Misplaced sense of humor....? |
| |
| There was a discussion question recently about what kind of sense of humor we had, sarcastic, dry, normal.....I think there may be another heading there called misplaced or maybe isolated. I think I would fall into that category easier than any of the others. Have you ever been in a situation where something has struck you as very funny, but you are the only one laughing? Ever seen the chuckles funeral episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show where she is laughing at a funeral and can't stop? That is the type of humor I have. If no one else thinks it is funny I'm going to laugh...:} Picture if you will going to the movies with my two young sons to see the second Indiana Jones movie and they are so embarrassed because I found it funny. Just this morning while I was reading my book while waiting to drop off my clients something struck me as funny....the case workers that help unload clients asked what was so funny and I told them it was a love scene....okey dokey. Now they are all giving me looks like dayum, she is already on the short bus, but maybe she should be riding not driving? So has anyone ever been in a situation where they are the only one laughing? | | | | | |

| | This happens to me all the time, I just chalk it down to me having superior wit, either that or there is something wrong with me. | | | | | | |

| | Judging from the responses here and my own experiences I would say there is nothing wrong with you, people just have to look on the lighter side sometimes. | | | |

| | I call a misplaced sense of humour a warped sense of humour. I can be warped in the things I laugh at. I can also be dry, sarcastic, crude or witty. A great deal depends on my mood. One thing is for certain I love to laugh and make others laugh. There have been occassions when I have laughed when nobody else was, it makes you feel silly. One one occassion I was on the bus and as I looked out of the window I saw a seagull poop on this woman. The look of disgust and disbelief on her face cracked me up, but nobody else appeared to have noticed. I was the only one laughing, and I was alone. Those around me must have thought I had escaped the local institution for the insane. | | | | | | |

| | I used to (hope I've conquered it) laugh when I didn't really think it was funny. Maybe it was nerves sometimes and then again sometimes I would laugh when, for example, someone slipped and fell or hurt themselves in another unfortunate accident. I felt ashamed but instead of stopping I laughed harder. Not for a serious accident just little ones. Very weird huh! | | | | | | |

| | I don't find it weird at all...it is what slap stick comedy is all about and sometimes laughing can make the person feel better. As long as the person isn't injured the laughter sometimes relaxes the situation. | | | |

| | AT first I couldn't think of any specific episode in my life where I burst out laughing at a time or point where one shouldn't have....but then you gave that marvelous example of chuckles funeral in Mary Tyler Moore...and yes, I remember that episode--Okay...here's what got me laughing...I have no idea why, but it did...This was when Pope John II died...the news media showed him lying in state as mourners came by to pay their tribute to him--I don't know why, but suddenly a image in my head came to mind...That there was the Pope's body was on that table and suddenly I had this vision of him popping up and saying to the effect..."Just kidding folks"--I know, I know...totally weird...but I really cracked up with that image in my head..So I just you could really view this as misplaced humor | | | | | | |

| | It was probably a little bit strange, but I can also understand that situation, sometimes the subconscious rebels against reality and this is what happens. | | | |

| | My wife has a friend who finds other peoples' misfortune HILARIOUSLY funny. She is not an unkind or ungenerous person and I am sure she does not really have a nasty streak, but if you were to trip up in front of her she would dissolve into howls of laughter. Even complete strangers have this effect on her and I am certain she must have been close to getting punched on occasions for giggling at accidents. We told her about spilling some paint on the carpet whilst decorating and it was about 10 minutes before she copuld speak clearly on the phone as she nearly choked laughing. | | | | | | |

| | I would have to say she is lucky she hasen't been injured by some less tolerant soul. Laughing at other people's misfortunes is like setting firecrackers off in a herd of cattle. | | | |

| | Jesus... that's the story of my life. I can't even begin to count the times I've cracked a joke to bring what I thought was appropriate humor into the mix only to find that I was the only one chuckling. And then I look up at the rest of them and say, "What?" The latest incident was during the rehearsal dinner of my nephew's wedding. I was toasting the bride to be and welcoming her into the family. I said, Nikki can officially become a member of the family now because I have seen her boobs." And I recounted a story about a recent trip to the water park where Nikki came down the waterslide, but sadly, her bikini top, didn't. The bride's father wanted to hit me with his cane. The bride's grandfather turned down his hearing aid. My side of the family let out a collective "I can't believe you," and wouldn't let me have anymore wine. I spend so much time with my foot in my mouth that I'm half way there getting dressed in the morning. I know where at least one shoe is. | | | | | | |

| | I do the same thing. My sense of humour is pretty sick. My dog once licked my step daughter on the face. I lied and said "Careful- don't let him lick your face- he keeps chewing on used tampons from the bathroom bin!!!" I hooted at her facial expression. She didn't speak to me for two months. | | | |

| | The sad part about this story is that I have a dog who had a taste for tampons. Bailey, my rat on crack would raid the bathroom garbage can and just chew away and then come out and want to lick your face. She's a chihuahau, brindle colored... a precious baby. Oh yeah... she has a hankering for cat turds every now and then too. The Vet told me that the way cats process sugar in their diets (apparently they don't), to a dog, a cat turd is like a Snickers bar to them. Nice eh? There goes my sense of humor again. | | | |

| | I don't know about you , but I have found that family functions just don't invite humor, especially humor directed at a family member. I was the maid of honor at my sister's first wedding so I had to make a toast....I told everyone that since they kept me awake all night giggling I was too tired to think of anything nice to say...this they find funny...go figure. | | | |

| | Oh yes - very often As a Brit I have a very dry, sarcastic sense of humour anyway - I tend to see humour in words not practical jokes, slapstick or visual gags, - and as such, sometimes words or situations, that no one else finds funny have me in fits of giggles! I can't think of a specific example now off the top of my head, but I often hear or read something that strikes me as funny, but no one else finds it so! Interesting discussion - thanks for it. | | | | | | |

| | Ah British humor, it was always represented and rather dry wit, but I never understood the stereo typing especially since you had Benny Hill. I also have a dry and sarcastic bend and can enjoy a good pun or play on words, the double entendres are good too especially when you seem to be the only one that sees it. Other people looks of confusion will just make me laugh all the harder..:} | | | |

| | Ah yes - well Benny Hill! He became "unacceptable" here in England because he was too "politically incorrect", and he died alone a broken man, because he couldn't get work. I was no fan, but what happened to him was sad, because he was clever in his way. Lately there has been somewhat of a revival in his work - mostly among students and young people who don't remember him the first time round, and enjoy the total fun of him. Btw - "Ernie - the Fastest Milkman in the West" is still one of my all time favourite songs:-)). | | | |

| | Politically incorrect can be a bad thing, I will never understand why people can't just laugh, destroying someone like Benny Hill only lends credence to whatever he was doing. I was not a big fan of his either, but he did have some funny stuff. The way politicians persist in doing their laundry in public makes their sensitivity rather laughable. | | | |
