I'm gonna get it for this and I know it but I can't seem to help myself...this morning I watched part of - not much because I can't STOMACH the man - the Veterans Day ceremony from Arlington National Cemetary. Who else feels (I actually can't use his first name...lol!)Cheney was possibly the worst possible choice of speaker for something honoring our veterans? Mr. Five Deferrments "I had different priorities"? Just a thought, now let's discuss it!

I don't know much about Cheney. Did he ever serve? If he hasn't served and dodged it with deferments I don't think he really should be up there honoring those who did serve. Some guys to get deferments to go to college and stuff.. my brother did... but then he did serve in the navy and did his time there.

Cheney actually got a total of 5 deferrments during the Vietnam War and he's said he had "different priorities" at the time. The fact is, I don't hold it against anyone for getting deferrments - although during the Vietnam era the inequality was huge because it was the kids who couldn't afford to further their education who had no way of avoiding service - but in Cheney's case he's since criticized others who also didn't serve and he's certainly had no problem taking part in sending others to war throughout his career. Having come of age during that time (Vietnam) I have quite strong feelings about it. It was my friends and classmates who went there and in too many cases lost their lives. I personally give more credit to some who says "I got out of it and I didn't agree with the war" than to someone who says "I was all for the war but it wasn't in my best interest to go myself" which was basically the case for Cheney and others like him. I still can't believe I couldn't call him by his first name!

Mr. Cheney has to play the role, anniepa, much like the rest of them. After all, they do make a fine group of actors, don't they?

I have no knowledge of D*ick Cheney, (note of myLot censors: the first name is a shortened form of Richard, -- and if you think that is obscene, well consider the cost of going to changing the names of every single person and every book written by people of that name, etc.quite a financial cost. )but if he unable to serve because of medical conditions like being 4F, then he should be allowed to speak. However, if he had no legitimate reason to not take up military service, if he were afraid he might get hurt, then he should not have spoken.

He had "other priorities"; he got five deferrments for education, I think that's what they were all for. About the shortened form of Richard, what if someone wanted to start a discussion about a former Nascar driver D*ck Tr*ckle?

Eh, I personally dislike the man, but I think anyone should be allowed to honor our veterans.

However, it was wrong for him and his ilk to sling mud at Bill Clinton for doing exactly what Cheney did.

I agree that anyone should be allowed to honor our veterans but Cheney was a poor choice for featured speaker. As far as Bill Clinton goes, he stated he had been opposed to the Vietnam War but Cheney claimed to have been all for it but said he had other priorities. So, he believed it was worth our young men dying over, so long as one of the young men wasn't HIM! What a (insert cheney's first name)!

I am ashamed to admit annie, I almost expected this from someone here. V.P. Cheney is in fact the V.P. So it is naturaly the president's or vice president's place to do this. The same question came up when Clinton did it durring his tenure, though I did not have an issue with it, despite my detest for his ideals because it was his position and was in fact apropriate.

I have to admit that I really can't stand the guy so I'm probably not the most objective person in the world on this subject but it does really irk the heck out of me the way he's criticized others of his generation who didn't serve and he was supportive of the Vietnam war yet he had "other priorities". That bothers me, and I can't help it. There's no draft now but as you know there was during the Vietnam conflict so there weren't many privileged young men who had to serve while those from lower income families had no choice.

If Cheney stands against your veterans than he is probably the worst choice.
Who ever makes those descissions should put a lottle more thought into it.
Sorry I am not American, I am Canadian and our city did an absolutely beautiful tribute and our mayor was touching in his eloquence.
I am a very proud of our country and our troops. Susan

How about a person who is a Draft Card Burner, Goes overseas, on an Educational Deferment, and speaks out agains the troops. What about a person who has no respect for the military and cuts the budget such that we lose more men in training mishaps because of equiptment failure. (He did increas the budget once to get NAFTA Passes over the military objection because it was to be used for a plane they did not want or need but it was produced in a key Congressman district. He voted for NAFTA.) Read what the former Secret Service, the "Football" carrier, and the pilots have to say about him. He and his wife have the nerve to claim they support the troops. It was also the Democratic Party that went to court to block the votes of the men and women serving overseas because the absentee ballots could not be postmarked by the US Postal service before election day. They were postmarked by the Military Postal Service. The democratics also tried to force a change in the ballot weeks before the election, the result would be that the ballots could not get to the troops and back in time to be counted. Any democratic who speaks on Veterns Day or Memorial day should make you sick. Just like having Senator Ted Kennedy describe what it is like to drown - Shouldn't Mary Jo Kopenck be doing that?

myLot reputation of 67/100. anniepa (11669)   ranked 329 out of 3,985 in politics  5 years ago

We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one! There was certainly more allegations of election fraud against the Bush camp than the Democrats in 2000 but that's not the topic of discussion here. For the record, I never said nor would I ever say not Republican should speak on these holidays so to say "Any democratic who speaks on Veterns Day or Memorial day should make you sick." is certainly not a fair statement no matter how you may feel about certain individuals. I was very opposed to the Vietnam war but I supported the troops with all my heart; they were my friends, classmates and neighbors and many of them died over there and many more came home to never, ever be the same. You can support the troops without supporting the war and that's still true today. Cheney is a hypocrit, pure and simple, he had other priorities in his life then but he feels no remorse about sending our young men and women to their death now. I feel anyone who is sincere in their words has the right to speak on Veterans Day or Memorial Day, regardless of political affiliation. When my father-in-law served in World War II he didn't even have a political party because he wasn't old enough to vote! My father was a bit older when he volunteered for that war but politics had nothing to do with it.

I totally agree with you annie. The way I look at Cheney being at Arlington is that it's just used as another PR stunt for the WHite House to say "WE care about our troops". I know that may be a little off base, but I think that's all they are concerned with. C'mon, "different priorities"? How many people went to Vietnam and then came home to finish their education? I guess my question is this, for a man that would go on to hold such esteemed public offices what would be a greater priority than fighting in his military? The man is a hypocrit and the total wrong choice to speak at Arlington.
