Plus Size Models |

| 50%, give or take a few, of American women are size 14 and bigger according to an article that I read. One store in Britain used a 5’8” size 12 model to promote their 2007 swimwear collection. They said they wanted someone who looked like an every day average woman. In 2006 Gaultier used a size 20 model in his fashion show in Paris. He was making a point that big is beautiful. Here is the model he used. http://img.dailymail.co.u... More larger women than ever are becoming models. I think that it's fantastic that more plus size women are being used in advertising. Did you know that Seventeen Magazine readers chose a size 12 model as their representative. The girl beat out 11,000 applicants. Do you think advertisers should start using women who are a size 12 and above to promote their clothing? | | | | | |

| | I think if they did it would help many young girls that think they have to be a "Twiggy." Too many of them make themselves sick trying to be as thin as they possibly can. PEACE | | | | | | |

| | I think that would be a great idea. As you stated 50% are size 14 and above. It is about time that they are represented. | | | | | | |

| | I do think that using more average models would be more appropriate. Most of the models today are a size 1 or 2 and this brings the wrong message to young teenage girls. I can remember hearing my girls say they were fat and were actually a size 3...come on give me a break. This has the wrong effect on teens so I would support using larger models. | | | | | | |

| | I think that it isn't wrong to use plus-size models-- but I think that it is ironic that they have stopped using amaciated models. It's just as unhealthy to be too fat as it is to be too skinny. Perhaps they should only use models size 3- 9, but if they're going to use 200 lb models, they should use the 70 lb models as well. | | | | | | |

| | I still think that weighing 70lbs is deathly looking. And beside that, not all 200lbs women are unhealthy. And, not to be rude, but a plus size girl, some, have good shapes and they look pretty darn sexy. I would rather look at that then a woman with bones showing. | | | |

| | Most of the girls I know are size 3 to 9... Not size 12 and over. What age group are we talking about with these advertisements anyway? Young women, or the 40 and older crowd? If the ads are directed towards older women then yes, size 12 is probably the average. But with young women (teens, 20s, early thirties...) I would say size 8 is average. | | | |

| | My daughter is 5'8 and a size 12. She is often told that she is too thin, yet she is at her ideal weight. I'm not talking the 40 and above age group here. A size three is simply unhealthy. From statistics the average American woman's weight is 163 pounds. The average Canadian woman's weight is 153 pounds. According to the Department for Trade and Industry, the average U.K. woman weighs 147 pounds. Size 12 is the average size of women. | | | |

| | Very well stated Swtrose. I know at 5'8 and due to my bone structure the smallest I could get into was a 12, when the outfit was made right, but most times since I am large boned most shirts I had to go into a 14 or a 16 because I am broad shoulders and this was when I was back in my 20's. Most of the teens I see range between a 9 and a 14, not a 3 to a 9 by any stretch of the imagination. My niece is 12 years old and I see all of her friends and other classmates, most are around a size 12. Also, laisse, if someone is very big boned and tall 200lbs is not that big. However to be 70lbs and look normal they would have to be under 4 feet 6 inches: http://www.healthchecksys... | | | |

| | Well she wears between a size ten and 12. She has to purchase her tops larger and it depends wear you shop too. One store might carry a size 12 that is really a size 9 some where else. lol | | | |

| | Oh yeah got to love that bit. I've had my share of that as well even at the same stores but different manufacturers. In one you might wear a size 14 but another you wear a size 18 and another a 12. Drives me nuts. | | | |

| | I think they should use all different sizes. Not one person is the same size. There is just so many different sizes out there. So I think it is a good idea, because big is just as beautiful. I think it wouldn't hurt to use a mixure of different sizes like size 8, 12, and 20, or bigger. Every body shape is uniqe. :) | | | | | | |

