I will try to post one new recipe for baking in a can each day of the week for the upcomming week. I am not sure about the weekend. Just keep checking for my new post. I will begin the title to each one with "Baking In A Can" and I will give the Recipe number and the recipe name. I think this will make it easier for you to make sure you do not miss a recipe.
Note: I added the original line about the broom straw. Years ago that is how cooks knew if cakes and breads were done. They used a broom straw. I can remember this well as child when I was growing up.
This is my favorite of all the recipes in a can. I have written it up so you can give it as a gift to be made by the receipent. To Make it now, all you have to do is read the instructions and follow them except putting them in a ziploc bag as that part will not be necessary. I hope you enjoy the recipes. Be sure to tell me how you like them.
Now for the recipe of the day:
Honey Bun Cake Mix in a Can
3/4 cup yellow cake mix
1 TBSP brown sugar
1 TBSP finely chopped pecans
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1. Place cake mix into a ziplock sandwich bag.
2. Mix next three ingredients. Place this mixture into a separate
snack size ziplock bag and label "Streusel Mix".
3. Place bag of cake mix and bag of streusel mix into a 14-16 oz.
can (regular size vegetable or fruit, etc. can)
3. Decorate can and attach the following recipe with following instructions
HONEY BUN CAKE TO BAKE IN A CAN
1. Remove mix from can. Empty bag of mix into a medium bowl.
2. Add 1 TBSP water, 1 TBSP oil and 1 egg. Mix well.
3. Sprinkle streusel mix from streusel mix packet into batter. Stir
once or twice to just barely mix.
4. Remove any labels or decorations from can. Add a little oil to
the can and swish around to coat sides of can. Discard excess oil.
(Do NOT spray can with cooking spray! It Will NOt work in sprayed can.)
5. Spoon batter into can and bake at 350 for 28-32 minutes. Cake is
done when a broom straw or bamboo skewer placed in middle of cake
comes out clean).
6. When cake is done let it cool for 15 minutes in the can. Run a
plain table knife around edge of cake to loosen it from the can.
Shake can to allow cake to slide out.

What a great way to use up old cans that we would normally toss out. This is a better than having to go out and buy those aluminum bread pans. Love it that you use cake mix! I can buy it for cheap at Aldi or the scratch and dent store.

We used to bake these in the campfire when we went camping. They are great.

That sounds like a really neat idea. I'll have to dig my cans out of the recycling bin now. Do you put the cans on a baking sheet or just put them in the oven as they are? I can't wait to try it.

I usually do put mine on a cookie sheet as they are easier to take out but you dont have to if you dont want to.

So, how many cakes in cans can you get from one cake mix? I am glad I read this again, because I thought you were baking up the entire mix in one can. LOL. This does not use the whole mix. Do you think that any kind of cake or bread will bake well in a can? Do you know for sure, is the rule of oiling not spraying a consistent rule for baking in cans? I guess I am just full of questions about this. It intrigues me, as I love the idea of reuses for things, hate waste. I will probably wait for another recipe or two so that I can bake more than one at a time. You can use permanent markers and color the outside of the cans and it should look good and stay. I will keep my eyes open for the rest of the recipes, and maybe AmbiePam has some she can post, too.

Questions?? Questions??? LOL
I usually just make as many as I need at one. Never used the entire cake mix. I often make various kinds of breads and cake at the same time to have a variety on hand or to share.
Yes, all homemade breads and cakes that I have tried will work in the cans. Just fill the can only 1/2 full of whatever batter you are using. You will have to play around with the time though as that will vary from recipe to recipe.
NEVER Spray it just wont work on the cans. I dont know why but I have tried and the food sticks and will not come out.
I will try to post one recipe a day through the week. I am not sure if I will get to post on weekends or not but just might. Enjoy.
I hope I answered all your questions. Have fun baking

Oh this sounds really good- And I didn’t think about giving it as a gift- like the gifts in a jar- I’m not sure how many people I know would bake it in a can- but I’m going to try and see what it tastes like- I have a grandma who lives on her own and loves sweets- Maybe a great gift idea for her- she has everything she wants and needs-

Thanks for the recipe. I will try this out next time we do a family cookfest (you know those days when you seem to do nothing else but cook..lol). Does this work with cans used for sardines and meatloaf too?
