Do you say thank you when someone holds a door? Do you give the courtesy wave when someone lets you into traffic? I always do. It always annoys me when people don't. I wish I had just let the door go or not let them into traffic.

I do say thank you and do the little wave for trafic. But it's not a huge deal for me if others don't. The only "common courtesy" thing that I get really annoyed about when people dont' do it is blinkers! Oh we could go on for days about that one. Lol

I am always very polite to people who hold the door for me. I am loud and clear with a "Thank you very much" so that not only the person can hear but others as well. A lot of people could stand to learn a few things about courtesy and friendliness. I had a little boy hold a door open for me once and I smiled and said, "Thank you very much, sir." And I always hold doors open for others.
The same with traffic. I always give a wave of thanks. When someone doesn't give me a wave of thanks when I let them by I say 'thank you' to myself for them.

Saying "thank you" is an act of courtesy which shows the refined person within you who knows how to acknowledge others' positive contributions to yourself. But it should come from the heart and not mechanically. Even a robot can be pre-programmed to say "thank you" when you provide it with the desired inputs. But does that really mean that the robot is "thankful" to you? Courtesy is something which should come naturally to a person. It should not be mandatory. If a person forgets to show his/her courtesy, it only shows his/her unrefined nature. But if he/she does show the required courtesies, that itself doesn't show that he/she is a good person.
