Wow I can't believe what I learned from this news article. What do you think? the top 7 are- Granola bars, Tea drinks, Pretzels, muffins, Rice cakes, Fruit-Flavored snacks (gummies), Frozen Yogurt. Its interesting what we don't know about food. I knew some of these were bad for your health and some just shocked me. One of the foods here I enjoy is rice cakes and I thought for sure that they were cood for you considering they made out of rice. Also Granola bars I knew most store brands are loaded with sugar its hard to find the actually healthy ones. All ese fails I guess it would be healthy to make them yourself I guess. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22027686/

This is a very informative discussion. Just a few days ago, I was suggesting to a friend to try and eat granola bars because it will keep you healthy and basing on the ingredients that it's made of, but reading the article, I was wrong and it has a point. I love to cook myself but we don't have the space to cook, we don't have a kitchen to cook. We rent a room without a kitchen and it would be great if I can prepare our food from scratch. I know and feel the difference if you fully rely on the premade/preservative full type of food as oppose to food that can be prepared from scratch or altered with fresh ingredients. Thank you for the information!

no problem. I know how you feel missing a kitchen to cook in. I used to live in a room with a bathroom, and I bought a microwave and that was my stove in the bathroom. It was nice of someone to put a huge cupboard in the bathroom cause that was my food pantry. That was 4 years ago and I hope never to live like that again. I hated it. thankfully at the time I had no kids to take care of. but now I have a kitchen in my appartment I am still learning to cook the basics by scratch. I never done this before. All my years living by myself I always bought microve food and oven food and stove top food to cook. You know the stuff that takes maybe a 1hr or less.

It seems like very rarely are foods healthy anymore and you have to read labels very carefully to figure out what exactly you are eating. I had been eating some really yummy whole wheat bagels for months thinking they were good for me until I read the ingredients one day and saw that high fructose corn syrup was the number two ingredient. Needless to say I don't eat those anymore. I love pretzels and I always thought they were healthy, but I also get reduced sodium ones because the regular ones are just too salty for me. I wish I was a good cook then I would make a lot of my own foods, but really I am the worst cook ever and every time I try a recipe I mess it up somehow.. so I have to stick with what I find at the store. I try to buy mostly fruits and vegetables though.

I know what you mean when it comes to food I think is healthy, I try to remember before buying to read the ingredients and I try to buy food that is low in calories and low in sodium and sugar. I try to feed my son food that don't have any partial hydrogenated anything, and thats hard to do. I found the only cookies I can buy for house is Oreo cookies. thats the only one with out partial hydrogenated oils. Yes it has fructose corn syrup, I don't know much about the ingredient all I know is its high in sugar. When you mention cooking I am still learning to cook. I can most of the time not mess up on recipes. I am working on that still, cause I hate buying pre made food its to expensive.

Healthy foods are getting harder and harder to find. We are getting so used to being able to go to the store and buy a dinner that is just a few minutes away from our table and take little or no work from us. It is even gettinghard to find the foods and supplys you need to create a home cooked meal. Epidemic.

I know what you mean. I don't know much about cooking from scratch I am learning. I do notice though its hard to find certain ingredients I hate that. So I just try to find very simple recipes that have ingredients I can find. I want to eventually make those meals that you see as tv dinners but mine will be from scratch and healther I hope. I want my son to eat better then those. I don't even buy those unhealthy meals.

Hi lizzyt. I have been aware of some of these foods that are actually unhealthy, though generally may be seen healthy by most people. What I have not really been aware of are pretzels and rice cakes. I've always thought of them as healthy. But then I guess, it really is important to read the labels. I'm glad you have posted this for others' awareness. I have read also that most frozen yoghurts do not anymore contain the live and good bacteria because they get killed once they are frozen.

I am glad to help others learn more about health. I know what you mean the rice cakes and the pretzols shocked me too. I have eatten rice cakes for years thinking since their made out of rice they got to be good for you, But I guess I'll just read more food labels before making the judge this is really healthy to eat.
