My son wants to always be wet - is this normal?

He is only 2.5. He never wants to get out of the bath or shower, he never gives me a hard time about washing his hands, and he will sit moving water back and forth between two cups for hours. This weekend my husband and I decided we would experiment and let him play until he wanted to stop just to see how long it would hold his attention. We turned the outdoor spigot on to a slow drizzle, gave him a large cup and when it filled up we showed him a flower pot that could use watering. He played this game all by himself for an hour.... a solid hour. Is that normal?? (we finally stopped him or he might still be there)

Does he get upset if you try to stop him from pouring the water back and forth in the cups?

You are so kind for this response. Honestly, in my discussion most people have read more concern when there was actually a lot more humor than concern (my poor writing skills, I assumme). I have some experience working with special needs children and do know some of what you reference here. I have no concern about him being obsessive with his behavior.... he is mostly just 100% little boy.

It might be a stage, but I'd bring it up to your doctor, maybe. You can research self-stimulatory behavior on the net and see if it applies, it's usually associated with autism, but not always by any means (ever met someone who constantly shakes his leg, taps a pencil, etc.??)... there is also childhood OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), which I had when I was about 4 or 5 (I constantly washed my hands and couldn't do anything until I did). Then again, there are just kids who develop weird quirks, so don't let anyone convince you it's something more serious if you know in your heart it's not. I know one boy about your son's age who constantly ran around rubbing women's legs if they wore pantyhose - ANY woman. LOL. His poor mother was beside herself, but he's pretty normal now (at least he isn't doing it in public in his 20s). And people who go on to be outstanding in their field frequently report such obsessions (like Olympic swimmers spending the entire day in the tub as children).

LOL--- I don't see why it isn't normal- Is it something new he just started? Could be something he just enjoys- I'm sure he will get over the attraction and move on to something else... Hope you don't have a high water bill- if you have to pay for your water! : )

I am seriously not really worried about anything as far as my son goes, although it has come off that way in this discussion. My husband and I laugh about it and say to each other that the only concern is whether we can pay the water bill. :)

You have what we call here in my house a Water Baby. It's normal that a child loves water. Remember they lived in water for the first nine months of their lives. My 2 yera old daughter gets mad at me if i take her out of the tub. She would sleep in it if i would let her. LOL it's so funny when kids love water that much. I'm just wondering what your son's birth sign is. If he is a water sign then it's all the worse with him getting out of the water. When i was pragnant for each one of my children i loved the shower and my husband hated it. I would shower two or three times a day. I'm a peices and if your not sure what sign that is it's the one with the two fish facing opsite directions in a circle. All of my children love the water. My 7 month old gets mad at me right now when i take him out of the tub because he loves the water splashing. My 6 year old loves to play in the sink and in the summer time it get's worse. I have to keep the hose shut off down in my basement because if i don't then my 6 year old has the water turned on and playing with the hose all day long. He's a cancer sign. That the crab. They love water as well as land. So enjoy this wet time with your two year old he will have a lot of fun this summer. Get him a little swimming pool and watch what he does.

Are we related? my girl wants to wash the dishes just to play with water. she is 2. its about 15 degrees outside and she went out yesterday and took a little swim in the dogs water bucket. she took a bath for an hour after that. she goes through about 5 sets of clothes a day. its cold out and we cant let her walk around wet. she also bathes all her toys. at one and a half, she could swim without any help. when she waters the plants she always shower herself in the process. i was also worried if it was normal. i guess it is after reading your post.

That's not unusual. Kids are kids, and they just love playing with water for a long time. Your boy is probably a natural born water baby!!

You should have just let him stay out there until he got tired of it. Maybe he just has a thing for water. I remember running out and playing in the rain everytime it rained when I was a kid and even now when people run for shelter I have this urge to relive my childhood. I think it is perfectly normal. At least he is not playing with fire. Not yet anyway...lol

I do not see anything wrong with that at all. Maybe he just likes water and playing with it. I do not think it's anything to worry about.

Really, this is normal. He is learning something while he does this. He may not have the words, but he is formulating what happens when you do this with water, then that, with water. Besides that, he was carried in water the first nine months of his life, before he was born. It must have been a very good place for him, as he still loves it. Now would be a good time to teach him to swim. You guys are fantastic for letting him go with this experience. Very developmentally appropriate.

Good point, of course it is an area of comfort for him. I had not thought about that. Thanks for the nice compliment.

Most children are fascinated by water honey - but not so happy about being kept clean - so lucky old you! lol Now for the bad news though - I had a nephew who sounded a lot like you bubba - but probably more clean conscious, he loved water AND hated to be dirty! Now he is 23 and a fantastic lad apart from one thing his passion in life has nothing to do with his early fascination for water as we all thought it would, rather he is into downhill mountain bike racing and boy does he get filthy! It sounds to me as though your son is a lovely, happy, content little boy and I am sure he is adorable! xxx

He doesn't care so much about being clean, in fact loves to get filthy dirty in the backyard when he plays. It is true, he is very happy and content.... and of course I think he's adorable. Some day when he realizes the water can make really goopy mud I am probably in big trouble.

Love to stay in the water - This photo depicts a little girl who loves to stay in water all the time...she thinks she is part fish...LOL
I think that some children are just naturally comfortable in water...some are afraid of it....the ones who love it seem to really love it... My son would stay in the water all day if I would let him...LOL

Hi makingpots, children at that age get fascinated in everything that is new to them. I think he fascinated by the fact that cups can be filled with water. They enjoy playing water. My son also has a habit to pour water from one cup to another. Worse, he will put anything inside the cup and then drank it. I have to pay extra attention to his activity.

My kid is 4 and he also behaves the same way. I think there is nothing wrong in this. I've also heard other parents say the same thing. So dont worry. But letting them play for long in water is not good for their health.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it, he just likes to play in water. You ought to be happy, a lot of kids can't stand to bathe and he may even end up not having a problem helping you with the dishes!

thats a bit weird never heard of kids wanting to be wet all the time. Only time kids want to be wet is when they want to go swimming yeah so thats a bit weird in my opinion byt hey look on the bright side ou dont have to keep telling them to take a shower since a lot of kids hate to take showers.

This is normal. My boys are already 5 & 6, they still taking long shower, hand-wash or water game. They simply love water, even at the playground. If there is water, prepare them to get wet. This is normal.
