Are they fruit trees or ornamentals? Is there one that is your favorite? I got my favorite tree as a seedling, given away free at a Lawn, Home, and Garden Show. My friend and I took our kids. Each child was given a free seedling. I had two, but failed to keep one alive when we moved. This tree is about twenty three years old, it is a blue spruce. I have lots of other trees, some were here, some I planted, some came as volunteers, but that one remains my favorite.

I bought two Apple trees 2 years ago. A Harlared and a Honeycrisp. The first year I was stunned as we got a few apples on the Honeycrisp but none on the Harlared. This year theres close to 1200 Honeycrisp apples and maybe 5 or so Harlareds. I love my apple ttrees.

Call me when the pies are ready. I have had some people tell me that city folk should not plant fruit trees, but I do it anyway. Double duty, shade and food.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 11 out of 1,674 in gardening  5 years ago

Have them come here telling me not to plant fruit trees in the city. I'd shove an apple so far down their loud mouth. HAHAHAHA. J/K

I've planted trees lots of times over the years. With the birth of each grandchild, I plant a tree that is 'their tree', and somehow it starts fostering their love of trees too. I also used to get balled and burlapped Christmas trees every year and plant them. Now I'm into starting shrubs and trees from transplants and multiplying techniques. Last fall I started forsythia, Ibex (holly), and catalpa tree for my daughter & her husbands new house. There's a few trees on our farm here that are huge and were my Dad's and Uncles Christmas trees from when they were young in the 1920's. I have a large woods on the farm that is what's termed 'virgin woods,' meaning that the trees there are extremely old and in their natural state. Sometimes I take seedlings from that area and move them up to the front of the property to grow so that I can enjoy seeing them every day. It's nice that you're showing children the appreciation for trees and for starting & keeping them growing. They are natural defences in the fight against pollution...plus they're just pretty!

I love the thought of your place. I have lots of memories of trees at my homes growing up and at my grandparent's home. I have only owned two homes, but the first thing I always have done is start planting trees and woody shrubs. I have lots of Rose of Sharon (althea). Up and down both sides of my driveway.

GardenGerty, you are doing great with the posts. Glad to see you doing it sugar. I don't grow a darn thing in this desert that I live in. But, when I was in Florida, I grew fig trees, oranges and grapefruits.

myLot reputation of 99/100. GardenGerty (35334)   ranked 1 out of 1,674 in gardening  5 years ago

It seems like maybe you are missing Florida? What took you so far away? I am sure that the desert is great for some people. Thanks for responding so faithfully.

I have not planted any here where i live now but hopefully in the future i will be able to move to southern Texas so that I can grow many kinds of tropical fruit trees. I understand that the tomato plants (of the indeterminate kinds) will grow year round down there and keep on producing fruit.

myLot reputation of 99/100. GardenGerty (35334)   ranked 1 out of 1,674 in gardening  5 years ago

I will come down and eat tomatoes with you when you go. Is that pretty soon?

myLot reputation of 81/100. oscarbartoni (1958)   ranked 124 out of 1,674 in gardening  5 years ago

If I could I would be down there right now but I am going to have to wait for another year or two now because of circumstances beyond my control. When I get down there you are welcome to come down and enjoy the tomatoes and any other vegetables that I have growing.

Two years ago this fall we travelled to Columbia, Missouri, to a Chestnut Roast, actually a celebration of the American Chestnut, or rather some other varieties, I guess. It was educational, and fun. I would love to own a few acres and grow some myself.

Out the back I have 7 fruit trees.. 2 apples, orange, lemon, plum , apricot & manadarin. The dogs eat the fruit off all the lower branches.

myLot reputation of 99/100. GardenGerty (35334)   ranked 1 out of 1,674 in gardening  5 years ago

Is a gum tree the same as eucalyptus? I bet you have healthy dogs.

myLot reputation of 98/100. jennybianca (7229)   ranked 4 out of 1,674 in gardening  5 years ago

Yes, they are the same. Sorry, I should have been more specific & not used the local name!

It is hard to balance the pressure of development with the needs of conservation. I like to have fruit trees.

The only tress I have in my yard are banana trees. They are very useful. We also use the leaves in many ways and they serve as shades to us. I dont have any ornamental trees around me and I envy my neighbors who have Indian Trees or Mango Trees in their yards.

myLot reputation of 99/100. GardenGerty (35334)   ranked 1 out of 1,674 in gardening  5 years ago

I would love to grow bananas and mangoes, but it does not happen in the middle of Kansas. I thought that banana leaves might be useful.

I remember when I lived in duplexes, but we had some yard. My daughter feels sad as she lives in apartments right now.
