Big Brave Hearts in Little Packages

Schatzie a Big Hearted Baby - One of my three

As I am mom to three chihuahuas (at one time mom to a couple of doberman pinschers) this article shows that they are real brave and protective little dogs. Unfortunately they were publicized as fashion accessories by Paris(cite) Hilton. What do you think of small dogs? Tiny dog saves baby from rattlesnake Zoey is a Chihuahua, but when a rattlesnake lunged at her owners' 1-year-old grandson, she was a real bulldog. Booker West was splashing his hands in a birdbath in his grandparents' northern Colorado back yard when the snake slithered up to the toddler, rattled and struck. Five-pound Zoey jumped in the way and took the bites."She got in between Booker and the snake, and that's when I heard her yipe," Monty Long, the boy's grandfather, said Thursday. The dog required treatment and for a time it appeared she might not survive the bites she suffered earlier this month. Now she prances about."These little bitty dogs, they just don't really get credit," Booker's grandma Denise Long told the Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070722/ap_on_fe_st/odd_chihuahua_rattlesnake;_ylt=Au39Ttlr_8QwnEZjGOsYB1UDW7oF Photo Schatzie (Chihuahua) and her toy teddy bear friends

Dogs are the most loyal of all our domestic pets, they'd give their lives to protect a member of their "pack"

What do I think of small dogs: Let me count the reasons I can't stand them. Obnoxious, pushy, spoiled, untrainable, rude, demanding, farty, noisy, barfy, wormy, disobedient, gluttenous, dishonest, lazy, annoying, irritable, liars, selfish, uncaring, sneaky, snappy, whinny, useless, They also hog the bed, crapp on the rug, bark insantly at night, knock things over, chase the cats, leave hair everywhere, scratch the paint off the doors, bite the repair man, and slobber and fawn over visitors and act like the people whom they live with abuse them. But the very worst thing is they act like they think they own me. But I could be wrong. What do you think?

I think that could be the reason you have a very large breed of great daschshund, brother to the great dane. Right?

People and their dogs bond very strongly, and the same goes for cats. We take it for granted that something not like us, not of our species, will love us, then we get a demonstration like this of selfless love. Pets have blessed my life for a long time. I am glad this particular little dog survived. That child is going to have a companion in adventures that will serve him well.

You mean those little things do more than ride is a purse and look cute? "Oh like, you know that is so hot." LOL This brings up a conversation hubby and I had yesterday on animals. I watch my cats and dog and I tell ya there is intelligence there. I witness these creatures make decisions and judgements all the time. They are quit smart, this story just further proves this.

They are very intelligent and my three all have different personalities. I have Schatzie, bossy and queen over all the others. Pepi, so laid back but mischievous. Honey greedy and needy. BTW your first line sounded just like the Parasite.

This is an incredible story, & I belive every word of it. Time & time again, we hear of stories of dogs who act to save their owners lives, or to defend them in some way. Zoey must have sensed the danger the snake would have towards the toddler. I know the little dogs can be very brave, but I have heard of many different breeds, who will act when there is danger, or even get help. I still remember the story, in Sydney, of the elderly man who had a stroke. He managed to crawl to his bed, but couldn't call for help. His dog saved his life, by pulling a small towel along, dipping it in his water bowl, & taking it to his owner to suck on. When the water bowl became empty, he went to the toilet bowl, dropped the towel in, & took it back to his owner. For 5 days the man survived like this, until found by neighbours. I know that wasn't a story of dog bravery, but this dog showed intelligence & great compassion. I imigine the dog in your story, Zoey, will receive an official award. Thank you for this story.

I don't think I do know the story of your dog saving your life, at least not that I can remember now. I would love to be reminded when you have time.

I like chihuahuas, they can be fun dogs to have. I have a friend that has two of them and she puts little outfits on them, she calls them her children, but they are so cute.

I have three and I would not insult them my dressing them up. My oldest and smallest is very prissy and dainty but she gives me dirty look and a low growl if I even try to put a coat on her in the winter. They are small but they are dogs and also have their dignity.

I'll stick to my Dobermans thank you...I have had them all my life, I have noticed that small dogs are yappy dogs and I really would not look at owning one..there are many great stories about dogs large and small...Its up the individual and everyone is different..

I had thought that I would not like any dogs other than dobermans but circumstances made it impossible for me to have big dogs so over the years they gradually got smaller and smaller. Of the many small dogs I've had I have only one who was yappy and (ouch my ears) I have it now!. LOL

Wow - what a story-- glad to hear she made it okay. My friend has a chihuahaus and her name is killer- she is the cutest, sweetest little thing- however she is very protective of her daddy- if someone she doesn't know gets to close to him- especially if he is holding her - she has a fit and tries to bite them. I have always wanted a small dog myself- I have grown quite fond of the puggles- they are sweet and cute too.

Shammy and Buca would be amazing gentle with a tiny dog and the little one would think he/she was as big as the other two. That is one thing I have to watch with mine they have no fear of larger dogs.

Unfortunately- this is too funny- but my dog Buca is afraid of little dogs...LOL-- now Shammy on the other hand is not afraid of anything. Once a dog has been accepted into our house they are great with them however they do not like puppies all that much and for some reason small dogs just don't rank on Buca's list- he just runs away and hides behind me of my husband- and girl dogs too- but yet if someone comes to the door he doesn't know he freaks out and becomes very scary-- go figure!

WOW, what an amazing story! I wonder if it's something instinctive with this breed, because they originated in a place where rattlers are an everyday danger? I'm so glad the brave little thing lived, they're so small, it's a wonder that little body could withstand the poison long enough to get to a vet. What a great story, thanks for pointing it out!

What a heartwarming story and what a brave little dog Zoey was! I love to hear about these stories - it shows us one of the reasons we love our pets so much! xxx

I am glad the little guy survived, and it just goes to show that size is not necessarily the measure of bravery. Any animal that is brought up by caring people will have a lion sized protective streak for the family members. Animal loyalty is probably the strongest of all, because it is based solely on love and caring.

You post is a great reminder that little animals can have big, brave hearts...and what amazing stories these are. I like your chehauhaua pictures too by the way. You are right sometimes people even judge animals from a sterotypical perception...these are great examples of it doesn't matter what you look like on the outside...it is what you have inside that matters. Uplifting reminder of how wonderful the relationship between pets and people is. Thanks for that.

When my daughter was little I overheard her telling another little kid that her mom only loved strangers with a leg on each corner. Maybe that was her reason for always bring home some stray cat or dog..
