Why don't they leave the kids alone! They are comparing Sesame Street done in 1969 to todays "politically correct" (malarky, I call it) ideas and now warnings on on Volume 1&2 as "not suitable for todays pre-schooler". Can you believe it? Cookie Monster promotes obesity and diabetes, Oscar's depression was untreated and Elmo was denied Proxack. Allistair Cookie promoted the wrong behavior - Smoking and eating pipes.
Do these adults have nothing better to do with their time that tear history apart? Destroy all our fun childhood memories? Deny kids fun and imagination? First Santa can't say Ho Ho Ho and now Oscar and his friends are bad influences. What is wrong with people today?!?!

What's wrong with people today, is that the Government and organizations have people so worried about being politically correct that they've forgotten what is important. Education.
I actually still watch Sesame Street with my kids, and I hate it now. It borders on insanity. If you haven't seen it lately, you should try to catch an episode and see what I mean. It's ridiculous to the point of not making sense sometimes. And, I don't believe it teaches kids anything anymore.
I say, bring back the old episodes of Sesame Street.

You're right about that! People are not allowing kids to be kids and watch a kid themed show. (although it is okay for them all to have hand held games where you kill to get to the next level) So Oscar the Grouch lived in a trash can, kids didn't care, He was a funny little creature! I'd bet that not one kid ever grew up thinking " I am going to live like Oscar when I grow up". But if we are going to be politically corrrect, you could say at least Oscar had a roof over his head, these days many don't have that! Adults have to discet it in the name of "politically correct" and in my opinion, I think many do to for an excuse to be lackadaisical in their parenting. "good grief, that is not politically incorrect, now I have to teach my kid - this show isn't going to do it for me".
Why can't kids be kids for a few years!

You're right. The only way kids would ever get the notion that Oscar wasn't "living properly" is from their parents. It's sad to see that some parents even put these ideas into their kids heads by not allowing them to watch certain things for reasons that are beyond my comprehension. If parents spent as much time as they do putting unnecessary labels and insinuations on things as they would on properly educating their children in important life lessons, they'd do wonders for their children. Didn't these parents ever see the Brady Bunch?

Totally agree. Instead of teaching them the right way they just tell them not to do it this wrong way, but never bother to tell them what to do next!

Where we lived in the 60's we met parents who would not allow their children to watch Sesame Street because even then some people considered the show politically incorrect. Cripers, we were adults and enjoyed the show and never saw anything harmful in it, or even inappropriate and neither did most of the parents of kids we knew.
It is funny how short sighted and narrow minded some people can be. Maybe it gives them a feeling of power that, having few accomplishments themselves, they think they can raise themselves up by spoiling other people's fun and putting labels on others. But when people tell other people what is suitable for their children, I wonder what they think would be more suitable...putting latex thingees on cucumbers, maybe?

Or just needing an excuse for their kids misbehavior because they didn't bother to teach their kids anything. And you are probably not far off with that last comment - I dread hearing what my now 7 yo GD is gong to hear in "health" class come time for that in school!

Insane - perfect description! I just get tired of people "evaluating" the past with the knowledge and mentality and ways of today. The past is gone, can't change it and I don't see any reason to erase it from history. We wouldn't be who we are today without our past. Good or bad. You can't take the present into the past and make sense of either. They are just destroying our past and memories. But today, Playing computer games where they "kill" something to get to the next level is so much better for our kids!
