I noticed on mail that I get, my full Social Security Number is displayed..What if this mail doesn't come to my address for some reason and ends up in the hands of someone else? I don't think the whole number should be on there...What do you think?

Do you mean on the outside of the envelope or on the documents inside? I thought they stopped putting your SS number on the outside of any mail, like on income tax booklets they used to be right on the address labels but they don't do that anymore. If you ever get a piece of mail that you think had been opened before I'd make sure to check with the credit bureaus to make sure nothing has shown up on your reports, as in if someone were to try to steal your identity. That's a very real danger these days and something to definitely be concerned about. As a letter carrier I was once part of an investigation on one of my customers who had a regular operation going on. She was opening accounts in other people's names all over the place, but they got her! It's a federal offense to open anyone else's mail, unless it was a legitimate accident, which could happen if it got misdelivered. Also, everyone should be careful how they discard any mail that has that kind of information on it. You can't be too careful, and don't think just because you put something in a trash container that it's safely gone. Annie

The information was not on the outside of the envelope...It is sad that others have to open someone elses mail...Eventually they will get caught..

SSN numbers should not be visible anywhere on your mail as far as I know. I would call those places that you receive your mail and check why its on there! that sounds not so good my friend!

I do believe that is your identity number, and it shouldn't be...They should have a totally different number...

Nope your right it shouldn't be... I think that's a good way for people to get a hold of it and use it without you knowing.. And that's also how identity theft comes in place.. Why would someone mainly a company use your Social security number in the first place if I do remember right when my dad was getting Social Security checks they never put his Social Security number on anything none of his papers..

I agree with you as well. I think that is very dangerous especially as all the locked mailboxes in our street were broken into. Just thinking of what thieves could have done with that information is scary.

No, it shouldn't be there at all. I would be uncomfortable with only part of it showing. I would call the company it is coming from be removed from their mailing list until they can resolve the issue. Yikes. That is scary.

With all the security you would think they wouldn't do it...

Oh, that's very scary, isn't it? It's so easy to steal our personal information nowadays. I think they should omit that type of info, when they send the mail to us. I don't think there's really a need for it to be there anyway.

Hey Feona1962, I agree. They should definately not have your full SS#. We have gotten plenty of mail that didn't belong to us...(we gave it to them though, of course). Its scry to tink that if it fell into the wrong hands they could do anything with it. I think you should complain.

If I get others mail it goes to the person or back to the post office, but what if someone else had gotten it...Scary thought..

Shouldn't be there at all but I know of instances where it still happens. If its on the envelope or notice itself you may really have a problem. If its on the letters themselves I'd still have a problem with it. I'm surprised its not just the last 4 digits.

Feona I do not think they should do that at all as its too easy for mail to go astray and someone to get and use your number. I think they should leave that off completely as I see no reason for anyone to use your social security number but yourself ever. My husband had his social security check stolen and his name forged from our apartment mail box. this was a number of years ago but they had his number. He had to call social scurity and they traced it and also they sent him a new check but it took time. I would write to these people and ask them not to display your social security number at all ever on any correspondence that they send to you. good luck.
