Glass top stove driving me nuts! |
Does anyone else have a glass top stove that drives them nuts? I've lived in this house for a year and a half now, and I seriously can't stand my stove top. EVERY time I use it I have to clean it. And I'm not talking about just wiping it clean. It gets black marks on it if there is ANY moisture on the underside of my pots and pans at all. This is a white stove top. Are the black ones any better at hiding the marks? Maybe I'm doing something wrong when I'm cooking. Either way I only have about 3 more weeks to put up with it before we move, but I'm sure eventually I'm going to have to replace the stove in our new place. I don't think they make the burner style anymore, do they? Anyway, does anyone have good tips on cleaning this dumb thing? What do you like/ dislike about glass top stoves?

1. kareng (3620) | 3 years ago | I love mine. I have the black and I normally wipe it off after every use. It does not require a big clean up which is one of the things I love about it. I don't miss cleaning up after spills and boil overs on the old stove at all. This one is easy to maintain and clean. It sounds like the white shows more or gets more markings on it. When you move try to get a black one!

blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | It sounds like the black stove top is much nicer. I definitely wouldn't mind wiping up after each use. That's part of my kitchen cleaning routine anyway. Scrubbing it after each use is getting old, though!
| |
kareng (3620) | 3 years ago | Oh yeah, that would get old really quick. I wouldn't be in the mood for that after working all day and then coming home to get dinner fixed as soon as possible. Easy clean up is a must for me with my schedule.

blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | Fortunately I'm a stay at home mom, so I do have time in my day to get the stove cleaned. It's just frustrating, because I always thought this stove tops were supposed to be easier to take care of.

dumper (153) | 3 years ago | My kids told me to use magic eraser. I do now and it works pretty good. If I have alot of brown i use a razor blade to scrape it off. Another thing thats makes it shine and gets rid of grease is viniger and water.
| |
kareng (3620) | 3 years ago | Thanks for the tip dumper! Vinegar and water works well for cleaning the oven also.
| |
blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | Vinegar seems to be the all-around cleaning product. I think once I get moved I'm going to have to go buy a big jug of vinegar!

| sueinfairbanks (1) | 1 year ago | I love my stove too - I have a black one and it's easy to clean. The only thing I really dislike about it is that I can't seem to get the temperature low enough. When I make spaghetti sauce, it always burns on the bottom, even though it's on it's lowest setting. They don't make "flame tamers" that they make for gas stoves. I live in Fairbanks which doesn't have natural gas and I'm nervous about propane, so when I had to get a new stove/oven I got the glass. Does anyone know of any way to avoid this problem or if there is a product similar to the "flame tamer" meant for glass top stoves?

2. alamode (1891) | 3 years ago | I LOVE mine! Make sure the bottoms of the pots are dry... I have a towel hanging there just for that purpose. Wipe it down when its WARM, not hot, and you'll get most of it. For the worst spots, I either set a wet sponge on it and walk away for an hour, or use a single-edged razor blade to 'encourage' it. It took me some time to get used to mine... now, I won't have anything else!
| |
| |
blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | I always think my pots are dry, but obviously I'm getting water dripped on the stove top somehow. Good idea about the towel! I do wait to long to wipe it down, too. I have to admit that I have a phobia about fire, so I'm always afraid I'm going to catch the rag on fire if I wipe down the stove top too soon. Ok, I realize I am STRANGE! LOL
| |
alamode (1891) | 3 years ago | They are just so different from what we're used to... I for one do NOT miss those nasty burner pans! That was a lot of work! At first I bought the cleaner made for smooth-tops. but it leaves a chalky residue thats not easy to remove, and 'buff' isn't in my vocabulary unless its describing a good lookin' guy!LOL! To make it nice and shiny, I spray it when its completely cool with scrubbing bubbles or window cleaner, then wipe it down. With mine, I know its safe to wipe down when the light by the burner control turns off... but I DO use a big thick sponge!
| |
blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | I never thought about using Scrubbing Bubbles! Are you talking about the ones that are generally thought of for bathroom cleaning with the little bubble guys on the bottle? That is a great idea. I don't like the cleaner for the glass, either, and I know what you mean about buffing. Since I don't have the owner's manual for this stove (it was here when we moved in) I didn't know what I could use, so I've just used the same cleaner that the old owner was using as they left me a bottle when they moved. I love the scrubbing bubble idea and will have to try it today! Thank you.

alamode (1891) | 3 years ago | That's the stuff!! Its my best secret weapon... I even use it on laundry!
| |
blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | How do you use it on laundry? Oh, I love the scrubbing bubbles. I just didn't know they had so many uses!
| |
alamode (1891) | 3 years ago | Mostly the little grease spots that splash on my clothes when I fry something... and I only let it soak in for a minute, then wash it right away. I used it to clean my ceilings when I could still climb a ladder... spray and wipe, so it was easy to get the nicotine off back when we smoked in the house. I'll remember more things I use it for... right now, my brain feels like its gone numb!LOL! Night-night!
| |
blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | I'll have to try the scrubbing bubbles for the grease. I never thought about that. We don't smoke in the house, fortunately, but I'll have to remember that in case I know anyone who does!

