Love My Cats, but they are Flea Bags |
| |
| My cats are sweet, cuddly and affectionate. They bring us gifts from their hunting expeditions. The one thing that they have brought home and I am not happy with is fleas. I have treated each of them with a flea killer. I have sprinkled flea powder on the carpets. But, the nipping, biting little devils will not go away. Tomorrow I will be heading off to find some flea bombs. After I secure the fish tank and scoot the cats outdoors, I am setting the bombs off. I do not like to go to such drastic measures, but there seems to be no other way to rid our home of the invaders. | | | | | |

| | Won't letting the cats out and then back in bring more fleas in? Or will there be a barrier after you bomb the joint? Just curious. Fleas are annoying..good luck. | | | | | | |

| | When I had cats, I put brewer's yeast and garlic powder in their food...3 cats for years..and never a flea. It maybe worth trying it for your cats, personally I try avoiding chemicals. Good luck. | | | | | | |

| | I have been doing battle with fleas too this summer. Its a bad year for fleas. I had 2 dogs and I have 2 cats. The 1 dog recently died from old age. One of the cats had kittens on Mothers day, she had 2 of them, they died at 3 weeks old. We figured it was from fleas, they bite and suck the blood, that makes the kittens anemic. Well in the meantime my other cat snuck out and got pregnant. I have been doing everything under the sun to get rid of the fleas. The new babies are born, now we are in battle with the fleas on the new babies. My DIL combs them out everyday, I also got some cedar bedding, I put some of it in socks and tied them up. I have that in the box with the kittens. The cedar is supposed to help repel fleas. Good luck with your battle, the rotten fleas are tough this year. | | | | | | |

| | I was just having a discussion with a friend on how this is supposed to be a banner year for fleas. We had used cedar in the litter boxes, but they still had fleas. | | | |

| | Allowing your cats to go outdoors is always an invitation for fleas. My pets don't go outdoors, but you can still get fleas anyway by bringing them in on your clothes or shoes. Advantage flea product is really good, though very powerful. Some cats may not react well to it, but it really works. The most important thing is to first get the fleas off the cats, since they are the host for the fleas. It may take more than one treatment with the flea bombs to get them out of your home. After you set off the bombs, vacuum like crazy and do as much laundry as you possibly can, wash your bedding, any dirty clothes, etc... If within one week you're still having the problem, do the flea bombs again (removing yourselves and the cats again, of course). I had a terrible problem with this year before last, and my cat never set foot outside. Apparently, I brought them in on my clothing. When the weather is extremely dry, fleas breed like crazy. My cat actually developed parasites (tape worms) from the flea bites, and then I had to treat him for that as well. I was really upset, because he hadn't done anything to deserve that. | | | | | | |

| | Advantage is what I always use. It works very well. My cats do not have a problem with fleas & they are allowed outside during the day. | | | |

| | Are these actual cat fleas they have.. one's that surive on cats? Or, fleas that are just using the cat for transport, but need other hosts to survive? We use flea collars & flea powder (they hate thye latter), but by far the most efferctive method of flea control are tablets. I think they are called "Advanatge" . These tablets kill the bredding cycle of fleas living on cats. They are cheaper in the supermarket than at the vets. If these fleas don't surive on cats, then I guess the flea bomb is the best idea. You could shampppo the carpet, preferably with hot water. | | | | | | |

| | I am going to buy flea collars for the cats too. I treated them with a product to help rid them of fleas too. I will also shampoo the carpets tomorrow after the flea bombs have done their stuff. | | | |

| | go to your vet and get some Front Line. Ask for the dog size and then ask what dosage you would give your cats. I think it's a 0.05 cc per every 10 lbs. But don't quote me on it. You need a syringe because you squirt in on the fur inbetween the shoulder blades on the back of the neck. The stuff is expensive but it works like a charm and will take care of your problem. You will need to treat the cats every 30 days. That over the counter stuff, been there done that and had the same problems you are having now. Front Line it really works. | | | | | | |

| | My cat doesn't go outside, but my dog does and we just treat him with Frontline and that has kept our house flea-free. Any flea that bites the dog dies before it is able to lay eggs, and it destroys eggs that are already there when it is applied. They make it for cats as well. YOu have to get it from a vet, but it is well worth the price. If you waited long enough, just treating the animals with the frontline would eventually kill off all the fleas over the course of 2-3 months. Of course, I'm sure you don't want to wait that long. I had a flea problem once in my old apartment (I only had the cat at the time, so I think I nust have broght the fleas in originally or they migrated from another apartment). I bought a spray bottle of flea killer for the rugs and furniture as well as some flea foam for the cat (applied like hair mousse, easier than a bath). I got both from the vet that time, too. I didn't see any fleas after the first treatment, although I did do a follow up treatment of both 30 days later to be sure I got any that might have hatched out in the mean time. As you can see, I'm a big fan of prducts from the vet. They are usually stronger than the stuff from the pet store; even though they are more expensive, you usually only have to buy it once and not try a bunch of different stuff to find out which will work, so it saves money in the end. As someone else mentioned, cats can get tapeworms from the fleas, that happened to my cat, too, so keep an eye out for that the eggs look like little wiggly grains of rice. Hopefully, this won't be a problem for you though. I wish you luck. | | | | | | |

| | I will give our vet a call in the morning to see if they have any products that will help. I am tired of the fleas biting my ankles and feet. Hopefully there won't be further complications with the cats. Thanks for the info. | | | |

| | Good luck! It's a battle and with the heat a mess! I hope your bomb will take care of any eggs hatching in the next few days. We had this problem last year when one of the girls brought home a kitten with fleas. It took forever to get rid of them! | | | | | | |

| | When I started scratching my ankles, I made our cats a house outside the garden. They stay there permanently although there are times when they want to go inside our house. If they were able to that, they sit regally in the spfa which I think they missed most. | | | | | | |

| | I have a friend who used to love cats, Elusive, but she got fed up with always fighting the fleas and got rid of the last two that she had. They were very cute. Her brother replaced the cats with a dog, and now everything seems to be going well. | | | | | | |
