Do you really think that school and college education is worth the money? email this discussion to a friend?

sandipdey2 (22)3 years ago

Hello guys and gals,I am a newbie in mylot and this is my first owned discussion on mylot.Today I am going to ask you a harsh question in your life. While dealing with our kids we become emotional rather than practical, which i think is senseless. We spend plenty
on childs education, yet not all students have the same talent. This is the singlemost fact all parents
ignore. If you are given to reinvest in your childs education do you think school and college education is sufficient for them to be successful in life,is the amount spend on their education worth it?What if you child fails?would you still invest in his/her studies or be smart like the like of Billgates?Dont you think that most schools and colleges lack the training of practical aspects of life?Only a limited number of schools have excellent faculty?

What is important is giving of opportunities to your children. Yes they may fail that is a risk. But it would be a sadder state, for a child to grow up and say I was never given the chance. Not all students have the same abilities, true, but difference is what can make human race great if it takes the chance. I would pay the money to discover where my childs abilities are. She may be a doctor..or a plummer .. or a teacher ..or at the age she decides what she wants to try I would help her to find where she wants to go and pay for it. I would hope that my child has different abilities and talents than her peers. How boring it would be if we only rewarded people with the same talents or abilities.

sandipdey2 (22)  3 years ago

Thanks a lot for your response. You have made a vary valid point.all kids deserve an opportunity.I am not against investing in your childs future but to invest wisely in their future growth. After all we all live for our child. That is why all parents try to give the best education to their child. But it is not fair to go against the will of any child.

Education is properly pursued is always worth whether one has spent $100 or 10000 uSD. The issue is off late education has become a business proposal. YOu will be shocked to know the parents bring a chair from home, put it in open field near the school and sleep on chair to get an admissin form for their kid (nursery school) to be admitted next March. You know that school charges $2000 for admitting the child to the school, this apart, monthly fees has to be paid.
Probably this may not be the case even in USA.
SEcondly, in the name of liberalisation, government isnot spending much on education, then the private schools are having hey day.

sandipdey2 (22)  3 years ago

Many thanks for your response! You have explained nicely by examples how Government is misusing their ploicy of economic liberalization.Education has became a buisness today there is no doubt in that.

Cost of tuition keeps rising which is making it more difficult for many to attend college these days. That is one of the reasons I stopped attending graduate school was because of the cost. Not everyone is the same, but everyone does deserve a chance. Education can help in the workforce, but so does experience and determination these days.

sandipdey2 (22)  3 years ago

Thanks a lot for your response.Rising cost of education is a critical concern for parents. Most jobs are issued on both education and experience.

I definitely believe that the money spent on college is worth it. These kids need to be able to have that extra leverage these days in order to get by when it's time for them to start thinking of a career. My oldest daughter didn't even graduate from high school and now at the age of 40 is only 2 classes away from getting her masters degree in Criminal Justice and kicking herself for not having done it when she was younger and didn't have the responsibility of kids that she now has. The practical aspects of life I think is something that kids should get from their parents and not from the schools. So parent's do have their job cut out fot them there don't they?

sandipdey2 (22)  3 years ago

Thanks for your response!you have plenty of valid points.I still think it depends on the child how much he/she make up in life for educational investment.

It is true that Education is essential for everyone. But what we (father/mother) always not try to understand, sometimes difficult to understand is the talent within your child. All children can't be good in maths or physics (like Newton or so), some are just good in sports, some just can emerge into a successful businessman without any regular studies also. So, what the parents should do is to try to understand which is the best track for your child, in which way he/she takes interest or can excel. We need objective (target based) education not some subjective bookish study. Schools or a teacher is not responsible for pass or fail. It is the first responsibility of parents to give the student on his best performing path and also monitor his progress.

sandipdey2 (22)  3 years ago

First of all many thanks for your response! You have an ideal philosopy of life as I have.I also think
we should invest in the best track path of our child.

It is true not all kids have the same talent, that's why there are different courses to take to get different degrees and pursue your interests. I think that college is extremely important, regardless of it's a prestigious university or a two year tech school. In this day and age a college degree is almost a necessity for survival. If my child fails, that's fine, I look at failure as an opportunity to open a door to success. No one would know what they are good at if they never failed. As far as training of the personal aspects of life, most of that should be done by the parents, as well as learning as they go in college. I know when my sister went away to college she had to learn the responsibility of getting up to go to class, doing her laundry, etc. Even though I went to school closer to home I still had to get to classes, make it to work, etc...Not all of college is a party, there is responsibility involved.

sandipdey2 (22)  3 years ago

Thanks for your response. You have made a valid statement that if we are responsible kids at school and college then we would also be able to bear the responsibilities of life.

I believe that from school we only learn 10% of everything we need to learn. We live in a financial world. Therefore, financial education is the most important kind of education. So for me spending a lot of money on "expensive" schools is not worth it.

sandipdey2 (22)  3 years ago

Thanks a lot for your response! You have a real valid point. When i had studied in high school I never knew about money and currency because my parents and teachers never taught me about it.Now at college I am learning the subject of financial management on my own.

It depends on how you use it. You can go to the top school but if you are not going to work hard and take advantage of everything that's offered then no matter what it's not going to matter. What I majored in is practically worthless but that's my fault because I picked it. I never worked in the field I majored in. I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up (still don't) I just picked my major because of that and it was the second most popular major at my school. Looking back now I definitely would have majored in something different. But just having a degree I guess was still beneficial.

Despite that I absolutely loved college and I am glad for the experiences I had, and the people I met. I met people from all over the world. I wouldn't trade my experience for anything so for me yes it was worth it.

Personally, I'm not against to those people who spend their money on school and college education but these days, I am convinced that you can learn just about anything online. If you will surf the net, you will see lots of free resources. Do you think school and college education is sufficient for them to be successful? It depends if a person is motivated and disciplined. Nowadays, entrepreneurial business is booming and one thing for sure, it does not require a degree to employ yourself. What if your child fail? This is a problem. They should be taught that learning should be an active pursuit, not boring stressful chores. The problem here is that many students think more about their grades than actual education. Have a nice day!!!

sandipdey2 (22)  3 years ago

Thanks for your response!I learn anything and everything on net.It is the most effective cost productive resource pool on net.Self-motivation is a
critical factor in online learning.I am a college student and cannot study properly any subject i like because I am compelled to think more about my grades.
Actual education is a scarcity in todays world.Only
a few real enterpreneurs have real education.
