Crickets---my favorite pet. What is yours, please?

Crickets are very good at fighting against each other if you make them fight by putting them in the same big enough box. You need a special kind of grass stem to touch them in the head to lead the direction toward each other. They sing well and loud with the grass stem that you play on them. When they both meet, they will fight bravely until the other one fails and flees. Crickets are really very interesting to me. I love to play with them so much. What about your favorite pet, please? Thanks in advance, my dear friends.

Cricket fight, this was one of the China emperor’s favorite games in the palace. I was quite curious about it when I first saw it in a classical movie in which an emperor was quite indulgent in this game. He used to sneak out from the assembly hall to fight crickets with his subordinates. I then reasoned out it must be a very excited and interesting game. I believe it is a very popular country game in your place. If one could get a King cricket he surely could then win lots of money. Is it true? As far as I know there is no cricket fight in my country here. Instead roaster fighting is quite common in the east coast of my country. My hubby liked spider fight during his childhood. It was a special species of spider, small and greenish, which could be found in between leaves in bushes. Long after the sunset here, very often the thrill chirpings of crickets could make the quiet country night not so lonely. Ever you hear this in your place?I came to know that crickets were agitated to fight by the tricks of straw stems. But I wonder why they are fighting for?

Hi jisir, I came across the ancient cricket fights from movies and history books. I’m interested in China history but not good as you said. Thanks for the complement.:) I do agree that cricket fight is a form of amusing game instead of gambling. Just imagine during those old days when there was not much amusement in the remote country sides. Cricket fight could be their affordable game after their hard day works. They were for pleasure not for the money so did the Emperor for sure as he had already won the whole country. I hope healthy cricket fights could be encouraged. Could this promote the awareness and caring attitude towards insects in the nature? I’m curious where you got your crickets?

Hello, lkbooi. You know a lot about China's history. Cricket fight was the favorite games of the emperor's. When we used to play cricket fight, we didn't gumble, just for fun. In old China, it was like this. You are so clever to know that the straw stems could agitate the crickets to fight. The straw stem is the very stuff to make them fight. They are warlike like bush. lol. Thank you very much for your response, dear lkbooi.

Those sweet days of childhood with much joy had gone but we are still much fascinated over them. I can imagine how wonderful was the cricket market, watching the admirable creatures and the interesting crickets fighting. This occasion could really attracted lots of people of different age groups. Can we still get any crickets in the market nowadays? Insect toys could bring us closer to nature. It’s always sad that modern man is keeping himself further and further apart from nature.

In this part of the world, Cricket refers to popular sport. How do you keep the crickets. Do they feel that some one is taking care of them? Do they stay or fly from place to place. Mine is Cats and kittens. I have right now 8 of them, they right royally go all over the places in my residence.

They are kept in bamboo cages with some spicy red fresh peppers and some cooked rice. When another cricket lovers wants to have his to challenge your cricket, you will both need to have a wooden box big enough for them to fight just like the bullfight in Spain. Very interesting. Hope you like it and try once if you can get two crickets from the wild. Have fun, ssh.

That is great observation. Here in Banglore, no crickets,no grasshoppers, no insects except cockroaches, because it is a concrete jungle for miles and miles. Thanks.

Thanks for your message. But I don't see it here in the column 'message.' You forgot, maybe? Or do you mean that you have posted a new discussion for that? Anyway, thanks a lot, ssh.

I agree with everyone who says that you have an intersting choice to have as a pet, Williamjisir. I don't know if I remember correctly, but aren't crickets also a sort of meter in telling the temperature? I think you have to count the number of chirps and add a number to it? I may be wrong though... Anyway, sad to say I am not a fond keeper of pets. What I do like to do is nurture caterpillars when in season. I have had success with only one kind so far, the citrus butterfly. It's an absolutely satisfying feeling to see a butterfly come into full term, although my success rate is very small.

Aren't crickets also a sort of meter in telling the temperature? I think the answer is positive because crickets come into being in summer when it is very hot and will be gone in the middle of autumn or later when it is cool.

Hahaha Will. Thought i'd heard it all. Obviously not and your choice of pet is the most exotic i ever heard of haha :) My dog, Yellow, love crickets too, but thats to hunt and eat then if she gets away with it. Is that common in China to have insects as pets?

Morning. To answer this question, I say 'Yes.' Crickets have been raised as fighting pets ever since ancient China in the emperors' palace. Also the common people love to play with the crickets. Me, too, when I was still a child. Thanks for your time and response, dear kim. Enjoy yourself.

Morning, kim. Yes, if you try playing the crickets and make them fight each other, you would surely like it very much, but I need to say that all the crickets are in their bloom in summer and will be gone in late autumn. Therefore it is a good season to have crickets before that. Thanks for your further discussion, my dearest kim. Have a good day.

Its actually interesting and funny to see the difference in culture with regards to pets. Though i may admit i cannot see myself playing as much with crickets as i do with my dog. But maybe that is coz i never tried it? Hmm, interesting. Have a nice day yourself Will.