3. Goodie123 (7548) | 3 years ago | I know a few people with the black glass top stoves. they love them. But from what I hear from them, the repair costs can be expensive. But with everything these days anything worth having cost heaps for repairs. One neighbour made a padded cover for hers, so when it is not in use she covers it to protect the glass.
| |
| |
blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | I padded cover sounds cute. I would never be able to use one, though, because I would be afraid someone would forget to take off the cover and turn on the cooktop. I am strangely paranoid about fire. I have never been through one, so I don't know where that came from.
| |
Goodie123 (7548) | 3 years ago | I think everyone is afraid of fire. I know I am. Talking about not removing things, I had an electric stove with round elements and bought nice metal covers for them. Umm well the paint on the nice covers burns off when you do not remove them before turning on the stove.

blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | Ooops, oh goodness. That's exactly why I won't put anything on my stove top that could possibly get damaged. I KNOW that I would eventually do that! I could have killed my husband last week. We have been together for 9 years now. Neither one of us has EVER left something in the oven, so why would I bother to check before I turned it on? So, I turned my oven on to pre-heat and started smelling something funny. When I opened it, it turned out he had left a broiling pan in the oven for some unknown reason. Oh, I remember, he was rushing to take the kids to a school function after dinner the night before, and he was going to let the pan cool before putting it in the sink while he took the kids to school. Argh, scared the day lights out of me. I didn't get on him for the pan not being washed, just leaving things in the oven. I've heard about people who are trying to tidy up because there is company on the way so they stick magazines or papers in the oven. That is terrifying!

4. arkaf61 (5729) | 3 years ago | Mine is black and I never really have problems with it. I do wipe it off after each use but I don't get any special marks or anything. MY mother in law's is white as well and so far - she's had it for 4 years, she didn't have any special problems either. I have heard, however, a few complaints from a friend that has a white as well. Maybe white is more prone to scratches, I'm not sure.

blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | It could just be something wrong with the user, me, too! LOL

5. ElicBxn (16184) | 3 years ago | They make the burner style. I was at Sears about a month ago getting a new filter for my fridge & saw them - kind of in passing.
Its just the glass tops are considered an upgrade.
I'd like to get one of those that stay cool unless you put a pot on it.
I think I'd like a glass top because of the cats, on the other hand I'd be afraid, because of them too.
Sealed stove top as conpared to burned kitty paws, some choice....
| |
| |
blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | That's good to know that they still make the burner style. I swear, I was really meant to be born about 50 years before I was. I am so old-fashioned in some ways! LOL
I haven't seen the ones that stay cool unless you put a pot on it. I do think I've heard about them, though. That is a REALLY good idea!
Oh, definitely keep that kitty safe! I haven't been unfortunate enough to put my hand down on one of the hot burners yet, but I keep fearing I will. I do like the light that says the burners are hot.

8. suspenseful (17206) | 3 years ago | I have a black stove top and they are better at hiding the marks, but you do have to clean them every day. I use a cream specially made for them. You can get it in the grocery stores like Safeways now, but before you could get them at the place you bought your stove or the department stores. I find if you have burnt marks or have not cleaned the top for a while, baking soda and a damp towel works quite well and you have to use a plastic scraper to get off the burnt stuff.
| |
| |
blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | I do use the cream cleaner made for the stove tops. When we first moved in I used it every day. Then I gave up because this problem kept happening. I wonder if maybe the top was just so scratched up by the time we moved in that I never had a chance!

blueunicorn (1272) | 3 years ago | It's good to know that I'm not the only one who thinks that it heats slowly! I remember the first time I went to cook spagetti on this stove top. I thought it was broken because it took so long for the water to boil! LOL

10. kimberlyjt (939) | 3 years ago | I wish we had a glass top. Trade ya? hhaaha We have a burner top. I hate cleaning it, so I dont, the husband does. I hate pulling the burners off, I am afraid they will break or something will go wrong. When ever something gets droped down in to the pan, it burns and it has caught fire(mini like a little leaf going up). Glass tops seem nice, just wipe away the mess. With the burners you have take it apart and scrub really hard to get it clean. Such a time consumer.
