Generation Gap... |
| |
| Is today's music just plain crap or is it just the "generation gap" finally catching up with me? When I was growing up my parents always told me about how good "their" music was, the big band sound, singers like Frank Sinatra and Perry Como, stuff like that but they actually had to admit they liked some of the music I listened to. When my daughter, now 37, was growing up she and I actually like most of the same songs, so there was no real conflict there. But NOW the old "generation gap" has finally gotten to me! Or could it be (I say YES) that much of today's music is just simply crap? It seems like all the songs sound alike, there is no need for an artist to have any singing talent because it's mostly all rap, and there is no such things as nice, meaningful lyrics anymore. OK, there ARE exceptions, but for the most part this is how it is. Or is it really just that i'm getting old, like my grandkids tell me...lol...? But, since this is a discussion I fully expect to hear from some of you with a different opinion, so come on, let's talk! Annie | | | | | |

| | I was raised listening to oldies and country, so of course I listen to that still, but I listen to all the music today, and even my parents like some of the music today. I can admit that even me at 21 I don't even like some of the stuff that's put out because it feels like they just throw crap together. | | | | | | |

| | I am 53 and I have children aged 24, 23, 20 and 15. I like most of their music, even some of those rap songs. I find the rhythm and tune of their choice. The same way, they like the songs during our younger years. I think it will depend on the "taste" of music by younger generations now. There are a lot of revivals from our generation and I told my children that music of our generation will really hold for some time. | | | | | | |

| | You're so right about the music from our generation. In fact, I just heard on the news that the Police reunion tour was the top concert series of the year. Annie | | | |

| | well i agree with you that not all of the newest singer today are good..i mean it doesn't necessarily have to have the voice and talent to sing..as long as they can sing that it just fine and they get album..i don't seem to like most of the new songs today..some are good but most are not..some don't mean anything and some i just cannot understand what message they bring..i would likely prefer the old ones..more meaningful..some can even make me cry..i love music but i know which one is the best..the singer might not sound good..but i will love it if it brings some meaning.. | | | | | | |

| | It could be a little of both. You can be getting old if you can't get why the kids like hip hop and rap. and it is true, there aren't as many good songs out today.I love music and always have. I am a few years older than your daughter. My mom like blues and country. My dad like jazz. They both liked the big bands. And I liked them all. There wasn't a generation gap on my side but when I got into rock and roll that's when my mom couldn't get into my music. And I was in my teens so I playing too loudly didn't help.My mom liked songs where you could understand every word that was sung. I would like a song and not even hear the lyrics. But before she passed away i was getting her to listen to a little rock and roll and she liked it.When Rap came out I wasn't into it, but in the pass few years I have gotten to like it. But still there aren't as many good songs out there.I remember when I was in my teens there were so many great songs and there were different styles out all at the same time. But now it is either r&b based pop, hip hop or country. That is it. | | | | | | |

Do you feel entertainted when screaming singing like screaming like an crazy idiot? Singing like you can't breath? What a stupid song... old song are better... it makes me feel cool and relax.... | | | | | | |

| | I have to agree with you about Rap music being garbage most of the time but,I think you should just go about changing what ever station that you currently listen to.There are progressive radio stations that play good music. My Son who is only twelve takes my music to burn his own cd's to listen to;It's just a matter of finding the right stations and stay away from the Top Forty type of radio broadcast | | | | | | |

| | LOL well I'm the same age as your daughter is but I love music from all eras myself....I grew up on 60s and 70s music (various genres) some of which is great and some of which sucks terribly LOL But i love music from the 20s right up to current...of course again, some of it sucks (for each era) and some doesnt ya know....Luckily for me my kids have jsut as wide of tastes in music as I always have (we're all very passionate about tuneage) AND we dont listen to the radio LOL I think thats the big problem is the radio stations tend to play the mainstream junk and they cant just play it once in a while....they feel the insane, highly annoying need to play the same songs OVER AND OVER AND OVER...did I mention "over"?? ;-) I gave up on the radio about 10 yrs ago actually...too many repeats of crap and too many commericals :-/....There is a lot of "new" stuff out there that is really good..its just not mainstream and doesnt get the air time which is a shame cause a lot of these really great artists are slipping through the cracks ya know... "there is no need for an artist to have any singing talent because it's mostly all rap" I dont know about that...I mean I agree with you to an extent but I think its more about the "show"...doesnt matter if a person can sing or has good lyrics etc etc..so long as their promoters can dress them up in a showy, pretty package thats all that counts these days it seems...Kinda sad and sick if you really think about it.... | | | | | | |

| | Music is changing. Well, the most popularmusic is;) You can still buy cds of people with sinatra Feeling buy in order to do it you have to go to a big store and do a lot o searching. Whats in right now is mostly hip-hop, pop, rnb (I'm not counting rock music beacuse it's always good xD). When i bought my first Destiny's Child CD my mother said it was squared music and didn't like it. But now she's a great fan of them and this kind of music. What is with the industry right now is that mot of people don't make music now, they're making beats instead. That's not the same but I like it too. As for lyrics... There are, in rap too. Rap just tends to be pretty vulgar and have lyrics about girls and money so that may turn people off:/ | | | | | | |

| | different people have different opinions. what's your parents like is not what's you like. I think generation gap really exist, for we are growing up in different background. we should respect others, but we need not to accept their likes. | | | | | | |
