. sumofalltears (2673)  5 years ago

I am a major Trek fan too and have many trek things, and all the episodes and movies too. My kids buy me Trek suff for Christmas. I used to watch Lost in Space too.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)  5 years ago

Hehehe..me?? Young? Well yes young at heart anyway..and Star Trek...I used to know a REAL die-hard Trekkie...he could recite word for word the dialogue of all 78 of the original series--name an episode say "Trouble with Tribbles" and he'd be off ....

I didn't watch Lawrence Welk - I'd go do something else. Did watch Ed Sullivan, we didn't get Mickey Mouse Club here in the back waters. I remember watching Red Skelton, American Playhouse, but mostly I remember Fury, Sky King, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Mighty Mouse, Uncle Jay (a local kids program that had birthday kids on it & showed cartoons.)

myLot reputation of 80/100. wdkptr (487)  5 years ago

Roy and Dale, oh, a favorite at our house, we had some of their kiddie records.. and I still love Red Skelton and Mighty Mouse..

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)  5 years ago

Oh yes..remember Red Skelton...my this is a real trip down memory lane isn't it?? LOL Remember when Ed Sullivan had The Beatles on???

myLot reputation of 99/100. ElicBxn (24672)  5 years ago

Oh well I remember - I was in 11 or 12 when they were on. Thinking back, I think the earliest TV I really remember watching - because repetition has always been my best memory tool - was Dave Garaway on the Today show - in the mornings while we were getting ready to see Dad off to work.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)  5 years ago

Oops--who is Dave Garroway??? Don't remember him

myLot reputation of 99/100. ElicBxn (24672)  5 years ago

He was one of the early hosts on the Today show - here's his obit.

Lets see, I remember the mickey mouse club, My mom used to watch Jack Lalaine, Dragnet, Leave it to beaver and a few others that escape me at the moment. I can remember being at the baby sitters watching The Smothers Brothers but I think that was a bit later. I remember our first tv was a black and white also with the rounded picture and when it didnt work right Dad would take all the tubes out and take them to the nearest stores test machine to see which one is burned out. Ahhh the good old days. Take care, Terry.