| | I think advertisers should use women of all sizes to promote their clothes, both thin and average girls. It seems using a very overweight model like size 20 is kind of hypocritical though... Being that overweight is unhealthy, just as being extremely thin is unhealthy. Many people complain that using size 1 and 2 models is a bad influence because it promotes anorexia and tells girls it is okay to be deathly thin. But, using a model who is extremely overweight is saying it's okay to be that way too, and that is just as bad for you! Instead of saying 'big is beautiful', girls should be encouraged to be fit and healthy instead of accepting that it is fine to be very overweight and ignoring the health risks. I think anything up to size 14 can be considered physically fit, but using models bigger than this says to me that it is okay to just accept being overweight. I'm sure a lot of women are going to get angry at me for speaking this way but it is still true that being overweight can be very unhealthy, whether it is offensive or not. I just know that once I made the decision to become more active and lose weight, I went from a size 18 to a size 7 and I'm MUCH more healthy and happy now than I was before. | | | | | | |

| | Well, what weight would you say a woman who wears a size 20 is? I'm 5 feet 9 inches and the maximum healthy weight for my height is 170 pounds. If a 5'9" woman wearing a size 20 is over 170 pounds, which I'm rather sure she would be, then she is considered overweight. If a woman who is 5 feet 9 inches weighs more than 203 pounds she is considered obese. If someone is over the highest possible ideal weight for his or her size... then I'm sure most doctors would advise that person to try and lose a bit of weight. That's why doctors have made so many scales as to what the healthy weight range is... being above that weight is not good for you.

| | Just because someone is over 200lbs doesn't mean they are unhealthy. There are women out there that are twice your size, weighing way over 200lbs and are in good condition and are plenty healthy, maybe even healthier then you. | | | |

| | Im 5'6 and i weight more then 200ibs. I wear a size 20 clothing. And I have a uniquely shaped bone sctructure. The case being that my rib cage, not fat but bone is 43 inches around. Meaning by most charts even as a skeleton I will always be plus size. And as to healthy-ness? I excercise an hour at least every other day through bike-riding on, yes and exercise bike. I am not the most physically fit person. By standards I am obese but am healthier then what is considered a norm in that catagory. Also when you consider things such as PCOS (which I do have) and other hormonal syndromes weight will never properly equate. Take for example my mother, she was only skinny in her life when she ate next to nothing and took dangerous diet pills. Which have helped to ruin her metabolism. Even before losing weight she did not eat much. At one point she got a very lean roomate who was shocked to discover she ate more then my heavy-set mother. To all those thinking this is in the past and that I never saw this myself, I have seen my mom live on salad and very healthy, very un-edible looking health foods. Then watched her gain weight simply due to eating a few carbs. She was also a very active woman due to her job which was an interior designer. Unlike most interior designers she herself would do heavy lifting and paint and plaster, which I can attest is actually very active. And yet she never lost weight. I seem to have gotten quite off subject. Regardless my point is this, I do believe we should encourage eveyone to be healthy and fit but people need to learn that a woman who is a size 20 is sometimes as fit as she can be naturally. | | | |

| | I think it's great that they do this. I hate when you look at clothes in a magazine and say "how cute.... on her" You want to see people that look like you wearing the clothes. I hate when you go into a "plus size" store and Twiggy is behind the counter. I think that everyone needs to be represented. Stick thin, average, overweight. I think girls need to know it's ok to be however you are. You don't need to starve yourself to be "normal" I was a size 9-10 in high school and felt like a pig. I look back now and think, "what on God's green earth was I thinking" I was perfect. I have hips, rear end, and a large chest. So any thinner then 9-10 and I would have looked sick. I actually have pics of me with my collar bones sticking out. Way too thin. But I still felt fat. All these people ranting and raving about being overweight, being unhealthy. Yea ok, maybe being overweight isn't ideal for your health. But starving yourself to death is worse. Like I said before, everyone needs to be represented. | | | | | | |

| | yeah models that are like size 8, all the time, it brings bigger people self esteem down i think, im size 16, and i have been offered to model bridal dresses, it made me blush to think that someone would want me to model since my size. i couldnt believe it. it would change so many people and countries etc etc if larger people were to model things. | | | | | | |

| | professorxang, most models are under weight. Underweight models should be banned from runways. Exposure to such models reduces self esteem amongst young women, which may lead to eating disorders. | | | |