I always loved hamsters when I was still in college. I actually got to take care of three generations of them. But it was pretty challenging when it comes to cleaning up their cages. I've had 20 of them, if I remember it correctly. But sadly, we also had a cat at that time. And Jaguar, our cat's name, usually came up with a way to turn the cage upside down. By the next morning, I'll just find the cage on the floor, upside down, with my hamsters missing!Jaguar had killed almost 6 of them and because my father refused to give up the cat, I had to give away my hamsters. Better to be taken care of by my other friends than to be killed by the cat.

Morning, jcj. I am so sorry for six of the loved hamsters to have been eaten by the hungry Jaguar. You are clever to have sent the rest of the hamsters to your friends to take care of to avoid further loss. You are really cool, friend.

It is really a good idea to let this hobby of yours to have hamsters as your pets pass on to your son when he grows old enough to know how to raise them. This way you are still getting back your favorite pets back again. A good idea. Thanks for your further response, dear jcj.

William, i meant I've had 20 hamster, not 20 cages.LOL Sorry about that. If I've really had 20 cages, I'd have to branch out and hire others to take care of cleaning them up!

That's interesting, I've never heard crickets as being someone's favorite pet. Mine would be kittens/cats or puppies/dogs. I love them the most when they're so tiny.

Dogs and kittens look more cute when they are tiny. I also love them very much. I thank you very much for your responding to all of my discussions. You are a very nice friend to be with, but I am sorry to say that it is a little difficult for me to respond all of your discussions as I know little about sports, new season and so on. I hope that I can have more of your discussions that I can respond to. Thank you very much for your responses, my dear friend. I appreciate them very much. Happy posting, friend.

Dogs are really faithful animals. They understand people well. They seem to be very huamn. When a friend of yours comes to your house, the dog usually shows its friendship by smelling you wagging its tail and walking around you. It is so cute.

I've seen crickets in pet stores before, but I've never met anyone who had them as pets. I like cats as pets. They are very funny to watch, nice to pet, and they will play with you.

Oh, yeah. I can see that cats are very nice pets as well. They are very gentle and very good at catching rats in the house. That was long ago when we lived in an old house. We raised cats. They were so good at catching the rats. When they utter, the mice are not brave enough to come out the holes and show up. But now we live in a new apartment, there is no rats in the house at all, no place for them to hide. So we don't raise cats. Anyway, cats are our good friends. They are very helpful in the country. Thanks so much for your response, my dear friend.

i dont have any pets at this moment , but i have had dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, hermit crabs, fish, and frogs. out of all them my favorite pet was my puppy... he was so playful and loveable.. he was such a cutie pie! fast earner and so outgoing too.. sadly he got hit by a car. and since then i have not had another one... to comment on your crickets i wanted to first say that that is an interesting creature to have as a pet.. when im out and about i dont mind the cricket noise, but speaking of that right now there is one or two that will not stop! its driving me crazy this lilttle bzzz bzzz bzz bzzz not stop.. i live in a small tralior with crank out window so i cant have an air conditioner or a fan in the wiondow and i have to have the windows open due to the heat being so embareable.. however i dread doing so. some night id rather sweat and sleep so hot and uncomfortable then have my window open and hear them crickets... i dont know how but they keep maagning to get into the bathroom too... ill wake up from the noise and follow the annoying bzzz bzzz bzz until i find them!

Until you find them and what will be followed seems a little crazy? Hehehe. Yes, the crickets that you have mentioned are not those fighting ones. They are just house crickets with only one pale color. The fighting kind are somewhat yellow and brown and black well above the wings. They will never be found in the house, but in the wild open place. Thanks very much for your time and response, beautiful mama.

Wow, I didn't know that one could keep a cricket as a pet. Interesting. I had no idea either they fought each other. I'm not really a pet person although I do have 4 fish and 3 dogs here at home. I take care of them by feeding them, my husband does most of the "nurturing" part I guess you could say, like giving them the attention, playing with them, that stuff=)

You have a made a great choice for a pet. Very low maintenence, no bed, veternarian visits and no feedings. And they're great on the hearth - as a cricket on your hearth - your firepit or fireplace - is a sign of good luck. :) I love all animals, currently my favourite are my cats. However, I'd be equally happy with a dog, fish, bird...panther.

Hello, artemis. Thank you very much for your response and time. I am sorry to say that the crickets are not those in the house where you can find at the fireplace, but in the field or at a graveyard. They are wild crickets, not house ones. Only those wild crickets are warlike if you use a straw stem to tease him/her. Thanks, my dear friend.

i don't like any pets at all. my father likes dogs most, there are three dogs in my parents family. he thinks that dogs are faithful, and can easily be fed.as they live in the countryside, the dogs also keep as a door-man.i guess there is still one reason,my sister and i live a little far away from them,we can't accompany them, but dogs can.

I have to say that dogs are very good companies to humans. They are just family members. They are so nice to work as gatekeepers. This summer vacation, I went to my cousin in the country and they have a nice dog that watches the house when the hosts are out. The dog was so friendly and wagged its tails around us and smell our legs. But still I was afraid of it. I was afraid that the fleas might get onto my body. Laughingly my cousin said that it doesn't have fleas in summer but in winter. Oh, my. Anyway it is a nice idea to have a dog in the country as a gatekeeper though it is also our family member. Thanks so much for your response and time, my dear friend.
