Why dont more people worship Mother Earth?  

Excellent thread!! and I agree....and for me personally Earth Day IS everyday :-D but like you I am a Pagan so its naturally what I would believe...Unfortunately I think ppl tend to NOT view it that way because they'd have to own up to the fact that we are basically killing our mother (and brothers and sisters in ALL living things if that makes sense) for starters and others just find it too difficult to see life so simply and it really IS that simple..

but we could also consider that not all mothers are kind and nurturing. and Mother Nature can also be a cruel and neglectful parent.

there are tornadoes, floods, famines, Earthquakes, diseases...

Nature is a vast and powerful force, deserving honour and respect, but we can never expect her to take care of our every need. we can work hard to work with nature and produce food and shelter, but if we just sit there and do nothing, we can't expect nature to look after us. sometimes, even when we honour and respect and worship her, she'll still neglect us.


this doesn't make the Goddess bad. why should something so vast even notice us, after all. I don't beleive these are deliberate acts of cruelty. but nature is not like us. it is not moral or judgemental, it just is. it gives life, and it takes life away, and either is the same in her eyes.

Personally (speaking for myself), I do not worship the earth because the earth is just a planet, a part of creation. It is not the Creator. My religion teaches that the Creator is separate from the created universe, the Maker of space and time but existing outside of these things. The earth is to be respected, but never worshiped.

well, for me I choose to worship God and only God. We should respect and take care of the Earth and things he has provided for us, but I wouldnt worship it. The Earth is fleeting. God isnt. To me, that is the difference.

It saddens me that people are sometimes so closed of to this concept but what can we do?

God created the Heaven and the Earth, not mothers. HE made the animals and had Adam name them. God specifically forbids the worship of the stars, suns, moons, the heavens and things of the earth or made from the earth and for that reason, we should honor and revere HIM. Okay what woman created the planets or the stars? Did the earth make the plants and the animals? No, the earth was formed by God HIMSELF and did not appear magically because Hera or some goddess decided it should be. You are worshiping the creature rather than the Creator and for that you are an idolater.

I do not have any particular religion but take something from each. I somewhat understand the Wiccan concept of Mother Earth which is very similar to the Natives concept if I'm not mistaken. I do agree everyday should be earth day because if we do not take care of our earth it will not take of us . As we are starting to see now with all the earth changes. I believe it's all about the circle of life.

Well if we were to 'worship a goddes called mother earth', that would be putting other gods before God, the maker of heaven and earth. And that is one thing the 10 commandments says not to do.

I see it as God provides the earth with shelter by growing trees, etc. God has given man the knowledge of growing vegetables and provides the rain....

God states in hte Bible that we should not worry for He will provide all our needs.

Well I do have to say that those who don't worship Mother Earth are the ones who are ruining the atmosphere and poisoning the waters. I don't worship anything, but I do respect Mother Earth. We only have one chance, if we ruin that one chance, we will be living on a planet that will no longer be able to sustain life. Stpo burning fossil fuels, cutting down the major forests, damming up the rivers, and building Metropolises. if we don't stop all these things we will all parish and so will Mother Earth
