When is too old to have long hair?

I have had long hair all my life! When I was younger I can remember the old women comment here and then on older women with long hair saying; "oh, she is too old to have long hair". Even saying to one of their friends don't you think it is time to cut your hair you are too old for long hair now! Well I am 47. When turned 30 I started to be overly conscious about the fact I had long hair. When I was 40 I cut it to shoulder length. Now I am nearing 50. Should I be cutting my hair shorter or is it okay to leave it shoulder length so I can still wear in back in a barret if I want to? Do you think this hair question is totally ridiculous? If so why?

I've mostly had long hair too, and I'm getting older now. I don't think you should cut it short unless you really want to. Don't worry about what others say or think. I keep mine below my shoulders and have it layered so it doesn't start to look too old fashioned. I have to admit that I really don't care for long hair after it turns gray, but I'll dye my hair for at least another 20 years anyway! Maybe after dying gets to be too much of a bother, I'll cut my hair to shoulder length. Never any shorter though. I think that lots of older women cut their hair short simply because it's easier to maintain.

I have heard people say the same thing I that I am too old to have long hair. However. I disagree with them. My hair is short and in a perm only because my hair was thinning and was hard to take care of . I have an Aunt who is past 60 now and she has long hair. I guess I would like it better if she added some colour to it though. All that gray kind of makes her look older. There are 100's of woman who never cut their hair, and likely it grows down their backs sides. There are some who don't think woman should cut their hair, however they wear it up in a bun . So how you choose to wear you hair is really up to you. you have to decide it it suits you or not . No, this is not a ridiculous question.

Wow, what a tough question. I'm on the other side of it really. I'm a male with long hair in my middle 30's. At what point should I cut my hair? I'd be lying if I didn't admit to thinking about it more and more over the last few years. I had this very conversation with a female co-worker some months back who is in her 50's. She had recently cut her hair very short. She basically told me that, "I will know when it's time to cut my hair." I'm very interested to see what others have to say on this matter.
