Big dogs or little dogs, which do you prefer? |
|
I have two big dogs and one little dog. I've always said that I hate little dogs until my husband moved here with his little dogs. I took some time for the big dogs to get used to the little ones biting them and not being allowed to bite back but, now they get along just fine. One of the little dogs died of old age last year and the other one is on her last leg. My husband says that when she goes, we are getting another big dog because he prefers my big dogs.
Which do you prefer?

1. Galena (4150) | 2 years ago | I prefer large dogs as they are gentler, calmer and more docile. small breeds tend to be from terrier stock.
also, large dogs are better to cuddle as you can really get your arms around them and give them a big squeeze.
we have a lurcher and a deerhound, and I grew up with a German Shepherd and a Great Dane.

girlgonefishing (1224) | 2 years ago | You are so right about that Galena. I've never heard of a lurcher. I'm going to have to look it up.
| |
|
|
Galena (4150) | 2 years ago | a lurcher is a cross bred dog where one or more of the parents is a sighthound, like a greyhound, deerhound, saluki etc.
our Lurcher is half greyhound half collie.

|
girlgonefishing (1224) | 2 years ago | I looked it up and got tons of pictures. They are so sweet looking! Here is the information I got: The Lurcher is not considered a purebred dog. Normally, one of the parents is a member of the Greyhound family. It is assumed that this type of dog was developed because in the past, in England only noble blood was allowed to own a Greyhound or any other sighthound. This cross produced a sound hunting companion for the commoners. The Lurcher is generally an obedient dog making it an excellent coursing hound, hunter and companion.

2. lightningd (738) | 2 years ago | Well, I have one big dog, and three medium dogs. (Well, technically, I have two medium dogs and my son's brittany spaniel lives here until he's done with college, so I count him too.)
I like all of them for various reasons, but I would say, as for my companion and traveling partner, I like my medium dogs. My two are Australian Cattle Dogs, and the big dog is half Boxer half Border Collie.
I grew up with a big dog and a little dog. A Gordon Setter and a Shih Tzu... what a combination. While Joe (Gordon Setter) was the docile lover, lick intruders to death, Auggie (Shih Tzu) was the killer attack dog with a height complex. Auggie seriously thought he was the size of a St. Bernard with the bite of a Doberman. That has given me an idea for another discussion.
Anyway, my preference,,,, somewhere in the middle.

girlgonefishing (1224) | 2 years ago | Good points. I've always wanted an Australian Cattle Dog. They are so pretty and well behaved.

lightningd (738) | 2 years ago | I do love my Heelers. I have one red and one blue. The are one of the most loyal dogs I have ever owned. And oh so smart. My younger one, Skeeter, is going to be a year old next month, and he's probably one of the best I've ever had. He's my constant companion, and he considers himself my protector. Grady, my red, is getting up there in years, having already lived past the normal age expectancy of 10-12 years, and will be 16 this summer. He's my pal, but he's going blind, and has trouble getting around much now. I'll be broken hearted when he goes, as I've had him as part of my life for so long. He's been my helper with the horses, and my road companion when I ride. He used to take the lead rope for the horses and lead them back to the barn, but he just can't do it anymore. Now, he's just pretty much spending his time relaxing, and keeping the other dogs in line around here. He may be old and going blind, but he's still the boss.

3. drannhh (7603) | 2 years ago | I prefer big dogs but hubby prefers little dogs. However, we actually have a life style that does not work well with any dogs, or cats either. I am more of a cat person, but grew up with all sorts of animals, a wonderful dog, many cats, even goats, ducks, and rabbits. The only farm animals I don't like are chickens, but we love to eat them and their yummy eggs, too.

drannhh (7603) | 2 years ago | Oh, that is a lovely green egg. Our chickens were bantams and the eggs were mostly cream colored but they were itty bitty little eggs.

| 5. madserene (26) | 2 years ago | I love medium/big dogs. I have a medium sized dog and she's lovely. Big dogs are so nice to hug and I know I won't step on them accidently cos they are easy to spot. And they look more dominant than the smaller dogs, makes me feel a little more protected.

6. jillbeth (2224) | 2 years ago | I love all sizes of dogs! I have three, two are in the 35 pound range and one weighs 20 pounds. My friend Jannette has five dogs in her house, and three of them are huge! One is a lab puppy, so he's getting there, and one is a chubby little beagle. She has a Great Dane who is enormous and likes to sit on my lap! The darn thing outweighs me and I can't breathe when he sits on me, but he's such a sweetheart!

9. ericajoyce (1641) | 2 years ago | Hello girlgonefishing. I prefer little dogs because they are cute, cuddly and easy to handle. My sister once owned a big dog. I was terrified of it for it might bite me or pounce on me. Little dogs are usually easy to handle and you can bring them anywhere. You can even put them in bags for small dogs.

girlgonefishing (1224) | 2 years ago | Well, you are right about the bags. I just got a vision of me trying to carry my 100 pound dog around in a bag!

10. ersmommy1 (10496) | 2 years ago | Twice in my life I have been bitten by little dogs. Not a pleasant experience. My preference is for larger dogs. My Sophie is 42 pounds. She would be listed in the medium sized catagory. I think that larger dog provides a sense of security. Besides I like a dog you can wrap your arms around. A big hug makes the day nice.
